Biography

Jonny Debt based in the Golden Horseshoe region of Ontario, Canada deliver charismatic performances and catchy alternative rock songs with provocative lyrics that capture the definitive essence and the innate desires of their fan base. Their unique pseudo-psychedelic approach to video production and the messages in their material, create an instantaneous appeal that is driven by universal themes and the magnetic personality of the band. The "Jonny Debt" band are road warriors and prolific song writers who thrive on the energy of live shows and the in-your-face interaction with their listeners.

The underground and viral popularity of the "God Song" and "Apple Tree" from their previous releases have inspired the band to forge ahead on their mission to write and release as many quality albums as possible and to perform in as many cities and towns across Canada, before expanding into the US market.

It all started with Jonny Debt performing at parties and in basements in Southern Ontario that evolved into playing at clubs and sending their music to a few college radio stations, sharing CD's with fans and friends and various venues. The band was enamoured with the fact that they eventually began to hear their music being played in random cars with their windows down driving down the streets of their home town, on college radio stations and in various bars and clubs in their region. Jonny Debt says "When you are genuine, authentic and honest and immerse yourself in a creative state you cant help but speak from the subconscious". The band believes their songs are the quintessential playlist for a summer road trip and naturally pen music that is fun, that people sing along to at parties. Jonny Debt can't help but to, unabashedly reflect on their own lives and create a unique style of music that could be referred to as "a rare new sound".

Their 2013 album release titled "Prince of The Golden Horseshoe" has received critical acclaim from Canadian music industry insiders. The first single from the record is called "Bronze", which is being promoted to commercial rock radio and the college and university radio markets nationally by an established and professional team. "Jonny Debt" is touring nationally, with dozens of shows confirming, to support the release and in the words of the band themselves, "We will play as many shows as possible this year". Other notable songs from the new album "Canadian Boy" and "Splash In The Sun" are poised to be strong follow-up singles to the initial radio promotion of "Bronze".

2013 will also see "Jonny Debt" showcasing at select music industry events that may include: SXSW and the national COCA conference which will expand the recognition of their music and brand and add to their legion of fans across Canada.

Johnny Debt is a singer-songwriter from Ontario, Canada and this is Bronze, the first single to be dropped from new album Prince Of The Golden Horseshoe. Johnny Debt with the help from some friends perform music with as much energy as they can muster and only stop recording it when they all feel enough of it as been bottled up. I think this is a very good way to record music, as it allows the personality to spice up the music a little.
  
  Bronze is a very simple track, with the basic formula of vocals + guitar + drums, but with the energy from Johnny Debt and co it becomes a very interesting listen. The lyrics are very eccentric yet seem to fit in with the chaotic scenes in the Bronze music video.
  
  The track also features a very catchy guitar riff which never becomes boring, and the same can be said for the chorus too. It’s just a fun track, and every now and then that’s all we need in life. A bit of fun makes everyone happy, and this is something Bronze does very well

Vintage, grimy, a bit crusty around the edges, it’s taken from autobiographical debut album ‘Prince of the Golden Horseshoe’.
  
  Johnny Debt says of the recordings: “I had become so tired of the microscopic dehumanizing practices of most recording experiences, and forsaking being precious about every detail let my sub-conscious spit out the true building blocks on my life. The stories presented on the album are truly of reflection of what is on my mind.”

  Another inbox gem. One of the more diverse projects I’ve heard in months is Canadian upcomer Jonny D...Another inbox gem. One of the more diverse projects I’ve heard in months is Canadian upcomer Jonny Debt’s fantastic 11-track album, combining folk, country, hard alternative and punk into a surprisingly cohesive mix.
  
  The guitars are insanely funky from start to finish, helped by their almost freeform nature in many tracks, the crowning glory of an instrumentation set that also includes some great variety in the percussion. Jonny’s vocals have to be versatile to keep up with the superb backdrops, and they don’t disappoint, with funny, lighthearted deliveries alongside more sombre, thoughtful performances, facets that extend to the ever-catchy songwriting too (tracks 6 and 7 couldn’t represent this dichotomy any better). That diversity will probably mean several will really love some tracks and hate others, but those of a more varied taste will enjoy this regardless. I skip over emailed albums like this on a daily basis, but I’m genuinely glad I gave this one a go. Do so yourself below.

  You’re an instrument, what are you and who’s playing you?
  I’m an ebony and brass run down juke box radio at hobo’s ice cream store Bedside of a small southern beach town in florida off the gulf of Mexico. There’s duct tape over the coin hole and a small red sign that says “Free Play”
  
  Which song is stuck in your head right now?
  Songs don’t get stuck in my head, I’m very visual and spend most of my time concentrating on my senses and surroundings.
  
  What makes you mad, what calms you down?
  If you touch my ears I fall asleep

  Woman’s voice.

  Your best live memory?
  My band got stuck and couldn’t make it to a gig one night, I followed two amazing 5 piece bands completely solo at the house of blues in San Diego. I remember thinking if you can’t do it alone you can’t do it . I don’t know if it was a fluke but people danced, laughed and sang along, it was the first time in my life I felt like a real songwriter, musician and entertainer, opposed to a guy who plays music.
  
  The best advice you could give anyone?
  Be kind, passionate live in the moment! When you’re thinking about the past or future you’re skipping over your life and that seems like such a waste to me.

  While I hadn’t heard of Jonny Debt until a year ago, the singer and songwriter has been travelling North America and making music for the last four years. The Hamilton born Debt has more recently making more of a home in the Hammer – albeit reports are it’s in a remodeled van parked near Hess Village — and with his newest collection of songs dubbed “Prince of the Golden Horseshoe”, is sure to make more of a splash locally.
  
  “I like to travel the land,” smiles Debt on his previous nomadic spirit. “I didn't move far — just Florida, California, Austin; all the places a little guy wants to be. I finished my high school in a small gulf town called Carrabelle, Florida. Life was sweet then, consisting of country girls, beach parties and small town, freshly caught cooking. But I've learned that Hamilton is the baddest ass city in North America, and Jonny debt will not stop until everybody knows it, and Hamilton is recognized and acknowledged for our values, art and culture cause it doesn't get better then Hamilton.
  
  “It's safe to say that as long as I can remember I have woke up and thought about traveling with a band,” he adds. “The name came from an idea that I could leave this world better off than if I was never born, it’s my debt to this world for giving me so much. When I was little, I had a dream that I made a machine that created more energy then it took to run. People have been telling me my whole life that's it’s impossible but if I could leave this world better off than if I was never born then I could prove that more positive than negative is very possible if you let your heart go there. People think I'm joking but I want to go on the road for 20 years — I'm so passionate and obsessed with the idea of traveling the earth playing music until I’m dead.”
  
  Enlisting Sid Lundaigh (drums) and Adam Neumann (bass), the latest version of the Jonny Debt band shows enough promise musically that they might achieve Debt’s dreams. The latest disc produced by Steve Bigas at Porcelain Records has enough hooks to make you want to sing along.
  
  “I want my music to be earthy, passionate, fun, beautiful, sad, and happy with a lot of sex in my violence but most of all alive,” offers Debt. “I want it to have that hot amp sound when you’re playing a live venue. I want people to know when they listen to Jonny Debt they can trust that it’s real poetry, experiences, and that I gave it everything I can and nothing less, that when they play my album there going to feel real emotion and vibration — the ones I can sing with an acoustic at a party or camping trip. “Prince of the Golden Horseshoe” is a statement about my way of life and not because I planned it but this is who we are and you can’t make anything worthwhile if it isn’t honest. Were all broken pieces in the Jonny Debt band. When we come together we get to be something that everybody wants, we get to be something sacred.”
  
  With his new release reportedly getting airplay across Canada as well in the US and even Italy, Debt’s nomadic spirit will seemingly come in handy to get the music played live in front of more fans.
  
  “I want to play festivals, I want to live on the road and when I roll back into Hamilton for the final show on every single tour to see the faces of the people that love and support us I want to know that we haven't let them down,” says Debt.
  
  “It’s all going to be special to me but a CD release is more than a show,” adds Debt. “Its celebrating a chapter of time like a birthday for your art, everything is still fresh. We play every show like it’s our last because the way we drink, it honestly might be. We’re always professional but we have fun. Once you get their attention, they’re going to like you or they’re not so there is no point worrying about it. The Lazy Flamingo is the best party in Hamilton, I would come early, it’s going to be packed.”

New album 'Prince Of The Golden Horseshoe' is out now and free track 'Bronze' does contain some punky elements but it's too refined and melodic to fit that title. We'll go for powerpop/rock 'n' roll instead, that sums this beauty up quite well.
