Biography

Founded in 2009 in their college dorm room at John Carroll University in Cleveland, OH, the duo BEDROC (“Mike Brown" and "ML") planned out exactly how they wanted to progress in today's competitive music industry. Promoting their music via social media has helped BEDROC generate 9,000+ fans to their Facebook page and 8,000+ Twitter followers. BEDROC has since teamed with in-house producer and musical director, Steve Basil (Berklee School of Music, Boston, MA) who has produced the majority of BEDROC’s music as well as formed a powerful live band to back the duos performances.

BEDROC's 2011 Spring tour was named after their sophomore mixtape "Bored of Education". The tour included shows at St. John Fisher College in Rochester, Keuka College, Brockport College, University of Richmond, University of New England. The duo landed opening slots for Sean Garrett and sold out shows with Mac Miller, Sam Adams, Chiddy Bang, Mike Posner, Machine Gun Kelly and Wale.

In 2012 BEDROC went National booking shows around the country including Florida Gulf Coast University with Wiz Khalifa (April), Rochester Institute of Technology with B.o.B (April), Simpson College in Iowa (October), Kentucky State with 2 Chainz (October) and Rochester, New York with Asher Roth (November).

2013 has brought a debut album "Dreams High" (Top 50 Hip-Hop Albums on iTunes on the first day), followed by the 2013 Dreams High Tour (22 shows and counting), 2 showcase sets at SXSW 2013 in Austin, TX, and the shows are still flowing in. BEDROC is a force to be reckoned with in the year 2013. Reaching over 9,000 Facebook fans and 5,000 Twitter followers, BEDROC's fan base has been steadily growing since their entrance into the music industry.

  The members of local hip-hop act BEDROC are feeling the pressure. After years of tinkering with elec...The members of local hip-hop act BEDROC are feeling the pressure. After years of tinkering with electronic beats and catchy rhymes, Spencerport natives Marcel McCollough, Mike Brownyard and Steve Basil, all 19, say they've finally reached the point at which a career in music isn't just a dream, it's an attainable goal.
  
  "I feel the pressure, but in a good way," says Brownyard, as he prepares for BEDROC's first headlining show at The Club at Water Street on Friday, Nov. 27.
  
  Aspiring rappers Brownyard (aka emcee Mike Brown) and McCollough (aka ML) started the group during their freshman year at Spencerport High School, bringing in classmate and beatmaker Basil when they were all seniors. BEDROC's sound has never fallen neatly into a music category. It combines clever hooks and McCollough's smooth R&B vocals with electronic beats, making for a unique mix that's part 3OH!3, part Gym Class Heroes and with a touch of soul.
  
  The members spent most of 2008 and early 2009 performing in front of small, local hip-hop crowds. However, this past August they caught a break when BEDROC was added as an opening act for The Hoodies' highly anticipated CD-release show at Water Street Music Hall. Not only was the trio able to draw around 200 of its own fans, but the gig opened BEDROC up to Rochester's active pop-rock scene.
  
  "That was our first time proving that we could actually deliver with tickets and fans," says McCollough. "It inspired us to grind at it and work at it more and more."
  
  Taking rough demos they'd recorded in Basil's attic, the members spent the next few months refining their songs at GFI Studios in Webster. Among the results are the catchy single "Rock That Body" and the bass-heavy "Terrible." Both tracks are available on iTunes and showcase BEDROC's knack for crafting diverse pop music that's tailor-made for today's Top 40 radio.
  
  "We want to get the point where if a label asks for one song and, if they don't like it, we can show them we're capable of going in different directions,'" says Brownyard. "I don't think there's too many hip-hop acts that can say that."
  
  Unfortunately, BEDROC's creative productivity has a taken a hit as of late. While McCollough and Basil attend school locally at Monroe Community College, Brownyard goes to John Carroll University in Cleveland. Because of the distance, the members are only able to hit the studio during school breaks. Still, McCollough says BEDROC hopes to release an EP by mid 2010, while playing as many shows as possible leading up to then.
  
  "We're not deep rooted in Rochester as a household name yet," he says. "Playing at spots like Water Street is a big thing for me. We feel the love we get from fans and we love giving that back."

  BEDROC is a duo that hails from Rochester, formed in 2006 by friends Michael Brownyard ("Mike Brown"...BEDROC is a duo that hails from Rochester, formed in 2006 by friends Michael Brownyard ("Mike Brown") and Marcel McCollough ("ML"). Through the group's constant touring it has been able to establish a fan base not only in upstate New York, but also down south in Georgia and Florida, as well as out west in Arizona and California. The duo offers up solid flows and two distinct voices that really complement each other. BEDROC plays melodic, fun, well-crafted r&b/hip-hop songs that are slickly produced, and really show off Mike and ML's songwriting abilities. It's the little flourishes, like a flute here, or an insanely catchy synth line, that grab your attention and really elevate this group above the mediocrity that typifies radio playlists these days.

Emcees Marcel McCollough and Mike Brownyard are known for remixing songs like Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" or changing Snoop Dogg's "I Wanna Rock" to "I Wanna Rap." However, Bedroc's recent single "All Black Everything" shows that the Rochester outfit has elevated its original material to new heights.
  
  Using a sample of Jay-Z's "Run This Town," McCollough and Brownyard spit tongue-and-cheek rhymes about their love of darker things. Brownyard opens with, "I got a black everything; the whole studio's black," before proclaiming, "I make funeral clothes ill." McCollough follows up with rhymes about his "Malcolm X frames" and "making hits, Willie Mays."
  
  The key to the track, however, is the production. New York City's Evan Brown of E-Note Inc. simplifies things with a catchy beat and chorus that loops a distorted version of Jay-Z's words "All black everything" over and over. You'd think it would get repetitive, but even after 10 listens, the song still sounds fresh. "All Black Everything" is the first single from Bedroc's new mixtape, Bored of Education.
