DOCTOR KRÁPULA is a Latin alternative rock band, a band that carries a transformation message and an act of consciousness through their hybrid popular music. The band was born in 1998 in Bogotá Colombia with 5 musicians. In their 10 year career and 4 albums [el Carnaval de la Apatilla- The Apatilla Carnival] [Dele la Welta al Disco- Flip this record] [Bombea] and [Sagrado Corazón-Sacred Heart] the members of Doctor Krápula have made themselves a part of the conscious artistic movement in Latin America.

A powerful live set has been able to impact the heart and minds of over one million people in over 500 live presentations. The devotion and support from their fans have made possible 10 Shock Music Awards, 4 Nuestra Tierra awards, 3 Nominations in LVMAs (latin MTV Awards), 1 nomination to 40 Principales Awards in Spain, in addition to several good critics from different media thanks to their music and actions.

Doctor Krapula's music is been made to dance to, to reflect upon and has been able to burst into different audiences without ever compromising its revolutionary lyrical essence.

Now, at the cusp of its popularity, the seven-man band sharply veered from its old course of action, signing a deal with Sony BMG in Colombia that includes not only a record contract but a deal with the company’s Management arm Day One.
  
  The new Alliance come together July 4, with the release of the group’s fourth album “Sagrado Corazon”. More important, it illustrates how artists and labels are adapting to a changing industry. In signing Doctor Krapula, Sony BMG doesn’t expect to make big money in record sales but in ancillary income from publishing to shows. Likewise, Doctor Krapula was willing to give up a piece of the revenue base it has painstakingly built for a decade in exchange for management, peace of mind and the possibility of growth.
  
  “We’ve seen a wave of acts leaving their labels,” lead singer Mario Muñoz says. “We’re doing the opposite. We felt we were on the verge of an international explosion and we couldn’t do it as an indie or with a small company.”
  
  Like most bands in Colombia, Doctor Krapula is not a huge seller. The group’s previous album, “Bombea,” came out on indie label origin and has sold 10.000 copies (gold in Colombia). All told, the act’s sales don’t exceed 20.000 copies. But the group is widely recognized as one of the genre’s leaders in the country and has multiple radio singles and MTV Latin America nominations to its name. In fact, the band is so successful that last year it played 60-plus shows, some for more than 50.000 people.
  
  Members thought the time was ripe to think about expanding and began conversations with major labels. Sony was favored, among other things, precisely because it ofered a management option.
  “We were the accountants, the lawyers, the collectors,” Muñoz says. “I wanted to take that off our plate.”
  “When we signed them, we weren´t thinking about CD sales but about taking their music and massage to the masses, making their music available in digital formats and via constant and massive performances,” says Andres Lopez president of sony BMG Andes (which covers Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru). “Most important, they gave us their management. Because of what they've accomplished in the past 10 years, they can generate income different from simple music sales, and that allows us to invest heavily.”
  
  Already, Sony BMG closed a deal for DOCTOR KRAPULA to be the colombian face of Converse's connectivity camping, which paired artist with the brand in 75 countries. The campaing's black-and-white art, highlights the individuality of each group member, who describe themselves as “guys who live in a Latin-American city, who live in a barrio, who hear music, who each has [his] own identity.”
  
  “They’re a different kind of band”, Day One Entertainment director María Isabel Ramírez says. “They have an opinion and something interesting to say. And I think that this sets them aside fron many other band.”
  
  Although Doctor Krapula's music has definite social content -dealing with the environment and its attitude toward life and the world- the message is subtle. But the band is also eminently comercial. Release of “Sagrado Corazon” was supported by a mass concert at Bogota’s Parque Simon Bolivar venue which fits 20.000. Those who wanted to sit in the VIP section were asked to present proof of purchase of the album. The group has continued to perform at mass events in the ensuing weeks while also promoting heavily on radio an MTV.
  
  “We’ve always made a fusion of rock, ska and punk with popular Latin-American music.” Muñoz says. “That is the success of the group. It’s music that appeals to rockers, to older women, to children. It’s a mix of who we are.”

  Aunque las comparaciones son odiosas, para los que aún no saben de Doctor Krápula, una de las bandas colombianas con mayor proyección internacional, hay que decir que su sonido trae a la memoria el acento de los buenos tiempos de bandas como Los Fabulosos Cadillacs, que mezclando rock y ska con ecos autóctonos como la cumbia o la salsa, ventilaron el escenario de la música latina. Así es esta banda: autóctona, original, fresca y atrevida.
  
  La agrupación, compuesta por Mario Muñoz en el micrófono, David Jaramillo en el bajo, Germán Martínez y Dib Hadra en la guitarra, Freddy Caldas en la percusión, Nico Cabrera en la batería y Sergio Acosta en el acordeón y los teclados, completa, con Sagrado corazón, su cuarto trabajo de estudio.
  
  "Con este disco nos ha ido muy bien. Creo que después de abrir un camino enorme a nivel nacional, llegó la hora de internacionalizar un poco más nuestra música, de tal manera que si un argentino, un mexicano o un venezolano la oye, la pueda entender" asegura Mario, un joven delgado con bastante carácter y personalidad.
  
  Con casi 10 años de carrera, Doctor Krápula se ha ganado el respeto de un público exigente que busca, además de buen show y buena pinta, grandes dosis de buena música y mensajes que llenen el vacío de la sobreoferta de hits comerciales que redundan todos en lo mismo.
  
  Desde sus inicios, cuando siendo más jóvenes se subían a la tarima de Rock al Parque (el festival más grande de rock en Latinoamérica, que se realiza todos los años en Bogotá) y la energía desbordaba por el escenario, hasta el presente, su personalidad sigue intacta, a pesar de que ahora cuentan con disquera multinacional y su fama ha sobrepasado las fronteras.
  
  "Tanto con este disco como con los anteriores hemos insistido que la música tiene que ser una herramienta social de comunicación; creemos que existe un enorme hueco artístico frente a los temas sociales y ambientales, y no negociamos el carácter de nuestra música", asegura Mario con vehemencia.
  
  Y es así tal cual como sus seguidores se han enamorado de ellos, y aun más cuando ven que además de ser excelentes músicos y de traer ideas innovadoras a los sonidos modernos, siguen siendo tan originales como al comienzo y no se han dejado aún tentar por las mieles de la "música que vende" y han defendido su propuesta, con talento y "berraquera" (valentía), como dirían en su natal Colombia.
  
  Con letras que buscan crear conciencia ambiental, como BAM, o que sientan una protesta contra la desigualdad social (Activación), la banda conjuga en Sagrado Corazón la fuerza del punk, el desparpajo del ska y hasta la nostalgia del son montuno, para crear un color propio, un sonido que desde lejos la identifica y que la señala diferente dentro del género.
  
  Como dice una de sus letras, "Camarón que se duerme se lo lleva la corriente/ y si nos lleva la corriente estamos mal", Doctor Krápula no se duerme ni se conforma con lanzar mensajes al vacío. Su iniciativa de cambio, y el mensaje que busca transmitirle a su público se traduce en este disco, y también en su participación en iniciativas como La Marcha Mundial por La Paz, que iniciará en octubre en Nueva Zelanda y culminará en Argentina en enero del 2010.
  
  Dentro de sus planes está iniciar este verano una gira por países como México, Venezuela y España, y a finales del año visitar Estados Unidos.*

When Doctor Krapula's show is part of a festival, the concert usually lasts 45 minutes, but when the band is giving a concert alone the show lasts an hour and a half. Music always starts and doesn't stops until the end of the concert!
