SOY DISCO
Soy Disco was formed by the end of 2008, after the break up of Jonas Ceballos’s previous band, he got together with Alex Mayaute to compose music and then start this new dance rock project, to complete the line up, they invited Jose Torres and Sergio Alvarez, whom they came from the same process of band disintegration. They name the project Soy Disco.
The influences of the band are: rock, new wave, disco, indie, alternative, which define the sound of Soy Disco. Soy Disco’s music is very catchy and you get into it almost instantly, you could say that, Soy Disco music, is made for all types of people.
In a short period of time the popularity of the band has been increased throughout myspace, facebook and the local LA scenes. Getting the attention from media such as rockeros.net, alborde.com, galleria alternativa TV elcalabozoradio.com among others… They’ve had the opportunity to perform in very important venues such as House of Blues of Hollywood opening up for Monte Negro, also being selected as one of the finalist of the Burger King Tu Ciudad Tu Musica 2009, in which Soy Disco won the contest on April 26th of 2009 at Fiesta Broadway, sharing the stage with international artist Pewee.
Two weeks later, they traveled to Miami to appear on national television popular program Escandalo TV, to promote their grand prize, which includes besides the trip to Miami, cash money , a branded guitar and multiples national radio and TV interviews which included interview with Carlos Alvarez from Klove, and other…
Taking advantage of the trip, they were able to booked two shows one at Jazid Club in Miami Beach and the other on Havana Dreams in Miami, where Soy Disco were able to capture peoples attention and received a great response for them. Upon their return, they performed at The Troubadour in West Hollywood, being the special guest for the Curanderos’s CD release party.
Posterior they were invited to Descarga, produced by Telemundo and mun2 in Universal City Walk, where they headlined the show, getting everyone’s attention specially from the younger crowd, some of them were singing along their first popular song "Silueta" that at the end of the set, they ask for more songs, having the band selling Cds, shirts and signing autographs right after the show.
They were invited to participate to Las Fiestas Patrias celebrated at Plazita Olvera in downtown Los Angeles, performing in fornt of 1,000 of peoples by the end of the summer the band began touring CA for 12 days, which they called Soy Discalifornia Tour 2009 ending their last date at the popular Alborde Acoustics Sessions with a full house.
By the end of the 2009 the band began to record their full-length album, which tentative will be ready before the summer of this year, in the meantime the band took a little break in January of this year for a special performance at The Conga Room opening for Latin Grammy winner Natalia LaFourcade in January and Aleks Syntek in February, both shows were sold out. Special presentation as part of the 5 de Mayo celebration presented by Exitos 93.9 FM at Plaza Mexico and at Staples Center on May 16th for the Budweisser Cup.
The band is in the process of recording their album.

  Six years ago, Jonas Ceballos left his family and his home in Mexico City to pursue a music career in the United States.
  
  “I wanted to come [to the U.S.] to make contacts in the music business and to be given the chance to play live,” says Ceballos, who hasn’t been back to Mexico City since he left.
  
  Ceballos has played drums in several Los Angeles bands and been making ends meet as an assistant in downtown L.A.’s fashion district. It was only recently, though, that he found his true calling: playing keyboard and singing lead vocals with Soy Disco.
  
  Ceballos may soon be able to quit his day job. In less than a year, Soy Disco has become one of the hottest indie-Latin bands in Los Angeles. They mesh perfectly with a current music scene that yearns for the irony of ’80s-style pop, synthesizers and songs about love. The trio is a spunky burst of vividly colored gear and electro-pop music, like MGMT meets Lady Gaga.
  
  “We always dress in bright colors and wear skinny jeans,” Ceballos says.
  
  Ceballos’ getup choice usually includes lemon-colored skinny jeans with a prominent keyboard belt buckle and a vintage Beatles T-shirt with a striped scarf draped around his neck.
  
  Aside from their saucy, disco-inspired wardrobe, Soy Disco delivers tight music that’s becoming increasingly well-received: Last spring, they won a large-scale Latin music battle-of-the-bands in L.A. called Tu Ciudad, Tu Música at La Fiesta Broadway. They collected $2,500, a collector’s edition guitar from Burger King sponsors and, most importantly, international media coverage that included a trip to Miami to play a series of live shows and an appearance on “Escandalo TV.”
  
  “It was amazing to win,” Ceballos says. “All the bands who played were so good.”
  
  It was a big feat for a band that had only been together for a few months. It was an even bigger feat for a band whose English remains rough; guitarist Alex Mayaute is from Peru and drummer Sergio Alvarez grew up in a Spanish-speaking household in L.A. Taking the first place prize at Tu Ciudad, Tu Música has opened up many doors for Soy Disco; they have been getting opportunities to play renowned Angelino venues like the Troubadour and House of Blues.
  
  “We are so happy to be playing at such famous places,” Ceballos says.
  
  And the venues keep getting better; on Aug. 4, Soy Disco played the Universal City Walk for several hundred people who sang along to “Silueta,” one of their most popular songs.
  
  Soy Disco’s stop at Giovane’s this Saturday in Salinas is the second to last show of their tour. In October, the band will head into the studio to record their first full-length album.

With the first place title came a whopping check of $2,500, a Burger King collector’s edition guitar and international media coverage.
  
  After merely some months as a collaborative band under the name “Soy Disco”, Jonas Ceballos (vocals and keyboards), Alex Mayaute (guitar), Jose Torres (bass) and Sergio Alvarez (drums) are, in their words, living proof that hard work pays off. “This is all consequence of the hours that each one of us puts into rehearsing, recording and making sure that the sound that we play is our style” states lead singer Jonas. “We made it through the semifinals, the finals and now winning the title and performing in front of all those people in an event as important as the Fiesta Broadway, is well, unbelievable!”

  Soy Disco Wins @ Fiesta BroadwayEach having played highly promoted shows at venues such as the prominent House of Blues, Sunset and having shared the stage with groundbreaking bands such as Monte Negro, Jonas, Jose and Sergio assure us that the Tu Ciudad, Tu Música win comes as confirmation that they are on the right path. Nonetheless, this recent win also urges the band to proceed with their plans of “bombarding”, as Jonas puts it, Mexico with their electro-rock songs. “We’ve seen what L.A. bands have done in Mexico as far as playing before massive audiences and reaching a wider audience,” he states. “First Enjambre and now Pastilla have left L.A. to pursue success in Mexico, and we plan to do the same.”
  
  Soy Disco performing at Fiesta BroadwayJonas refers to two of L.A.’s most followed, and loved, indie bands of the Latin alternative community. Enjambre, who’s trajectory spans over 5 years and Pastilla who is known as one of the pioneering bands of the L.A. alternative scene have both took a break from playing local L.A. venues to spread their wings out to our friends south of the border. Enjambre most recently landed a spot in the coveted Vive Latino, which is the equivalent of a Coachella. “Hopefully,” states Jonas “after all the media coverage that comes out of this and after all of the self-marketing and promoting we put into our band, we’ll be able to follow in Enjambre’s and Pastilla’s footsteps and land ourselves a spot in Vive Latino as well.”
  
  For the time being Vive Latino will be placed on their to-do list and replaced by an upcoming gig at the Troubadour come May 13th. The West Hollywood performance will have the band opening up for another local L.A. favorite, Curanderos, who will be officially releasing their self-titled CD the night of. And if all goes as Jonas plans, they too will soon be releasing their first official album. “The $2,500 will be put into furthering Soy Disco’s career,” he states. “We’re currently shopping around for recording deals and trying to figure out what works best for the band. But without a doubt,” he concludes “Soy Disco will have an album and two music videos out sooner than later.”

Usualmente cuando aquellos músicos se imaginan alcanzando sus metas, no dejan espacios para imaginarse la posibilidad de tener que intentarlo mil veces, y cuando surge la adversidad, para muchos el rendirse suele ser la mejor opción. El sistema no es el más justo, ni el mas claro, pero hay una agrupación angelina que nos demuestra día a día que con determinación, y creatividad se pueden crear verdaderas chispas para alumbrar un camino directo al éxito. Estamos hablando de la sensación del momento, la banda Soy Disco.
  
  Mientras nosotros hacíamos nuestra lista de Navidad en Diciembre, Soy Disco se preparaba para lo que fuera el inicio de una campaña tan acelerada que hasta los tomo por sorpresa a ellos mismos. Si el nombre de Soy Disco no se te hace familiar, no te sientas fuera de onda, pues aunque este grupo lleva varios triunfos bajo el brazo, Soy Disco no tiene mas de 5 meses de edad. Esta banda esta compuesta por 4 chicos con influencias musicales muy diferentes, y esto cae en evidencia al momento en que los escuchamos en el escenario, pues el sonido fresco y novedoso de esta banda tiene elementos de varios géneros como: dance, rock, electro, y si, como su nombre predica, mucho disco. Tubimos la oportunidad de platicar con Jonás Ceballos, quien aporta a la banda con voz y teclados, y entendimos entonces realmente quien es Soy Disco.
  
  Antes de platicar con Jonás, el equipo de rockeros.net se lanzo a Metrópoli, donde Soy Disco compartiría escenario con el grupo español Oscar Tiene Alas. Metrópoli es un evento social que se lleva acabo periódicamente en la ciudad de Los Angeles. Por este evento han desfilado los mejores DJ’s como Marcelo Cunning de Nacotheque, y Gil Cerezo de Kinky, además cuenta con presentaciones en vivo de los grupos mas aclamados del momento como Monareta y La Prohibida. Los temas de las noches de Metrópoli siempre soy tan originales como lo son divertidos y por lo tanto el escenario perfecto para una banda como Soy Disco.
  
  El evento que se llevo acabo en el recién renovado Mal’s Bar en el corazón de Los Angeles, consiguió casi un lleno total y se convirtió en “the place to be” para un Viernes. Soy Disco quien fue la banda telonera en el escenario con un set medio corto pero efectivo nos recordó que aunque la agrupación no lleva mucho tiempo, ellos no son novatos a la hora de tocar ante un público, pues la mayoría de los integrantes de esta banda vienen de otros proyectos musicales que culminaron recientemente. Cuando Soy Disco abrió su set, la pista estaba completamente llena, y al tocar canciones como “Silueta,” mucha de la gente ya coreaba la letra. Este dato es realmente sorprendente pues Soy Disco hasta ese momento solo se había presentado 5 veces. Cabe mencionar que Soy Disco abrió en el legendario House of Blue de Hollywood en lo que fuera solo su tercera presentación, donde compartió escenario con otra banda Angelina de nombre Monte Negro
  
  Soy DiscoMientras Soy Disco terminaba su set, me puse a recordar aquellos tiempos cuando los chicos tocaban en sus agrupaciones pasadas. Recuerdo el esfuerzo de los chicos por lograr acaparar un público tan entregado como ese día en Metrópoli. No es por menos validar el desempeño de sus proyectos anteriores, pero aparte de haber sido un genero completamente diferente, era genero realmente competitivo, y el reunir la cantidad de gente que se reunió ese día para ver a Soy Disco, no lo hace una banda que solo lleva 5 tocadas.
  
  Pero después de tanto recuerdo la realidad es que Soy Disco fue todo un éxito esa noche en Metrópoli y mientras el DJ Fancy Guey se encargaba de las mezclas, los españoles Oscar Tiene Alas se preparaban para su tan esperado show. Estos chicos con su sonido peculiar considerado Indi Pop han causado mucha conmoción sus canciones súper bailables y llenas de funk. Con temas como Mrs. Moss y Bombón, Oscar Tiene Alas cerró la noche como se merecía, con muchos Beats y ese acid funk que los caracteriza.
  
  Aunque disfrutamos mucho de la musica de Oscar Tiene Alas, a rockeros.net le interesaba conocer mas sobre Soy disco, y como les había mencionado anteriormente, tubimos la oportunidad de platicar con Jonás, (vocalista y tecladista del grupo) y pudimos aprender un poco mas sobre lo que ha logrado esta banda en tan corto tiempo. Resulta según Jonás que el truco es “ser gente noble,” y después añadió que la agrupación surgió de estar en el lugar correcto a la hora precisa, ya que 3 de los 4 miembros acababan o estaban en proceso de culminación en sus proyectos musicales.
  
  Por su parte Jonás venia de tocar la batería en Azur, banda que recién decidió desintegrase, y así poco a poco nos fue contando como Jose Torres (bajo) quien vino de Niña Azufre junto con Sergio Álvarez (batería) de 3 Colores, de la misma manera se unieron a este proyecto. Por su parte, Alex (guitarra) también tuvo su buena dosis de participación en varios proyectos anteriores.
  
  En el momento que estos chicos se juntaros, surgió un verdadero entendimiento musical aunque el género fuese completamente diferente. Cada chavo venia de un estilo aunque no ajeno al dance, si mas tirado al rock alternativo. “Eventos como Metrópoli, Automatico, Mucho Wednesday, y Turn Off The Radio influyen mucho en el estilo de música que creamos” comento Jonás, refiriéndose al movimiento de la música electrónica y dance. “Todos tenemos gustos diferentes como: Manu Chao, The Strokes, y hasta Silvio Rodríguez” comento el vocalista y termino diciendo que les encantaría tocar en México donde existe un mejor entendimiento por el genero electrónico, y tocar a la par de bandas como Plastilina Mosh, Kinky, y Susie 4 seria un gran honor.
  
  Pero antes que esta banda piense escaparse a otro país, Soy Disco tiene que conquistar el publico angelino pues es uno de los 6 finalistas del concurso “Tu ciudad, Tu música” llevado acabo por la empresa Burger King. Soy disco compite por el primer lugar donde los premios incluyen la oportunidad de presentarse por todo el país en una gira nacional. Aunque este concurso estará muy reñido por estar compitiendo con otras bandas locales como Menores y Femi Tabu. Las mejores 4 bandas de este concurso se estarán presentadas en la Fiesta Broadway el día 26 de Abril en el escenario principal. Las mejores 4 bandas serán escogidas por los fans vía votos. Tú puedes ayudar a esta banda llegar hasta ese escenario donde tocara ante más de cinco mil personas.
  
  Vale la pena apoyar a esta banda, que de haberse desintegrado de sus proyectos anteriores, rápidamente recogieron su paso, y trabajaron duro para lograr lo que han logrado hasta este momento. Soy Disco estará trabajado duro para poder terminar su disco a principios de otoño del 2009. Comento Jonás que seguirán aprendiendo “un músico nunca deja de aprender.” Con esto Soy Disco esta demostrándonos que para poder triunfar en una Metrópoli como Los Angeles, es importante renovarte, y dejarte llevar por el arte y otras culturas y lo demás déjaselo a una chispa perfecta.

Telemundo and Mun2, in collaboration with Citywalk at Universal Studios, are presenting the weekly musical events in support of musical talent and in support of your wallet.
  
  “We stand by our firm belief of providing quality entertainment at these top-notch events, especially during these challenging economic times,” states Jose Valle, President and General Manager of KVEA Telemundo Los Angeles. The July 12th kick-off marks the third year for the musical event, that this time around counts with the scheduled performances of some of the Latin alternative community’s emerging talent. Indie pop band Soy Disco, who is currently competing to play two concerts with rock icon, Beto Cuevas, has placed this musical event on their calendar as well. “We are very happy with the invitation and with the opportunity to promote our music to families who are not familiar with our music,” states the band. “It’s a great responsibility considering that Telemundo is such an important network that caters mostly to a different musical genre, and yet they are giving us this opportunity to promote ours.” Accompanying Soy Disco on stage as part of the event’s alternative night showcase are Monte Carlo 76, Santero and the Mucho Wednesday’s DJs.
  
  Alex Pels, General Manager for mun2, believes that the event is “a true reflection of the cultural diversity that exists in Los Angeles" and that "Descarga offers fans and viewers an event that speaks to their cultural roots.” Combining their cultural roots with the alternative music set that is being presented by local L.A. talent, Descarga will also entertain the crowd with cumbia tunes, sonidero danceables, reggaeton beats, pop talent and regional Mexican favorites. Attendees will also be able to snag autographed posters by popular Spanish soap opera actors as well as get to know the popular Penelope Menchaca of the Telemundo dating games “12 Corazones”, Jessie Camacho, host of Telemundo’s “Descontrol” as well as mun2’s Yarel Ramos, Crash & Yasmin.
  
  The summer event series will present a different showcase each Sunday evening from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. beginning Sunday, July 12th through Sunday, August 30th.

On this special night, hundreds of people gathered at Universal Studios City Walk to witness the third annual "Descarga" event which highlighted "Los Sonidos Alternativos de California". Soy Disco performed an electrifying 30-minutes set that appeared insufficient for the pumped up crowd that screamed for more and more. Fans sang along to Soy Disco's popular, "Silueta" and one die-hard fan surprised the band with a cut out of fluorescent pants to honor Soy Disco's trademarked flamboyant style
  
  sd It wasn't since Burger King's "Tu Musica, Tu Ciudad" musical competition presented at La Fiesta Broadway that Soy Disco had the opportunity to perform in front of an all ages audience in a family oriented festival. As part of this important performance, Soy Disco also sold and signed numerous demos and tshirts for their fans...most of which wore the shirts immediately and throughout the concert.
  
  Also performing that night were L.A. locals Monte Carlos 76, from San Francisco Santero and the Mucho Wednesday DJ’s, DJ ‘Pitzu’ and DJ Frank Leopold. Prior to their performances, the bands and DJ's took part in a Meet&Greet with the winners of Telemundo's and Mun'2's VIP packages that included a Meet&Greet with all of the artists, backstage access and a goodie bag full of demos of each band, t-shirts, stickers and goodies galore. Soy Disco's "Descarga" performance is by far one of the most important and successful showcases that they have given Angelenos thus far.

  Esta semana, la banda angelina Soy Disco emitió un comunicado oficial donde anuncia que tomará un re...Esta semana, la banda angelina Soy Disco emitió un comunicado oficial donde anuncia que tomará un receso de las grabaciones de su primer álbum para abrir el concierto de Natalia Lafourcade en Los Ángeles, el cual se realizará el próximo jueves 28 de enero en el Conga Room.
  
  Según la misiva, la banda adelanta que su primer larga duración contendrá 10 temas inéditos y estiman que verá la luz a principios del verano de este año. Según nos informa su manager y productor, Oscar Coronel (exLa Cruda), la banda se encuentra a finales del camino en las labores creativas. “Estamos grabando en KingSize Sound Labs de Eagle Rock, empezamos a finales de noviembre y pensamos terminar para finales de febrero y son 10 canciones las que incluirá el álbum. Los productores del disco son Soy Disco y Oscar Coronel, es un trabajo conjunto que hemos venido haciendo desde septiembre cuando empezamos la preproducción”.
  
  La súbita eclosión de Soy Disco en la escena angelina en 2009 fue catapultada con su triunfo en el concurso “Burger King Tu Ciudad Tu Música 2009”, lo cual fue seguido por una extensa cobertura de prensa y apariciones en LA Fiesta Broadway, Descarga (Mun2 /Telemundo), Fiestas Patrias, apariciones en TV y radio a nivel nacional e internacional. Además, fueron invitados especialmente para la celebración del 5to. Aniversario de Galería Alternativa. Posteriormente, la banda inició la gira “Soy Discalifornia Tour 2009” recorriendo California durante 12 fechas en distintas localidades, culminando en las ya clásicas y concurridas Sesiones Acústicas de Al Borde en el Este de Los Ángeles.
  
  Soy Disco en estudio
  
  Con buenos augurios entraron a estudio a finales de año, confiando en registrar el contagioso sonido electro funk que los distingue en vivo. Según nos cuenta Coronel, el concepto del disco “está enfocado más que nada en el upbeat tempo de la música 80s retro y new wave, mezclado con los sonidos actuales como el electro y post punk”.
  
  Soy Disco está integrada por Jonás Ceballos (voz y teclados), Alex Mayaute (guitarra), Sergio Álvarez (batería). En la producción independiente se han visto auxiliados por la presencia del bajista Moisés Baqueiro (Bayú, Los Abandoned). Coronel nos informó que existe la posibilidad de que otro bajista de una banda muy conocida internacionalmente complete algunas canciones. ”Ya nos dio el ‘Sí’ verbalmente, pero todavía estamos en pláticas para confirmar su colaboración en el disco, lo anunciaremos pronto”, afirmó Oscar. También planteó que están planeando grabar un video dependiendo de cuál canción elijan como single, que hasta el momento parece ser “Silueta”.
