Biography

Hailing from the Classic City, Mama's Love is a five-piece rock band that's as youthful and energetic as the town where it resides. Drawing on classic rock influences, the band combines creative arrangements with soulful riffs to produce music that is pure rock 'n roll. Since the bands reformation in the Summer of 2009 the musical chemistry has progressed to new levels. Mama’s Love has built a substantial body of original work in just three years, attracting fans from many age groups to its polished live performances. The band's commitment to song-writing shows in its first full-length album, Willow Street Sessions (2007). Willow Street's 12 original tunes show the musical creativity of the band and its song writing capabilities. The more mature second generation of Mama's Love songs, showcased now on tour, delve deeper in musical complexity and lyrical meaning. Fans are anticipating the release of the band’s second full length album to be recorded by John Keane in February of 2011!
The band has played at such festivals as: Spud Drive-In (July ’10, opening for the Rhythm Devils), Music on the Mountain Top (Boone, August ’10), Echo Project (Atlanta, Oct. ‘07), Trinumeral Festival (NC, August ’08), Buffalo Creek (Virginia, May ‘09) and Hoopee Jam (May ‘09) and has been featured at some of the East Coast’s best clubs (Smith’s Olde Bar, Georgia Theatre - RIP, The Pour House, Howlin’Wolf, Arlene’s Grocery, Double Door Inn). Close proximity to venues and fellow musicians, as well as classes in the University of Georgia's Music Business Program, have fostered an environment for the band to grow its ability, as well as fan base.
The Love has been spreading all over the greater Southeast. This past summer the band went on its first national-scale tour. Cities included: Raleigh, Washington DC, New York City (Arlene's Grocery), Philadelphia, Chicago, Madison, Iowa City, Jackson Hole, Driggs (support for The Rhythm Devils featuring Keller Williams), Denver, Boulder, Montgomery and Atlanta. Mama’s Love plans on building on its consistent fanbase from NY to TX and keep the momentum that they are gaining, to step up to the next level and become a nationally touring act.

  The Classic City jam-band’s previous material includes percussion rave-ups (“Faces on Fire”) and Widespread Panic stunt-doubles (“Wake Up Woes”). Their ode to a fictitious bluesman, “Long Willie Jackson,” sounds like a Steely Dan re-write of “The Ballad of Curtis Lowe.”
  
  Mama’s Love had wanted to work with Tom Tapley again. He produced their self-titled 2010 EP at Southern Tracks Studio. The Atlanta facility’s past clients include Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam, with Tapley working as an assistant engineer for producer-to-the-stars Brendan O’Brien on those sessions.
  
  “Walking in there, it’s a hallway of platinum and gold records,” singer/guitarist Thomas Galloway, 23, says of Southern Tracks. “It definitely sets the tone right when you walk in. I’m sure a bunch of the vocals were done in the same room as the Boss’.”
  
  Mama’s Love also includes William Boyd (keyboards), Whit Murray (guitar), Bo Nicholson (bass) and Ben Torbert (drums). Since working with the band, Tapley recorded Sugarland’s 2010 No.1 LP “The Incredible Machine.” It significantly raised his profile. And his rate.
  
  Still, Galloway notes Keane, known for his work with R.E.M., Widespread and Uncle Tupelo, “is a really good name to have on your album.”

  Judging by the stout, part blues/ part jazz guitar riffs, monster organ and layered harmony vocals heard on the recording, put together at Atlanta’s famed Southern Tracks Studio, one can assume that the Mama’s boys share Homer Simpson’s belief that “rock achieved perfection in 1974.” Tracks like “Wake Up Woes,” “Busted & Blinded” and “Son of a Blind Dog” pay homage to that bygone time of such longhaired, hook-infused Southern rockers as Little Feat, the original Allman Bros. and the Marshall Tucker Band.
  
  That’s no knock against the group, though. Even if most of its membership was not even born when that style was gaining steam in and outside the Southeast, the group never fails to do it up right, here. From the sawdust floor shuffle of “Texas Truckstop Boogie” to the secret weapon of keyboard man William Boyd to some serious hooks that catch your attention within the first few seconds, Mama’s Love proves its affection for unadulterated, hairy-chested rock and roll while adding a few new steps to the playbook, too.

Lead/rhythm vocalist Thomas Galloway adds electricity to what would be yet another band recycling ’70s funk music, by threading in some ’80s and ’90s rock vocals. Splicing electric guitar chords and rock vocals within a mostly funk set is what separates these men from the boys – it’s all about reinventing old influences. The youthful quintet from Athens, Ga., started making noise in 2006 under the alias Funkward Bound. Our typical set consists of 2 sets and generally an Encore (or very short 3rd set) that consists of 1-3 songs. Our sets can last anywhere from an hour and fifteen minutes to two hours depending on how many we play and the time slot we have.
We also have a vast array of covers and play 2 on average per show.
We cover several different bands:
The Grateful Dead, Little Feat, The Guess Who, Talking Heads, Stevie Wonder, The Allman Brothers Band, The Beatles, Cream, The Who, ZZ Top, The Doors, The Band and many more.
