Biography
Yovan “VonYovi Yovanni” Dukes is a multi-talented rapper, singer, songwriter, producer who was born in Albany, Georgia. Since adolescence, he has resided in both Atlanta, Georgia and West Palm Beach, Florida. His interest in music began during grade school when he joined the school band at the age of ten and selected the drums as his first instrument and later switched to playing the tuba. VonYovi never looked at himself as a rapper, singer or songwriter, but instead had dreams of becoming a world class music producer. Although he did not view himself as a rapper in his formative years, VonYovi and his friends enjoyed freestyling from time to time. His fascination with the art form eventually fueled his desire to become good at it. As he got older he continued to practice music at Palm Beach Lakes High School. By the time VonYovi graduated, he had become a seasoned marching band member and subsequently set his sights on one of the baddest marching bands in the land, the incomparable Marching 100 of Florida A&M University. As an esteemed Florida A&M Rattler, he elected to play the most visible, if not the loudest instrument on the field, a sousaphone. His attraction to the sousaphone or tuba was a direct reflection of VonYovi Yovanni, an artist and individual who commands your attention even before the first sound is produced.
With encouragement from his father, VonYovi began producing beats in 2007 while attending FAMU. He had an opportunity to sell his beats to aspiring rappers and singers but approached the task halfheartedly and produced lackluster beats that were never presented to anyone. By the time the year 2011 rolled around, VonYovi was feeling the pressures of a few unwise decisions and had grown tired of the mental and financial effort it required to continue at Florida A&M University. So, he decided to take a year or two off to seriously pursue his dreams of becoming a successful music producer. VonYovi Yovanni returned to Georgia in April 2011to officially join Old Head Records as a producer. Upon his arrival, he worked with talented local artists Tomeeko “Yokane” Piercy, Jade “Showtime” Jackson and established producer Alonzo “Yung Zo” Jordon from the platinum production team of Twinn Productions who introduced mult-platinum producer Shawty Redd to the music industry.
VonYovi failed to receive the welcome from label mates that he anticipated and was forced become a standalone artist on the label. Under the tutelage of the label owner, VonYovi went from infancy to platinum status in just a few short months, proving to be a musical prodigy. His trademark style of beat making and songwriting is marked by a genuine appreciation for all great music, a complex blend of southern street savvy and a highly refined level of musicianship, which has allowed him to create “The New Sound of the South TM.” With his self-titled debut album, “VonYovi” set to hit the streets in March 2012, he released his first single “Georgia, Florida” in late October 2011, just in time to fuel a long-term sports rivalry and add to the excitement of the much anticipated football game between the Georgia Bulldogs and Florida Gators. The song also pays homage to the two states VonYovi affectionately call home. Follow up releases from his debut album includes the bass pounding, attention grabbing track “So Throwed” featuring Todrick “Arab Shawty” Corbin and Benjamin “Bemo” Sands of TNT Entertainment and the neo soul ballad for the ladies “Send for Me” featuring the sultry vocals of Cedric “Snoop” Lyons. Finally, VonYovi generates a lot of excitement during performances when he tells all the sexy ladies to get to the dance floor and “Show Me What You Working With.” This is only a sampling of the 17 track self-titled debut album scheduled to be released early Spring 2012.
