Biography
"Lovely...strong and expressive," comments Jazz critic David Adler, (New York Times, Downbeat); and actor Phillip Burrill says, "A voice like silk on bare skin!" From JAZZ, BROADWAY and BOSSA to CLASSIC POP-ROCK and CABARET, singer and pianist ALEXANDRA FREDERICK does it all in her own special style. She also sings in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese.
Alexandra, who is British-American, performs for some of the top Manhattan venues. For the last few months she's been singing Jazz and French Cabaret with guitarist Tsuyoshi Furutsu at ALOUETTE BISTRO (Upper West Side); has brought her trio to Midtown hotspot TOMI JAZZ CLUB; and entertained the dinner crowds at Little Italy's newest PIANO BAR, MAMBO 'TALIANO. Holiday entertainment in Midtown includes concerts at OLYMPIC TOWERS ATRIUM and DAG HAMMARSKJOLD PLAZA. Alexandra's also been keeping busy with a number of private engagements - for the U.N. PERMANENT MISSION TO INDIA; W HOTEL TIMES SQUARE; FIREBIRD RUSSIAN RESTAURANT; LOTOS CLUB and NESTLE U.S.A. Last summer Alexandra was a Metrostar competitor (with press coverage) and had her track "When in Rome" selected for Women of Substance Radio (WOSR). She also participated in NPR's online article about women's experiences in the music industry.
A versatile talent, Alexandra has counted both QUENTIN CRISP and H.R.H. PRINCE CHARLES amongst her audiences and has "jammed" with BILLY JOEL. The musician who now calls New York home was raised in England. Following her passion for the Great American Songbook, Alexandra won a scholarship in the US and studied with jazz legends SHEILA JORDAN and MARK MURPHY. She gained a B.F.A. in Jazz Vocal Performance, Summa Cum Laude, from the CITY COLLEGE OF NEW YORK. Hired as a backup vocalist for the "Tribute to Max" at Aaron Davis Hall, she sang with MAX ROACH, DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER and FRANK FOSTER; EARTHA KITT and HARRY BELAFONTE also gave performances. Alexandra has been presented by film actor BARRY BOSTWICK ("The Rocky Horror Picture Show"), has fronted with Latin Bandleader RAY SANTOS ("The Mambo Kings") and concertizes with Broadway star SARAH RICE ("Sweeney Todd").
Alexandra has also appeared in Europe and the U.K.; entertained on cruise ships; and been featured nationally: CURRENT RESIDENCIES: Alouette French Bistro; Lenox Hill Neighborhood House. FESTIVALS: International Women in Jazz at St. Peter's Midtown; Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival, DE. HOTELS: St. Regis Hotel; New York Helmsley Hotel; Rye Hilton; Short Hills Hilton, NJ; "New Year's Eve" at Garden Gables Inn, Lenox, MA (third consecutive year). CLUBS: Metropolitan Club; University Club; Ridgewood Country Club, NJ.
