Biography
Arizona Lily is a two-girl, two-guy alternative rock band best described as neo-psychedelic gypsy rock. Often compared to Jefferson Airplane and Florence + The Machine, Arizona Lily has a truly unique take on the four-piece rock band format. With influences as wide ranging as Heart, Radiohead, Kate Bush, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Led Zeppelin, what is evident is a shared love of art-rock music of all genres and eras that Arizona Lily's members express in their song arrangements.
Fronted by the inimitable singer, rhythm guitarist and principal songwriter Rhonda Murdoch, Arizona Lily's songs explore the chasm between sex and death vs. humanity and our environment. Many years of honing her craft have resulted in a fine-tuning of pop-hook sensibilities rife with layers of chaos hidden in the order. Her lyric abstractions mesh with sweeping vocals that range from whispers to wails, all of which are equally emotion-inducing for her audience.
Jessica Dzupina-Ward provides a unique anchor to Arizona Lily, with a melodic, lyrical approach to bass playing, yet still heavy on groove. Her power backup vocals act as a seamless second voice to Rhonda, while on occasion coming forward to introduce a new colour into their tonal palate. Jessica also brings an audio engineering background and a finely tuned ear for sonics,
Mike Field adds a texture and richness through his effected lead guitar work, the backbone of Arizona Lily's neo-psychedelic soundscape. Beyond this, he brings the distorted heaviness required for the more straight-up pop-punk songs in Arizona Lily's repertoire. A veteran of the Toronto indie scene, Mike played in hard-rock band Twelfth Hour as well as his own solo projects.
Luis "Dirtymex" Figueroa completes the Arizona Lily equation with explosive and detailed drum work. Filling in every nook and cranny with his well crafted beats, he has the skill to nuance a song with a laser-guided precision.
Arizona Lily is unforgettable and utterly timeless.
