Not too often is North Carolina put on the map these days…yet the smooth, jazzy and soulful sounds of the Queen City (Charlotte)’s own Trish Andrews was a welcome fragrance. She uses R&B, smooth jazz, soul and hip hop beats to describe love with her voice. The sounds linger as you fall into a comfort zone with this artist.
I love it when artists share their love with the audience, especially when it’s through the story of “sharing, loving and just being while managing a career” and a love. If you’re looking for the perfect song to daydream to while driving, Back To You is it.
Can’t Keep Running and Jumpin and Bumpin provide the smooth soundtracks for a night on the town, while You Know What You Do To Me (and the Remix) adds fire to an already jumping night. Andrews lyrical skills are showcased on Jumpin and Bumpin with a very soulful sax mirroring her vocals.
If you find yourself in the mood for slow dancing, Feels Like Heaven will help your two-step. Not only will you feel heaven while dancing to this smooth track, but Andrews angelic voice ushers you into your own vision of love and heaven.
Perhaps my favorite track is Already. It exudes sensuality and the piano-laced rhythms entice you as much as the rich, sultry voice of Andrews.
Attraction. Temptation. Addiction. Fixation. Relation. These are the five words that come to mind when listening to one of my favorite cuts, These Five Words. Andrews melodious voice envelopes the room, with the smooth silkiness of a nice red, Bordeaux-wine. Appropriately, after enjoying this cd, you will become attracted, tempted, addicted, fixated and last, relate to Andrew vocals and lyrical skills. Support this artist, you will not be disappointed.

Joerg is a rock solid supporter of this site, and puts me in touch with all sorts of great performers, so many thanks comrade. Huge amount of respect for you my friend. Joerg was also on the case with this Trish Andrews set. Trish got in touch here and talked to me about her new album. I actually have to credit Ralph Tee at Expansion for this one, as it was on his show a couple of weeks ago, he introduced my old ears to this great new singer. Ralph said he thought this was probably the first real quality release of 2009 thus far. Although there is much great music around right now, I can understand where he is coming from regarding Trisha's fine new release. The two tracks that will be the killer songs for many U.K. radio folks are the opener 'Comfort Zone' and the moody 'Can't Keep Running'. The overall standard throughout is pretty rock solid on this album. Trisha has a smooth vocal styling, which will please many radio jocks, and is a very pleasant woman to correspond with. I asked Trisha about her own influences as well. She told me, 'Kirk Whalum's take on Stevie Wonder's 'All I Do' but it's heavily Jazzed up. Rahiem DeVaughn, Ledisi, Jill Scott, Eric Benet, KEM, Brian McNight, Walter Beasley, Kim Waters, Brian Culberston, Maxwell, GUY, Gap Band, Parlament, Earthwind & Fire, Marvin Gaye, Raphel Saadiq, Cameo, SOS Band, Trish Andrews, :-)' Herself? I am outraged! LOL Anyone who likes Ledisi is alright by myself! She has some fine music in her collection, which accounts for this must have release in 2009. Even sending me a signed copy of her album, bless her. Very nice album, Trisha. Hugely recommended set. Check her website here: http://www.trishandrews.com

Attraction, Temptation, Addiction, Fixation, Relation – These Five Words Came To My Mind When I Think About Your Music, Trish! Attraction, Temptation, Addiction, Fixation, Relationships - These Five Words Came To My Mind When I Think About Your Music, Trish! In modification of the revelations about her emotional life, which Trish Andrews in the title song of their first album in store, it allowed me the wonderful effects of their music into these words. In quite a natural way the lady adds together what belongs together - new soul, enriched by the awareness of jazz and even a passable ration Hip-Hop. In the execution with the claim by the Neo-Soul guidelines to be met, however result in a blend of tradition committed always accessing melody lines and palpable pulsating arrangements.
Ms. Andrews has the gift of succinct hooks to leave, under which the producer and arranger Rodney Shelton clearly structured music publishers can. Guitarist, bassist, drummer and an ever-present background Sängerchaft ensure the invigorating elements, while Shelton the electronics department in check and keeps a subtly-transparent sound tissue preference. Trish world is filled with emotions, temptations, temptations and honest information on the Heat - Slow and Midtempos are their domain. Here she spreads her expansive melody of arms, here provide generously distributed harmonies and the interrelationship of everlasting power, which is full of subtleties of the arrangement for repeatedly surprising feel-good moments.
Needless to say Trish can also attract the pace - then hop drums and bass, while also in this context the woman is not the essence of the meaning is: The groove must roll, the hooks must draw, the show has buzz. Extremely solid Soul Art - always so attractive and alluring that a Suchpotential is not excluded - but a solid relationship with Trish Andrews and the strength of its five words can simply not be sin.

Well, we have 10 more months to sift through yet BUT you have to admit that this is a set of immense value and is certainly the strongest CD on the market at the moment by a long chalk. The quality of Trish Andrews' debut set is one of the highest calibre. Trish is a fine, fine singer and has written all of these songs herself, and along with the familiar Rodney Shelton has dished up soul food to serve up on any occasion. The album does not go above midtempo level, which suits me, and manages not to fall into a well-trodden, monotonous path as a result. This is the sort of quality we would have bought in the late 80s or earl-mid 1990s, so to have it here today in 2009 is heartwarming. The album first came to my attention thanks to Ralph's Sunday afternoon show on Jazz FM, and my old ears pricked up straight away. The strengths of this CD is legion. The only down side is the inclusion of a few rap asides which are a deviation from what the CD is about. What is definitely in my "Comfort Zone" is the first track of the same name!
This is quality independent soul that meets the quality of the majors head on. A silky mid tempo offering complete with real instrumentation and fine backing singers, this is a real must. "On My Mind" is heavily piano-led with great wah-wah in the mix, reminding me of the classy material from Margi Coleman's classy 1995 CD. The tittle track owes more to early 80s soul than Y2K, albeit a little more stripped down, and the Rhodes-filled "You Know What You Do To Me" bounces along with a skip and clap beat, gorgeous keyboard and a definite summer vibe. I have to say that one of my standout cuts is the ethereal and sunny "Can't Keep Running". The live drums, guitar and synth are a perfect backdrop to Trish's beautifully rich, quavering vocals. Quality soul and then some! "Feels Like Heaven" reminds me a little of Marion Meadows' "Miss Know It All", and the seductive "Makin' Love" is catchy and very 90s. styled in a Sandra St. Victor mode! When I heard "Always" on Ralph's show I knew I had to own this CD. Simply beautiful and a real persistent 80s groove packed with real instruments, this song will be a favourite of mine for many years to come. I am sure at the close of 2009 this will still be a stand-out CD.

There's lots of great indie soul around at the moment and here at www.soulandjazzandfunk.com we're grateful to our colleague at www.soulwalking.co.uk for pointing us to a very strong trio of new albums. First up there's 'These Five Words' from TRISH ANDREWS. You can find out more about TRISH by scrolling back through our news pages, where you'll find an in-depth interview with the lady in which she reveals the real meaning behind the songs on the set. Of those songs, the album's opener, 'Comfort Zone', is currently winning lots of support on the modern soul scene but 'You Know What You Do To Me' and 'Jumpin' And Bumpin' are snappy dancers too. Ballad lovers will connect with 'On My Mind' and 'Makin' Love' but repeated plays will reveal that the album's title cut is the real highlight. Plenty of real soul highlights too on 'If These Walls Could Talk' from DARIEN. The opening cut – 'Just Can't Wait' - will leave you in no doubt about what's in store – proper, tuneful, groove-laden modern soul of the highest order. 'Showya' is another steady foor-tapper; 'Where It's At' has a real lazy, harmonic vibe; and the LP's semi-autobiographical title tune reveals a deeper side to young DARIEN. Bags of depth too on MATT CUSSON'S eponymous 12 tracker. The album offers plenty of variety but 'Could' (an enigmatic duet with SHOSHANA BEAN) has immediate appeal. 'Every Step' is another outstanding cut – sweet and lovely - while a short acappella interlude will make you think you've strayed into a TAKE 6 album. On some cuts there's a feel of JAMES TAYLOR to the music (CUSSON has toured regular with TAYLOR) but overall the sound will recall ROBIN THICKE (without the R&B posturing) or even ROBERT JOHN. For fuller reviews on these three albums go to www.soulwalking.co.uk. For those, now, who like to investigate the harder-to-find-soul, then try www.myspace.com/dorianjames . We can't find out too much about the young Atlanta-based singer. His 'my space' space doesn't feature too much but we've gleaned that he's had a fair share of music biz downs. The ever-tenacious DORIAN currently has a three tracker on offer which shows some real soul potential. 'Nice And Slow' is a crisp mid-tempo beater with a hint of USHER style R&B to it, while 'What's Missing' is a pleasing and melodic cut with a catchy hook and a clever ending.

Tracks like 'Comfort Zone' are wowing the modern soul rooms while other cuts from the LP are being regularly rotated by some of the most discerning soul radio DJs… www.soulandjazzandfunk.com felt the time was right to catch up with TRISH and we began with the obvious and asked about her musical background and influences…
I've been singing since I was in the 3rd grade. The first song I ever learned was "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell... I've had years of vocal training and worked on song writing skills with my vocal coach Janetta Deavers. I love all types of music, but favour Neo-Soul. Influences? Well - Jill Scott, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Maxwell, James Brown, Bobby Caldwell, Dianne Schurr, Musiq Soulchild, Raphael Saddiq to name just a few – but the list could go on and on. Above all, though, I enjoy performing live and getting up close and personal with my audience… to get that natural high from a responsive crowd. With this passion for music I began singing in talent shows, festivals, local venues and with jazz bands, blues bands, and top 40 bands. But I always wanted to have my own style and be my own person so I sorted out my own musicians and became Independent Artist Singer/Songwriter Trish Andrews. Now I find myself opening up for nationally-known artists such as Eric Benet, KEM, Walter Beasley, Mike Phillips, Frankie Beverly & Maze, Cameo, Whodine, The SOS Band and so on.
'These Five Words' is your debut album… Why did you decide the time was right for you to record a whole LP?
I first started out with a 3-Single CD titled "Can't Keep Running". Once everyone heard it they loved it and wanted more songs to listen to… but I didn't have any!. So I teamed up with my producer Rodney Shelton to do an 11 song album project and end it with a bonus track, which was a remix featuring Eddie Owens. We would make the first 3 songs on the album the cuts from the 3-Single CD but we redid them to match the new ones. I wanted to have a little something for everyone on this album so it became a great mix of Jazz, R&B, Soul, and Hip-Hop.
What was the inspiration behind the collection?
I already knew the whole project would be about love and positive relationships, with grown up yet sexy lyrics. I would say 80% of this CD is sexually-driven but with clean sexual content in a round about way! I do think that a lot of today's music is missing that "Real Music" and "Real Lyric" feel. No one hardly talks about real love anymore. In my mind, I feel love still exists so through my music and lyrics, I wanted to bring that magical feeling back. For me, love should be spontaneous, fun, serious, exhilarating and emotional. On the album therefore, the song "You Know What You Do To Me" is about fun sex, while "On My Mind" is about serious sex. Then again "These Five Words" praises the whole natural high/spontaneous type of sex while "Making Love" focuses on emotional sex. These types of intimate moments are driven through everyday love and relationships and this is what helps keep that special fire burning within one another… so very important to help build a strong and healthy relationship! So through my songs, I expressed it all without being too vulgar… I hope!
Do you write all your own material?
Yes, I write the melody lines, the chorus, and the verses. And my producer Rodney Shelton writes the instrumentation. With the exception of "Can't Keep Running", "Feels Like Heaven", and "Already". Those three we wrote together.
Tell us more about your producer, Rodney Shelton.
Rodney's major role was as arranger of the tracks and getting the whole team together - my engineer, background singer and live musicians and then making sure all my mixes were exactly right. Rodney has already worked with many greats such as James Brown, Shirley Caesar, Keith Washington, Billy Griffin, Howard Hewitt and many more.
What are your hopes for the album and your immediate ambitions?
Well I hope to perform the album world-wide. And I definitely want to perform live in the UK. Soul lovers in the UK have shown me and my music so much real love and support . My dream would be to get on a major tour with someone like Maxwell, KEM, or Eric Benet... I think their style and my style are somewhat similar.
….. And the future for Trish Andrews?
To run my journey on this album and start my next journey for the next album. What will I write about next? I'm anxious to see what album 2 brings out of me.
TRISH ANDREWS' These Five Words' is out now and available via the usual internet outlets – or go to www.trishandrews.com

I never have written a review, but I had to for this one. Amazon recommended it to me and I listened to the first few samples and bought it right away! I love the way this album grooves. She has a smooth and soothing voice over great music. This album reminds you just how good R&B music is.
