Biography

Richard Henderson: Roots re-interpreted.

Over the past few years, there has been a dramatic resurgence in roots music and many players have taken up the acoustic lap steel guitar. There are, however, remarkably few solo lap steel guitarists. Richard Henderson is one of those few. The result is unique and compelling: old standards take on a new, vibrant and distinctive interpretation and original material is, well, even more original. Attesting to that, Richard was named Instrumentalist of the Year at the 2010 Durham Region Music Awards, was invited to showcase at the 2011 International Blues Summit in Toronto and at the 2011 Ontario Council of Folk Festivals in Niagara Falls with The Toronto Blues Society, and was named as the First Runner Up in the Toronto Blues Society's 2011 Talent Search. Richard has developed a characteristic edgy style based on the traditions of the blues, country and rock ‘n roll. The music is uncluttered and elemental- driven by the sound of steel sliding on string. And it rocks!

The acoustic lap steel guitar is an interesting and uncommon instrument, particularly when played with only vocal accompaniment. It was first developed in Hawaii in the 19th century and was the direct ancestor of both the dobro, played in traditional Americana music, and the pedal steel guitar. It was also instrumental in the development of the slide guitar blues styles played in the southern United States beginning in the early part of the 20th century. Richard's performances give a unique perspective on the convergence of the historical development and the continuing evolution of acoustic roots music.

Richard’s first solo CD, “Seventh Day: Acoustic Lap Steel Guitar”, has aired on over 60 radio stations in Canada and Europe and has received critical acclaim here at home and overseas (see "Press"). "Seventh Day" documents the evolution of the traditional blues folk form from the 20th century into the 21st, all rather unconventionally adapted for the acoustic lap steel guitar. On "Seventh Day", gospel, country blues, the Chicago blues of the 1950s and its metamorphosis into early rock ‘n roll, all come under intense interpretive scrutiny, all thematically threaded together with a handful of original songs. The result, while evocative of blues and folk traditions, is transformational; leading to new and vibrant reconsiderations of traditional music.

Depending on the circumstances and the venue, Richard performs as a solo artist, or as a two- or up to a five-piece band.

Have steel. Will travel.

Instrumentation

Richard Henderson plays 6 string acoustic Kona and Weissenborn guitars.

Discography

"Seventh Day", a 15 song CD featuring original material and a mix of vintage blues and rock 'n roll, was released in January, 2010. Selected tracks from "Seventh Day" can be found on the Audio page. The CD highlights Richard’s solo work, although he does get a little help from his friends: on the track "Seventh Day" he is joined by Suzie Vinnick (the 2009 and 2010 Maple Blues Award winner for Best Female Vocalist) and Carlos del Junco (the 2009 Maple Blues Award winner for Best Harmonica Player). Carlos can also be heard on "I'm Ready".

"Seventh Day" has aired on over 60 radio stations in Canada and Europe and has received critical acclaim here at home and overseas (see "Press").
