Derill Pounds is an emcee/dj from the home of Oshkosh B'Gosh and has been a steady growing staple in the Midwest music scene since 1995, helping create a spot on the map for Oshkosh hip hop. Derill brings that sense and style of original gritty boom bap with an alternative twist, topped with unique raw lyricism and life perspectives, while still adding a touch of humor and fun back into a genre lost in commercialism and over saturation. Proving to be an original musician with a love for music that goes way beyond the mic booth.

  Local lad done well for himself. Breezy, effortlessly comfortable hip-hop straight outta Oshkoshand clinging closer to the post-License to Ill stylings of the Beastie Boys than any variety of profane gangsta schlock.
  
  The rhymes are slick, the beats break nice ‘n’ smooth and the production of the whole is an above-competent meshing of funk, jazz and laid back pop/rock elements. One could fitfully discover this record pumping out of speakers at any number of clubs, hipster bars or drunken summertime block parties, a plethora of writhing bodies in close proximity.
  
  Seventeen tracks on display here – plenty o’ scratching, sampling and lyrical hustling to turn thy ear out and force you into a groove of delirious proportions. This record is bound to make strides in favor of solidifying a credible hip hop movement in this here musically malnourished Fox Valley (maybe the cheeky street styles on fellow ‘Kosh rapper Baby Cash’s amusing, low rent Weed N’ Surp can be thrown in for added carnival effect), it’s far too earnest in its pursuit of a well earned good time to go unnoticed.

  Derill Pounds’ latest, Emotional Rollercoaster Rescue (Anti-Famous Entertainment), is a quirky and engaging effort of lo-fi indie hip-hop. The Wisconsin native counts Coolzey and Kosha Dillz amongst his friends and cohorts, and both show up as guests on the album. “MT1” has a nice beat that would feel right at home on an old Brand Nubian record, and this isn’t the only time on the record that early ’90s hip-hop is recalled. The Midwest indie movement seems to be going strong.

  Currently touring with the likes of Yak Ballz and Kosha Dillz, Wisconsin-born Derill Pounds is in a pretty good place. After an extensive discography, and working alongside various DJ’s and bands, Derill Pounds is now ready to single-handedly pursue his life-long ambition, and to do it in style. “Emotional Rollercoaster Rescue” is exactly what the title suggests, as Derill Pounds certainly has the talent and ambition to take it to the “next step”, but providing a great business plan, along with marketing and promotion strategies will assist his success. The master test is whether Derill Pounds can get his music heard to the masses.
  
  The track listing itself causes thought upon the listener. We all know how important it is, and hours can be spent deciding crucial aspects of which song order an artist should present their music. It’s fair to say that no one single is stereotypical or perpetuating Hip-Hop in the slightest, and offers a world of opportunity in terms of lyrical content, and the approach that Derill Pounds intends to take. Guest appearances are few, but selective, and the likes of Coolzey, Benzito, Kosha Dillz and Roebus One all feature on their respective tracks. It could be interesting to hear what they have to offer.
  
  The music has plenty to offer, especially for the new listener who is perhaps looking for a little more than looped-beats and mediocre lyrics. Sonically produced to a futuristic, yet underground style, Derill Pounds really stands out as unique, when it comes to the overall sound of his music. Trying to pigeonhole him is impossible, when quite clearly the likes of the opening track “Ode School” just highlight this point to a tee. “Baby Deader” is just one of many random, yet highly addictive additions that will refuse to be ignored, amongst an already odd track listing.
  
  The true element of music is used throughout the project, with the likes of drums, keyboard effects and samples being to DP’s disposal. Such a privilege can sometimes be abused; however “Emotional Rollercoaster Rescue” is a collection of great noise. Contradictory to my thoughts, the style is for the acquired taste (cue MF DOOM), but can appeal to a mass audience who just want to feel emotion through music. That’s the brilliance, and very difficult feat that Derill Pound’s has managed to achieve.
  
  With plenty in the pipeline for Derill Pounds, “Emotional Rollercoaster Rescue” will prove to be a great stepping stone for an artist that has been established approaching two decades. With an extensive discography to his name already, DP will strive to continue his love for music, in different ways to the norm which will ultimately be his advantage to his competitors. Catch Derill Pounds at various events with Yak Ballz and Kosha Dillz, or at least take ten minutes out to decipher one of his many interesting, and colourful tracks that are available to fans via many methods.

  Next to a tiny stage crammed into the corner of the smoke-filled Reptile Palace with walls covered by graffiti, flyers and grime, Derill Pounds is standing by for his call to begin. The emcee is dressed like any random twenty-something in jeans, a black hoodie and matching ball cap. He receives his call, and like a bat out of hell, Pounds cuts through the diverse and rowdy crowd like a punk charging his way through a circle pit. Simultaneously the beat starts bumping, and the crowd diverts their attention from the bar towards the stage that Pounds leaps on to continue his quest of bringing hip-hop to Oshkosh.
  To fulfill this dream and to make music his life’s work, Pounds, armed with determination and an unbridled passion is bringing the culture he loves to the city better known for Country USA and overalls than hip-hop.
  "Everyone’s got their dream, and ever since I was a kid mine was music," Pounds said.
  The 25-year-old Pounds, whose real name is Derek Mulloy, was born and raised in Oshkosh. He attended Oshkosh North High School where he was introduced to the culture that would eventually lead him to bypass college to become the face of hip-hop in his hometown.
  Music had always been around Pounds. His father plays the harp and his collection of blues and classic rock albums were in heavy rotation during Pounds’ youth. As he grew into his own, he started skateboarding and through his shredding buddies was introduced to punk rock, and more importantly, hip-hop.
  "It [hip-hop] was this whole different way of living that I wanted to be a part of," Pounds said. "A lot of it was based out of the ghetto and it really hit me that there’s so much more out there."
  With early mainstream influences ranging from A Tribe Called Quest to Wu-Tang Clan, Pounds started spinning records at home and writing rhymes in 1996. A year later, things changed after Pounds discovered the art form he would immerse himself in, underground hip-hop.
  The year was 1997 and Pounds attended a concert of hip-hop veterans Hieroglyphics in Madison where he was introduced to the music of Rhymesayers, the Midwest underground hip-hop kingpins. He said he was blown away by their unique style of hip-hop that came from his side of the tracks and immediately started buying their records.
  From that point, it was out with mainstream, that Pounds now considers garbage full of entertainers looking to get rich, and in with underground hip-hop.
  He briefly moved to Milwaukee in 1999 where he was the DJ for a metal band. The band knew of Pounds’ love for hip-hop, and during one concert the drummer kicked a beat and flagged him to the stage.
  And to his surprise, the metalheads enjoyed his brief performance that wound up being the beginning of Derill Pounds, the emcee.
  Tired of the DJ scene, Pounds moved back to Oshkosh a year later and teamed up with friend, Bufus Wood. Together the pair started the group Applebomb Fruitflys, with Wood creating the beats and Pounds on the mic.
  "That’s when it really started rolling because I had someone making the beats," Pounds said.
  He said the hip-hop scene was nearly non-existent in Oshkosh, but he believed that with Wood, they could make something from nothing. The duo started recording and performing around town, but were met with adversity along the way. Small town Wisconsin is a far stretch from the streets of NYC and some people, especially bar and club owners, weren’t too accepting of this new urban culture that was embedding itself in their community.
  "A lot of people have the perception of hip-hop that it’s going to bring trouble," Pounds said. "One bar owner said he loved a demo I made but couldn’t book them because of the fear that something bad was going to happen."
  He said in a city where cover bands rule the live music scene, it was a struggle to get people to take the risk and try something new. But with relentless promotion and practice Pounds was able to generate his own hip-hop community.
  One place that took this risk was the Reptile Palace, which Pounds now considers to be his home turf. Established in 2004, the Reptile Palace welcomed the fresh-faced Pounds to open mic night and now books him on a consistent basis along with the talent he brings in. When other venues were pushing away hip-hop acts, the mainly metal and punk bar gave him a chance and has since become the biggest spot in Oshkosh for hip-hop.
  Reptile Palace bartender, "Congo," has been working there since it’s conception and has seen Pounds rise from a kid coming in to rap for a sparse crowd into the man who packs the bar whenever he comes.
  "He [Pounds] was the originator. I would say he pretty much is the hip-hop scene in Oshkosh," Congo said. "He’s the gateway for other acts to come in and perform, and the scene wouldn’t be what it is without him."
  This new acceptance and demand for hip-hop has recently led Pounds to add networking to his agenda. He has been bringing in new talent from around the Midwest as well as some from the coast, including New York’s, Kosha Dillz and Sadat-X formerly of Brand Nubian. With this new talent bringing in positive reactions, Pounds said more are sure to follow.
  "It excites me to see others come through," he said. "It keeps the crowd interested and instead of the same four guys every night there are new options, and people dig that."
  UW-Oshkosh senior Adam Severance, 23, said that Pounds is the key to the small but growing hip-hop community in Oshkosh. He said that through his constant promotion of hip-hop shows and the diverse acts that he brings that the scene is only going to get bigger.
  "Every rap show I hear about, Derill Pounds is there," Severance said. "I like that he’s bringing in talent that shows a different side of hip-hop instead of all the gang-banging, gun-toting and weed-smoking fools you hear on the radio."
  Eight years later, the scene that Pounds started has slowly but surely grown. With a small clique of other local emcees that have sprung up including Active Ingredients and Appleton’s Lodoublet, teamed with the outsider talent being brought in, hip-hop has grown a face in Oshkosh. And while Applebomb Fruitflys has long disbanded, Pounds and Bufus Wood are still making music together along with Pounds live show DJ, JB Ill.
  When not performing, Pounds is busy writing and recording in his home studio. He has four independently produced albums under his belt and has been busy in the lab penning his fifth that he hopes to release in May. He has no dreams of grandeur and humbly wants to just keep doing what he’s always been doing; having fun making the music he loves and trying to spread the culture and his message of hip-hop to as many as will listen.
  And on this warm Saturday night in April, Pounds’ goals continue to come to fruition. He gave it his all and the crowd was left wanting more. Exhausted and short of breath, Pounds takes a step off the stage and takes it all in as the next emcee gets ready to take his position on stage.
  "People are finally realizing that we’re on the come-up," Pounds said. "They’re realizing that we’re talented kids with cool things to say."
