Biography

The California Cowboy Band has been bringing their music to audiences for more than fifteen years. Touring the west, playing Cowboy Treks, they’ve played clubs, festivals, and horse rides. Musical influences range from cowboy, to contemporary. They have performed at the Autry Museum, and at The Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival many times. The horseback rides where they have performed include Rancheros Visitadores, Los Caballeros Catalina Trek, and Vaqueros Del Desierto.... the host band for the National TV show Heart of Western Music, CD was in the top twenty on the WMA Chart.

INFLUENCES:
The California Cowboy Band writes original songs, and steals the best sounds of Danny Timms and Kris Kristofferson, Rusty Richards, Roy Rogers, Willy Nelson, and Merle Haggard.

Discography

Their CD's are,"Riding Catalina Again"and, "Poems of the Trail" A wide array of DJs are playing several of their songs, and poems. This CD was in the top twenty,WMA (Western Music Association) DJ playlists of WMA disc jockeys. The song 'Cowboy Blue' was selected as the Western Song of The Year by The AWA (Academy of Western Artists) for 2010. There is a music video for the song 'Dying Breed' Produced by Brent Deal..... and another video of Riding Catalina Again... both are on youtube

  These guys have been together for about a decade and a half, and the blend and intuition of it definitely shows in their finished product. Most of the arrangements lean toward the Country style with steel guitar and a pronounced backbeat drum, although there are elements of jazz, blues and even some "rinky tink' here too. And yes, some of it rocks, but wow! Everything they do is done so well!! If you can handle Wylie & The Wild West's rockier output, know you won't have to extend even that far with the California Cowboy Band.
  
  There's a strong sense that they are rounded entertainers Along with the varying musical influences there's some good cowboy poetry from Steve Deming as well. "Riding Catalina Again" kicks off with a great cover of Rusty Richards' "Fence Rider." Then they proceed to unveil a string of truly fine original and novelty Western songs. I defy you to get the infectious songs "Cowboy Jazz" and "Cowboy Blue" out of your head!! Or if they don't get you, then "Dying Breed," the title tune "Riding Catalina Again" or the rockier "The Higher The Horse The Harder The Ground" just might. The core of the group is a trio made up of Mel Harker (lead & harmony vocals & songwriting), Craig Ruppert (also lead & harmony vocals & songwriting) and Steve Deming (harmonica & poetry) and they are ably assisted by Teresa James (harmony), Herman Matthews (drums), Terry Wilson (bass & acoustic guitar), Billy Watts (guitars), Jon Regalado (steel/mando/banjo) and Karen Hammack (piano). This album is top quality, all the way!

  Welcome the new CD from the Bard-in-Residence with the popular California cowboy band called...well, "The California Cowboy Band!!"
  
  Despite this album's name, it's not so much about romancing the driving of the dogies and the smell of scorchin' hide. The trail of this title is the trail of life. Often as not Steve Deming will concern himself with how he or someone else feels in a given situation, or with small, meaningful moments in scenes from along that grander trail. Through craftsmanship, his listeners generally find themselves to be the richer for it.
  
  From deeply personal reflections such as "The Santa Ynez Trilogy," dedicated to his wife, to observations found in introspective pieces such as "To Sons Of A Trailrider," "Empty Saddles" or "Harper's Knife," he'll usually make you think...and feel.
  
  Three of these works ("The Bell," "The Bucket," and "The Box") are also found on the California Cowboy Band's recent CD Ridin' Catalina Again. Don't be surprised if those tracks pop forward a bit in presence! I suspect there was some home mastering going on. If the cover looks familiar, you may remember the campfire scene being "emblazened" (pun intended) on T-shirts sported by the Western Music Association's California chapter! The image came from Deming's personal collection.

  About fifteen years ago Justin Scheller, a photographer for Honda R&D Americas, was on a horse ride in the Big Bear area of Southern California and crossed paths with Steve Deming. Justin was taking photographs of the ride and Steve, a WMA member, poet and harmonica player, was performing around the campfire with his band. A photograph emerged from the evening that has become familiar to the WMA as the winner of the T Shirt Design Contest of the California Chapter. The Shirt design submitted by Steve Deming features Justin Scheller's photograph. The photo, is also the cover photo for Steve's new CD, "Poems of the Trail"
  
  "I have had the photo framed in my living room for all these years," said Steve. " I have been haunted by it's quality. " Steve decided to use the picture as his cover photo for the new spoken word CD. As the Chairman of the Publicity Committee for the California Chapter, he decided to take a lead role in developing the T Shirt entrant that was an instant winner. The idea now is to select album art each year for the T Shirt contest that will feature great art of the WMA membership. The art and it's exposure to the community will generate the publicity that Rob Gandel had in mind when he suggested the T Shirt program to the Publicity Committee in June of 2009. Steve is with the WMA member, California Cowboy Band, performers at the Showcase and Awards in November. Justin is enjoying the appreciation of his art work on his 2XL T Shirt.
  

Setlist

Typical set list includes all original songs on album, cowboy poetry, plus covers of songs like"Moment of Forever", "Pancho and Lefty", "Amarillo by Morning." Sets are 1 hr., typically and length depends on show. More than 4 hours worth of material.
