The Nicholas James Band from Ct was formed the summer of 2010, when brother’s Nicholas (eighteen) and Lucas (sixteen) James decided to add a bassist to their indie rock sound. Nicholas had started as a solo acoustic performer at sixteen, and began to be booked into many of the indie music venues in the lower eastside of NYC. He began as a pianist but taught himself guitar so he would have an easier time getting booked into clubs. Even though only in his teens it was his voice that was his calling card. People began to compare his sound to the likes of, Ray Lamontagne, Jeff Buckley, and even Johnny Cash. Late in 2009, while home from college he decided to enlist his younger brother Lucas, a drummer, to join him on stage for an upcoming show at Sullivan Hall. The show was amazing and the Nicholas James Brother Band was formed. After playing around as a duo Nicholas & Lucas enlisted Craigslist to find a local bassist. They found Kevin Clymer a great bassist, a college student, and at twenty the oldest of the trio. The chemistry was obvious from the first jam session. They played their first official gig at Arlene’s Grocery as “The Nicholas James Band”. Their style is eclectic & cool. They are indie pop, rock, blues and everything in between.

The tracks on Lights On are filled by James’ voice and his guitar, but the layers developed between the two leave nothing to be missed. Primarily acoustic, Nicholas James can be likened to the stark, yet emotive style of singer/songwriters like Damien Rice or Jeff Buckley. Seamlessly, James manages to captivate through lyrical parallels of love and loss, which are expressed equally through the vocals and guitar.
“The Burning Room” is the opening track, which offers a barren and serene melody that ebbs and flows from the temperate to the impassioned. “There She Goes” begins with a menacing guitar riff that leads into a beautiful melody, reminiscent of a stripped-down version of early Dave Matthews. “See You Soon” replaces the guitar with gentle piano and sparse drum beats behind a saddened melody, sung in the spirit of Van Morrison, with illusions to the moon, distance, and time. “Sundays Best” is the last song on the EP, and it is the most upbeat track of the bunch, led by a peppy piano riff, and jazzy guitar that carry the song’s easy-listening feel out with luster.
Nicholas James is an impressive solo artist that is worth the listen, if you’re interested in uncomplicated, honest artistry.
