Biography

Composer and guitarist Oscar Peñas epitomizes a new wave of emerging artists who are an integral part of New York’s flourishing music scene. Born in Barcelona, Spain and residing permanently in New York, his compositions transcend different genres, cultures, generations, and styles within his art form.
He is always working towards the nonconformist process of creating a distinct voice to be developed into his own personal musical language. His intentions are far a way from emulating the sound of the Jazz Masters, his style has being described in WNYC as "...transnational cool..." and by Budd Kopman for Cadence "Peñas is not a technical guitar player, but more of a sound sculptor..."

His mother always played LP’s at home and encouraged him to play the guitar. Although, his grandfather, from his mother side, played trumpet as a sideman with ballroom orchestras of the day like Xavier Cugat's, at nine he decided by himself to start his training as classical guitarist. At 17 he switched gears to pursue a musical career in Jazz.

Berklee was his first choice and after he graduated cum lade, Oscar returned to Barcelona and started to play in Festivals and jazz venues, also recorded his two first albums with the Oscar Peñas Group under the label Fresh Sound New Talent: “Astronautus” (2003) and “The Return of Astronautus” (2006).
In 2005 he returns to Boston to earn his Masters in Jazz Studies at the New England Conservatory where he studies with Danilo Perez and Charlie Banacos among others. After graduation he relocated to New York where he presently lives, teaching and actively playing in jazz clubs in the city, Europe and South America. December 2010, Peñas performed at the Jazz Plaza, Habana Jazz Festival in Cuba

Peñas has recorded and self produced his third cd "From Now On" (2011) under the Brooklyn based indie label BJUR, a musicians collective that wants to set their creativity out in these times of music industry crisis. The new album includes an international line up of musicians: Richie Barshay on drums and percussion, Dan Blake on saxes, Moto Fukushima on six string electric bass. As guests, Franco Pinna on bombo legüero and the legendary Gil Goldstein on accordion and piano. This album is about to be released in fall 2011.

His dreams, tour all over the world, with his music!
