"ERICK DESHAUN DORRIS RELEASES RETROSPECTIVE COLLECTION FOR FREE DOWNLOAD"
Erick Deshaun Dorris, the Chicago-based musician, today releases a retrospective collection and previously unavailable music through a meticulously curated Bandcamp site. Until now, the majority of these recordings had been available only at live performances and hand-to-hand sales.
EDDMUSIC.BANDCAMP.COM launches close to ten years after Dorris’ first recording session. It includes new artwork, artist commentary and a digital album of B-sides and intimate, scratch tracks. Much of the music is released, intentionally, without any remixing or re-mastering.
Dorris was born in Joliet, a suburb 40 miles southwest of the Chicago skyline, and was raised in a conservative, Pentecostal community. He recalls the ten years after leaving Joliet and his journey as a self-managed, self-produced singer-songwriter.
"When I graduated Millikin [University] and went to the Philadelphia area, I didn’t know what I even wanted to sound like. Those recordings are the most interesting to me because I can hear so many things… and was tempted to make corrections during this project. But, I want listeners to hear what they heard; to have a sensory memory.”
“When I came back to Chicago, I just needed work. […] and piano players get jobs in cabaret bars. ‘Live at the Orphanage’ shows what that sounded like. When I started playing in bands and getting cast in shows - that inspired a different sound too. You can lose very important, intangible things in any editing process, if you aren’t careful... I wanted to tell the whole story as truthfully as possible. Not just for listeners […] but to remind me."
Dorris has landed soundly in Chicago with feet in the music and theatre community. His soul-rock band, The Bored of Education, has been picking up steam, being billed with Smoking Popes and playing alongside Chicago-staple, Robbie Folks. Last fall, he portrayed Morris Day in a concert production of Purple Rain. Most recently, he’s graced variety shows like The Paper Machete and Scott Free’s Homolatte. He is also a musician and actor for Barrel of Monkeys theatre company.
"I kept meeting these amazing people and getting these breaks. The challenge has been connecting all of that work. [...] believing that there is a through-line. I didn’t arrive at this moment haphazardly. There’s a lot of grace, but there’s also a lot of hard work involved."
The Erick Deshaun Dorris retrospective collection is available at www.eddmusic.bandcamp.com and offers free download to all listeners.
