Biography
The two core members of ReGael were raised on Celtic music. Mark Crampsie of Northern Ireland grew up listening to, and soon performing, a rich tapestry of Irish and Scottish music. Glen MacNeil of Cape Breton traces his musical roots, as do most folks from Canada's east coast, to the same deep well of Celtic tradition. Percussionist BJ Laub joined the band in 2009 to fill out ReGael's sound and bring some added vocals and instrumentation.
Songs and melodies from both sides of the big pond were a staple for them as they grew up, and developed individually their love for Celtic, and Folk-based musical material. For years, Glen and Mark crossed each others paths at various festivals and pub performances. From the first gig they played as a duo, they realized that the differences in their vocal stylings, as well as the diversity of instruments and influences each brought to the table, gave them a unique musical blend. Both men are capable of powerful lead vocals, and both have a very strong understanding of, and love for harmony vocals. Between them they play Guitar, Mandolin, Octave Mandolin, Bass, Bodhran and conventional Drums, Flute, Whistles, Harmonica, Tenor Banjo, and 5-String Banjo. This wide selection of sound options gives them the unique ability to treat every song with a fresh approach, resulting in a show that's extremely rich and varied. And when they put down all the instruments and sing a cappella, be prepared to learn a few words and sing along - it's a rule at a ReGael show!
ReGael has a combined 50+ years of experience in both Celtic and Folk music traditions, but their love of song writing and new original material is leading them to discover and develop their own sound, their own style.
ReGael has recently added percussionist BJ Laub.
