Biography
To hear the music of singer-songwriter Stassia is to enter a world rich with drama, romance, and intrigue. Her music will fire your soul. Picture a Russian Eartha Kitt influenced by Hip Hop and Brooklyn underground music scene and you will have an idea of Stassia’s music. Stassia is an immensely talented singer who can interpret a song lyric with a maturity that defies her young age. She is a fount of creative energy and gets involved in every aspect of her musical presentation -- from the time the first lyrics are written until the music reaches the ears of the listener.
Stassia was born in Moscow, capital of Russia, to a family of professional actors. She spent her childhood backstage watching her parents act and sing night after night for adoring audiences. It was there that Stassia was introduced to the world of romantic music, brilliant costumes, and high drama. As a teenager in Toronto, Stassia fell in love with the music of great American songstresses such as Mariah Carey, Barbara Streisand, and Aretha Franklin. Stassia has taken those lessons to heart and this is reflected in the strength of her songs.
Stassia’s vocal training began in Canada where she studied with eminent vocal teacher Bill Vincent (EMI, Mama Mia, Phantom of the Opera). In New York she worked with producers Peter Lord and Jeffrey Smith (Tamia, Macy Gray) on her first EP, "Russian Roulette" and developed further by studying with vocal coach and producer Danny Maden, who has worked with the likes of Mariah Carey and N Sync. Stassia’s talents have been impossible to ignore and she has be coveted by the best collaborators.
Stassia currently splits her time between playing in New York City with her working-band (featuring pianist, singer, and musical director Akie Bermiss of Aabaraki) and recording a new EP called "Midnight Fairytale" with producer/artist Silver Roland (Nina Sky, Estelle, Lil' Wayne) in Toronto.
Stassia defies simplistic description but words like "siren", "sexy", and "seductive" hit very close to the mark. Where ever she goes, Stassia remains true to the music as a means to reach people wherever they are and make a difference.
