Biography

Born in Houston,Texas, in 2008, Runaway Sun released their eponymous debut EP that year, garnering their first appearance at an unofficial SXSW 2009 showcase alongside Diane Birch. Their first full-length album, The Bridge, was recorded in a blistering eight hours at Houston’s legendary SugarHill Studios. Its success led to opening slots for Heartless Bastards, Matt & Kim, UK blues-rock powerhouse Back Door Slam, and an appearance at the “Live at Best Buy” Union Square concert series in Manhattan. The band was nominated for “Best Blues Group” in the 2009 and 2010 Houston Press Music Awards; and in 2011, lead singer and songwriter Andrew Karnavas opened for Trombone Shorty and MyNameIsJohnMichael at the PBS SXSW showcase.

  There's a languid viscosity to Runaway Sun's sound, and it pours out thick and strong on the Houston four-piece's debut album, The Bridge. Some of that comes from the tendency toward mid-tempo songs, but the real topper is the interplay of Andrew Karnavas's vocals and Daniel de Luna's lead guitar lines. Karnavas's approach is laid-back and conversational, occasionally bearing an almost beat-poet cadence. For de Luna's part, his leads are sinuous and agile, with legato phrasing lending a smoothness to even his most acrobatic passages. Many of his parts are reminiscent of Robert Quine and Richard Lloyd's work with power-pop prince Matthew Sweet, particularly in the way they effortlessly weld elements of blues, pop, country and rock into a cohesive, arresting sound. Runaway Sun manages to do the same throughout the album, also finding time to inject a bit of playfulness in the way genres are mixed and played off one another. Most striking is the one-two punch that starts the album, with the dark, grungy blues of "Bad Bad Man" played off the bright punch of "Lovebite," whose rhythm guitar and rim-shot drumming cheekily allude to Chris Isaak's "Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing."

  Whether he's transmitting info about his band Runaway Sun, his solo work, the oldies lounge project ...Whether he's transmitting info about his band Runaway Sun, his solo work, the oldies lounge project Bang Bang Boom or his burgeoning new children's music venture, AndyRoo, musician Andrew Karnavas has cultivated his brand better than most anyone else, in the music business or otherwise. His feed is a dizzying list of links to all of his endeavors, but he doesn't let it turn into a nonstop commercial, which is the problem with most self-promoting souls in Houston. He lets you into his world, not letting you forget that at heart he's a twentysomething guy in love with music and his city.

The place is packed right now, and guitarist Daniel de Luna is absolutely killing it. People are literally hooting and hollering. I always thought that was just a figure of speech.
  6:20 p.m.: Runaway Sun is playing a song from its new album (we believe) called "Bridge." It's fantastic. It feels a lot like Echo and the Bunnymen's Doors cover "People Are Strange." If Keifer Sutherland walks in, we are so bolting. Yes, you just got hit with an obscure Lost Boys reference, baby. That's how well these guys are playing.
  6:30 p.m.: On account of the sheen of vocalist/guitarist Andrew Karnavas and lead guitarist de Luna, a lot of people are going to sleep on the drummer, but he just might be the spine of the band.
  6:37 p.m.: Karnavas is going into fits on stage. He'd like to stomp a hole in the floor, it seems. Solid, solid stuff. We say this without fear: by this time next year, Runaway Sun will be one of the city's best bands.

  Each week, usually on Wednesdays - the music awards has thrown everything off this week - Rocks Off ...Each week, usually on Wednesdays - the music awards has thrown everything off this week - Rocks Off arbitrarily appoints one lucky local performer or group "Artist of the Week," bestowing upon them all the fame and grandeur such a lofty title implies.This past week, we received (and listened to) a significant amount of dope bands and performers for, so thanks for that. We also received a decent amount of shitty submissions as well, which we heartily made fun of before deleting, so thanks for that as well.
  One guy stood above the rest, though. This week, we're totally digging singer-songwriter and near-med student Andrew Karnavas.
