The 2nd Annual Dilla Day Detroit was a tremendous success. With thousands of attendees from around the country, Dilla Day was all about the music. A performance from Clear Soul Forces warmed up the house followed by Frank n Dank, the duo with whom Dilla made some of his greatest music. A mystical jazz performance by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson highlighted preceeded DJ sets from Houseshoes and DJ Spinna, both friends of the legendary producer. Royce Da 5’9? then took the stage performing “Let’s Grow,” a classic collaboration he created with Dilla for Lyricist Lounge. The headliner of the night was Talib Kweli who performed an amazing set with live instrumentation.
While the music was amazing, the vibe made the night even better. Dozens of Detroit hip-hop artists were in the room and the feeling was like a family reunion. Dilla Day 2013 was about family, the collective hip-hop family that has spawned some of Detroit’s most successful artists. Ms. Maureen Yancey best known as Dilla’s Ma Dukes and Big Proof’s mother, Sherallene “Mama P” Holton, were both recognized for their continued work in Detroit hip-hop after the loss of their sons, who were friends, within two months of each other.
Ms. Yancey cared for her son at the end of his life in 2006 and then later publicly battled for control of his estate and the ability to pay his enormous medical bills. It was clear, by the happy glow on her face that things have finally begun to turn for the better. With the launch of Yancey Media Group and The J. Dilla Foundation, Ms. Yancey is able to support great Detroit hip-hop like that showcased on “The Rebirth of Detroit,” last year and “The Lost Scrolls” this year. She is also able to encourage arts among the youth of Detroit, the day after the Dilla Day show featured a beat-making session with young people at 5e Gallery, an independently owned art gallery in the city.
With the continued support of the hip-hop and philanthropic community, Dilla Day Detroit has the potential to be one of hip-hop’s first official holidays.

It should have been the story of an amazing rap group… I should be writing about the incredible deftness with which, the quartet known as, CLEAR SOUL FORCES (CSF) delivers music. The punctuality of their terse verses, the rhythm that rattles in their throats and the total, utter death of feeling, the sense of bereavement that accompanies the end of each of their songs.
I should tell about the boisterous attention CSF pays to their beat selections, they are religious devotees, spiritual seekers; eagerly praying to the sometimes soulful, sometimes jarring, always intense (even when quiet) instrumental background they play over. Their vocal styling is as different as each of the four personalities that make CSF, but it is also a singular FORCE. One reckless and resilient vibration; a resolute twine of four separate and hypnotizing strings wound together to deliver a CLEAR thread, colorful and full of SOUL, power and a new idea of music.
They don't know… KEEP IT MOVIN!
It's Clear Soul… KEEP IT MOVIN!
Toe to Toe… KEEP IT MOVIN!
This story should be about four young black men. It should explain why there is a stress about them being "young","black", "men" and "young black men". If this was their story it would explain the importance of their youth. Youth is an idea. An idea conceived or confirmed by appearance; people recognize youth by what they see, and if you met CSF you would know immediately that they are nothing if not the embodiment of youth.
JUST KEEP IT MOVING… KEEP IT MOVIN! (Aaah)
Their skin is clear, with some of the disappearing blemishes that were around from a distant pre-youth. Their bodies are strong as they aggressively gesticulate; pushing arms and hands through the air, bopping their heads violently to a relentless beat, pivoting about their hips, with a gymnast's tension, as they dip down and up, as they create this wave of energy some might call dancing, but those who know bother not to call it anything. Their minds are sharp… really focused. The sharpness of their youthful minds is apparent in the synchronicity of everything that distributes their thoughts; their voices, bodies and eyes. All of their person respond to the logistics of delivering each word, so a thoughtful verse like "my favorite color is 'murder' backwards" is pronounced with a confidence that is more statement than entreaty. It is enunciated in a manner that supposes you know; that implies explanation is unnecessary because the truth is evident. They jerk, physically, when they deliver that line. It is a physicality that sweeps over the entire group (even though it is but one of them making the statement). Their eyes are fierce, a power contained but ready to explode, holding the gaze of the rawness of their music.
If this was their story then it would mention their youth in terms of all the above, but in terms that are ultimately confining.
GOLD DIGGERS… KEEP IT MOVIN!
Law Officials… KEEP IT MOVIN!
Non-believers … KEEP IT MOVIN!
Baby mommas … KEEP IT MOVIN!
They are after all not just "young", they are also "black" and "men". All three words combine immediately to foster an idea that would limit most people to a particular description of who CSF is. Then all might be lost and comparisons become forced. "Oh! That shit is like slum village!" or "that dude sounds just like jay-z" or some other reference that helps in conversation but takes away from the experience of actually enjoying CSF for what these brothers are.
This then is not the story of CLEAR SOUL FORCES, it is my story. It is the story of me trying desperately to use words to describe a feeling that was translated by four amazing musicians who bottled up their emotions in a jar named "music" and broke it over my spirit. I was squatting trying to put the pieces together, all the while doing a poor job attempting to re-master the magic I heard.
Below is the poor attempt; a warning to fools who try to describe the indescribable.

The dynamic of Detroit hip-hop is forever changing and beloved worldwide while never being held in one particular box. Coming from this deep culture is a four man collective known as Clear Soul Forces consisting of member L.A.Z., E-fave, J-Roc, and Ilajide. Recently, Clear Soul Forces, who's sound is as influenced by the gritty streets of Detroit as much as seminal hip-hop groups like Black Moon or Souls Of Mischief, released their debut full length album Detroit Revolution(s) and have become the subject of Red Bull Soundstage's Sound & Vision Web documentaries.
The Soundstage is a platform created by Red Bell to create innovative ways to help emerging young artists gain recognition through the music industry and take their careers to new levels. Clear Soul Forces is the second episode in the Sound & Vision series, after the debut last month with JEFF the Brotherhood, and showcases the crew in their natural environments within Detroit.
The Sound & Vision documentary with Clear Soul Forces takes an ambitious look into the passions that these four guys have and how hip-hop has helped them get past environmental, societal, and personal obstacles. While this is the story of the members of Clear Soul Forces, the realities portrayed are definitely felt throughout the city of Detroit. Even if you are not from Detroit, this isn't a piece that is made to show how hopeless Detroit is, but more like that even in the roughest times, there still are options available for you to persevere.
The documentary has a guest appearance by legendary Detroit hip-hop emcee Royce Da 5'9" outside the famed Saint Andrews Hall where he gives the group some encouraging words about their musical passions.
Even in this highly saturated music scene worldwide, its still a great time to be an independent music artist. If you can present yourself right with an honest sentiment for the art, you will eventually shine. Clear Soul Forces is a young group of guys with a world of experiences living in Detroit. With quality live performances and an impressive debut album with Detroit Revolution(s), Clear Soul Forces have the start to something really great for them and our cherished music culture. Give the Sound & Vision documentary a watch, and tell me if you can't relate or aren't moved at some point or another, but I doubt it.

The Detroit based collective are back and this time with a full length LP, Detroit Revolution(s).
The album is incredibly well made, all the beats are punchy with well chopped samples and intricately constructed melodies. Featuring instrumentals from Ilajide, Kankick and Nameless, it stays varied while maintaining a solid overall vibe with a classic hip hop sound. Everyone involved gives a strong performance on the mic with polished and individual styles, all of which revolve around a high level of lyricism. Each track has a lot of energy and it doesn’t drop off abruptly at any point, they all merge together to create a dope hyped vibe.
I really enjoyed Detroit Revolution(s), its one of the better albums I’ve heard from any independent artist(s) in a while. You can listen to and download the full album on bandcamp for free (or name your price).

Here is a dope new project from Detroit group Clear Soul Forces that I caught on 2dopeboyz the other day (via Justice Equality Supreme). Available for full stream and purchase below (name your price).
As it turns out, originally the four members of CSE, Wimpy, J-Roc, E-Fav and Ilajade (producer/emcee) had no plans of becoming a group, and had just all pitched in on studio time one night at a local studio in the D.
It just so happened that Royce Nickel Nine himself was going to be at the same studio that night, and the four got a chance to have an all night rhyme session with the Detroit vet. When he heard them spit together, he noticed the contrasting styles, and he highly advised they form a four man “supergroup” of sorts, something Royce is pretty familiar with. All I have to say is thank you thank you thank you Mr. 5’9, the energy and skill the four emcees bring to each track is infectious and undeniable.
Detroit Revolution is yet another reason why the D has been, still is, and probably always will be one my favorite cities in Hip Hop. From Danny Brown to Black Milk to Apollo Brown to Quelle Chris to Dopehead to vets like Elzhi, T3, Guilty Simpson or Royce (and I’m just scratching the surface) Detroit is on the top of it’s game, and Clear Soul Forces show the younger generation is doing the same. Also included below is the video for one of the tracks, “Get No Better.”

Held in Williamsburg, Brooklyn’s Public Assembly, the venue played host to a few emerging acts competing for the chance to open New York City’s largest Hip-Hop festival. With Brooklyn Bodega and PNC Radio’s own DJ Run P, on the 1's and 2's, the night started off on the right note. Spinning rap classics as the crowd filled the floor, everyone was in for a musical treat. Hosted by The Company Man, also from Brooklyn Bodega & PNC Radio, everyone was eager to see what these MC’s had to show and prove. The competitors even mingled with the fans and with each other before hitting the stage.
J-Essential, an MC from Brooklyn by way of New Hampshire opened the show with his enthusiastic stage presence. He easily warmed up to the crowd, getting them involved in his songs early on in his set. Performing a couple songs from his latest project, Speaker Medicine 2, J-Essential rocked the stage and even performed a new track that was produced by Ski Beatz. Overall, his performance had the crowd’s heads bobbin’ with every drum kick and lyrical punch line. Next up was Hip-Hop group, Clear Soul Forces. Comprised of four MC’s, all hailing from Detroit, the group gave a very animated performance. They showcased a few tracks from their Departure EP, which embodied a familiar aggressive sound we are all familiar with. Their lyricism was also up to par with their high level of energy they displayed throughout their set. Even joining the crowd on the floor, New Yorkers got a taste of what these Detroit MC’s had to offer. They rocked the stage with a variety of microphone gimmicks, dances, catchy hooks and witty bars. Last to compete, Mike Twice, from East Atlanta, hit the stage; representing the other side of the southern Hip-Hop spectrum. Twice’s set, was comprised of both mellow and hard-knocking beats that highlighted and complimented his lyricism. Making sure to finish the night off right, he radiated confidence on the mic with every rhyme and song.
And it would not have been a real Hip-Hop showcase and competition if there wasn’t a cipher. After all performed, each act came together on the stage, relaying and bouncing rhymes off each other, embracing their love for Hip-Hop. This was definitely a great thing to witness; unity in Hip-Hop amongst new artists, despite the fact that they were essentially competing against each other. As the competition came to a close, Mister Man of Da Bush Babies, also made a surprise appearance. After co-signing all the artists who performed for the night, he brought up J-Essential to the stage, for a joint performance.
Overall, the night was everything Hip-Hop in Brooklyn on a weeknight (or any night at that) should be; talent, skill, and respect for the music, each other and the fans.
It will be exciting to see who the Brooklyn Bodega staff will choose as the winner in the coming week. Stay tuned in for the announcement on www.BrooklynBodega.com! And get ready for the next Show & Prove on May 19th and June 23rd.
UPDATE: Brooklyn Bodega is proud to announce the Round 1 winner of the 2011 Show And Prove series….CLEAR SOUL FORCES!
Congratulations to Clear Soul Forces and and get ready for the next rounds of Show & Prove on May 19th and June 23rd back at Williamsburg, Brooklyn’s, Public Assembly.

Stories about bands forming are usually similar—uninteresting, irrelevant and typically offer the sa...Stories about bands forming are usually similar—uninteresting, irrelevant and typically offer the same amount of excitement as hearing about how your parents met at a cotillion in the ’50s. But in the case of hip-hop group Clear Soul Forces, its story is one that demonstrates the power of four minds behind the music coming together. After the members met while playing various live shows as solo artists, Jarrel (Wimp), Emile (E-Fav), Jared (J Roc) and Kortez (Ilajide) all decided to put some money together to record in a studio around their hometown Detroit. In the studio that day was Detroit’s own Royce Da 5’9? who pointed out each the four lyricists’ strong points and their overall cohesiveness as a single group, a compliment none of them had planned for. Then and there, Clear Soul Forces was born.
Clear Soul Forces claims the group’s name is self explanatory. “Clear because we try to be transparent with what we say and do in our rhymes, Soul because we put as much soul in our music as possible, and Forces because we are aggressive with how we are in our songs, and on stage. All that together is what were about,” says the band via email. With Ilajide as the in-house producer, every track the group releases consists of mesmerizing beats, providing the perfect canvas to showcase the distinct personalities of each member through hard rhymes and powerful lyrics. CSF draws influence from all ends of the hip-hop spectrum, listing Outkast, 3 6 Mafia, Jay-Z, Little Brother, Black Milk and even Incubus in its bio.
In addition to Ilajide’s beat making, Clear Soul Forces’ determination to constantly evolve its sound frequently leads to bringing in outside producers. The message is clear and CSF’s music stands behind it. “There are still young MCs that have respect for hip-hop culture. And that good original music is still out there and very present in the hip-hop community.” CSF is definitely out to prove both of these statements and gaining a lot of recognition in the process. The group’s third project The Forces With You will be out this summer. Meanwhile, CSF has been keeping us busy with new exclusive content on its website, doing its best to keep up with the exponential growth of the group’s fan base.

Clear Soul Forces (CSF), a young Hip-Hop quartet from Detroit, Michigan aims to make music that appeals to various demographics and bring light to the fun side of hip-hop. Comprised of four talented big dreamers with a knack for converting feeling and thought into sound via hip-hop music, CSF is undoubtedly more than just four men rhyming words over beats. Neither member’s lyrical style is alike, which makes for the range of talent to be outrageous when all four share a stage.
Performing at local shows in the Detroit Metro area, CSF strives to turn their dream of mainstream success into reality. In 2010, their focus is to establish connections, book performances and garner media coverage in efforts to create a buzz around their music and ultimately obtain a record deal. Taking the initiative to establish their creditability, presence and craft their niche in the hip-hop community, CSF released their mix tape titled Clear Soul Radio, hosted by DJ Mo Beatz, which features only CSF members. The debut mix-tape is a perfect balance of strictly hard rhymes, mesmerizing beats, humorous skits, and laid back tracks. Clear Soul Radio perfectly displays how every member has a unique factor and distinct personality that compliments the nature of the group. Enclosed you will find the introduction to what sets CSF apart from the rest.
A talented four man hip-hop group with a dream to spread good music globally can summarize CSF. The uniquely
different members came across each other while performing in local shows at a bar in Metro Detroit. After rocking out at various shows together Jarrel (Wimpy), Emile (E-Fav), Jared (J Roc), and Kortez (Ilajide) decided to put their small change together to record in a studio around Detroit. To their surprise, Detroit’s own Royce Da 5’9 would be in the same studio. Royce was impressed by the vitality and talent of the young men and he posed the idea of becoming a group. Thus, Clear Soul Forces was born.

"These dudes go hard.. Michigan’s Clear Soul Forces. I’ve seen these dudes perform at last month’s The Air Up There. They throw on quite the show as well. Production is on point, CSF just might have the best ear for beats I’ve heard from around the city. I’m looking forward to see what type of songs they make in the future. Check out this 6 track EP entitled Departure. "

Coming from a city like Detroit, one always has dreams of getting away. It’s not because we don’t appreciate our upbringing, it’s because we realize very early on that the world is bigger than just the Motor City. That’s what “The Departure” is all about. It’s a thematic EP that celebrates our exodus from Detroit into the world as artists. As you listen, you are musically taken from the bouncy nighttime streets of L.A. on “Red Light,” to the video game inspired surroundings of Tokyo’s Shibuya District on “Pick Up The Sticks,” back along the smooth ocean battered shores of Miami’s South Beach strip. But the journey is different for each person, so take a listen and just go… Come to the A3C and catch Clear Soul Forces Thursday 10/07 performing at 8:30pm on the JakPrints stage at the Masquerade."

Got put on these guys by a friend and there was no going back from there. Just pure feel good soulful hip-hop…with a real upbeat quick sound. Something new, which is always good. Be SURE to check this one out if you are a hip-hop head and be on the lookout for more from CSF in the future. "

This EP wastes absolutely NO time and starts beating you over the head out the gate! This four man group works together very well. They manage to not get in each other's way which some Hip-Hop duos can't even do successfully. Ill rhymes and cadences along with production from HudMo, NAMELESS, Jay Norm, and more make for a very nice little project. Stay up on these guys as I'm sure more bangere will be coming very soon! "
