Dave Sampson is on a little summer vacation of sorts from his home in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Instead of heading to the sunny south or backpacking across Europe, Dave chose to come to the rocky, fog-blanketed shores of St. John’s to soak up some “cheap beer, great music and good times.”
Sampson is a singer-songwriter who has been active since 2008 and just released his debut EP Short But Sweet last summer. He has played ECMA showcases two years in a row and has already shared stages with the likes of Joel Plaskett, Matt Mays, Jeremy Fisher, David Myles, Tim Chaisson & Mourning Fold and Carleton Stone. After finishing his fourth year at St. FX University and getting a tip from Matt Hornell at the ECMAs on some good places to play here in town, Dave decided to come visit his sister for a couple months and share his endearing brand of folky, acoustic pop with the good people of St. John’s. He has already played the Brimstone and is booked to play Adam Baxter’s Classique Songwriter’s Series at Headquarters on June 29th and July 20th. As today’s track “Gotta Go” demonstrates, Dave writes a great, heartfelt pop song and has a warm, inviting, laid back style that will no doubt appeal to a wide cross section of people. It’s not hard to imagine his music lighting up the radio and drawing crowds this summer here on the local front. Born and raised in Cape Breton, Dave Sampson has been singing melodies and writing music since his early teens. His style is authentic and his stage presence can easily be traced back to his Cape Breton roots with his high-energy shows and passion for performing. Currently finishing up his last year at St. Francis Xavier University, Dave has been juggling music and school for the past four years. However, being in University did not slow him down one bit from taking advantage of the wide variety of playing opportunities to the vast cross section of people attending St. F.X. Dave has developed and gained much of his exposure to date through playing high profile shows in conjunction with St. F.X. University.
He released his first independent EP titled “Short But Sweet” in 2010 and is now in the works of writing his first full-length album. He was well received at the East Coast Music Awards performing on the Discovery Stage showcase in 2010 and also performing in 2011 at the ECMA members lounge. This past summer Dave was able to wrestle his way into the music scene on George St., St. John’s, NL for a number of gigs. He returned to Cape Breton in August 2011 in response to an invitation though Music Nova Scotia and SOCAN, to attend a week-long song-writing camp in Cape Breton, with Grammy Award winner Gordie Sampson and a handful of songwriters form Nova Scotia.
Over the past three years Dave has had the opportunity to share the stage with some of Atlantic Canada’s most talented musicians including Joel Plaskett, Jerry Fisher, Matt Mays, David Myles, Carleton Stone and Tim Chaisson to name a few. He has also co-written songs with artists such as Carleton Stone, Mo Kenny, Dylan Guthro and Steve MacDougall.
