Biography

Stripes and Lines has been a band of good fortune so far!

We have had the opportunity to play marquee rooms such as The El Rey Theater and The Wiltern in Los Angeles, where we were part of the Live Nation HD Concert Series.

Our 45-minute Wiltern performance, captured in HD by more than 15 cameras, has been chosen for inclusion in the worldwide launch of the new iTunes Live Nation Concert Series, which drops on November 24, 2009.

In addition to the buzz happening in Los Angeles, we have quickly risen to the upper crust of the San Diego music scene, becoming the top grossing local act at one of the best rooms in town, The Belly Up Tavern, regularly selling out this 600+ capacity venue.

Our influences are widespread, focusing on artists with great musical depth, from Pink Floyd to CAN to Slint.

What sets Stripes and Lines apart is an edge which most indie bands lack today. We play with both aggression and finesse. If we feel like it's been done before we try our best to do it differently.

We strive to work harder, longer and smarter than the rest of the music world, while maintaining a very distinct sound all our own.

  When Stripes and Lines performs Sunday at Fiesta del Sol, a two-day Solana Beach fair expected to draw a crowd of more than 20,000, it will experience the privilege of premium exposure.
  
  This year, the booking team from the Belly Up Tavern provided the event's entertainment, which includes headliners The Romantics, (known for the song “What I Like About You”), The English Beat and new bands such as Stripes and Lines. “We've booked them in four shows at the Belly Up since last June,” said Chad Waldorf, the club's talent buyer. “Stripes and Lines work hard to promote themselves and they are well-tied to the community. We wanted to include the group in Fiesta del Sol because it's a good way to get them in front of a larger audience.”
  
  Now in its 29th year, Fiesta del Sol is known for its beach location, an international food court, a beer garden, arts and crafts vendors and children's activities. But it also has a reputation for helping up-and-coming-groups get greater success.
  
  San Diego's Grand Ole Party was one of the buzz bands at the fiesta last year. This year, the group played the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, which featured more than 100 bands, before heading out on a national tour.
  
  Though Stripes and Lines has only performed a handful of gigs, the indie rockers packed the 600-person capacity Belly Up Tavern a few months ago on a bill that included Escalera and Todd Hannigan.
  
  Made up of former members from the bands Government Grown and Yovee, Stripes and Lines have an instant relationship with locals.
  
  “We all grew up in North County and we have a lot of buddies, but that only goes so far,” said lead vocalist Jeremy Moss. “The band is doing well in its infancy because the quality of music is there.”
  
  A self-titled EP, released last February, includes Moss on drums, guitarist Anthony Sanudo, Evan Polselli on keyboards and bassist Harley Orion.
  
  Three-and four-part harmonies create an identifiable sound, but the instrumentation references elements of classic rock, punk, metal and blues. Moss said that when he spins the band's new EP for industry executives, they can't classify it. That's a good thing.
  
  “The labels created a genre system to make it easy for retailers to sell product,” said Moss. “But now that music is accessible without distribution from a major label, you don't need to sound like anything else. Some of us teach for a living and everyone is well-rehearsed in the fundamental bands that have crossed a threshold.”
  
  One cut that crosses the threshold is “Blackout,” a tribute to the pitfalls of a party lifestyle that begins as a dramatic ballad, then speeds up with a catchy chorus.
  
  “I strive for that contrast,” Moss said. “I like it when the music is upbeat but the lyrics are dark.”
  
  A tongue-in-cheek approach was taken with “Size Matters,” a song Moss said lyrically parallels the challenges of succeeding with sexual performance.
  
  “People make the sexual connection,” Moss explained. “But on the deeper level, the song isn't about the physical – it's an ego thing. I find that some of the upper executives in the industry didn't have to work very hard to get where they are in life, while some of the most talented people are up against financial hardship because they don't have the capital to realize their dreams.”
