"Stolen from the radio"

Don’t let the ridiculousness of the video throw you off – that track is awesome! Taking it one notch higher than the standard brand of music that often emanates from this city, Our Friend & the Spiders have put together a solid rock record that retains originality whilst being pretty radio-friendly. The record in question, Walk Me Out, is covered in mass appeal without being cheesy or boring. Even better than that, it’s available for cheap: You can buy this record for 5$! And for all you beautiful bilingual readers, there’s a french track on there, too, and it’s great. Possibly my favourite cut from the record, actually.

Keep on rockin’!

Our Friend and The Spiders

The second they went on stage I thought to myself “Ok! This band definitely knows the meaning of rock and surely knows how to rock it on stage”!

They started out with really fast paced guitars with a more retro-rock sound. If you closed your eyes you could definitely hear the influences from Nirvana, Pearl Jam and even U2. The catchy voice of the singer with all his band surrounding him made the crowd go up and down, even the fans who were there to support other bands! ... If you’re a fan of Brand New, Arcade Fire or just rock in general, you should definitely check them out.

"Music Emissions"

June 21, 2014

If you, like me, are a big of 1990s music, you will love this album. It feels like it could have come out in the early 90s for sure. Things like The Cure, Sonic Youth and Smashing Pumpkins are the main influences I hear. This is a great set.
The 1990s sounds present on the opener Your Ghost work really well. This is very much like The Cure and other acts like that. It s full of energy and class. Wait is a real powerhouse. It s one of my favorite songs of the set. That whole 90s rock thing is all over this, but this one is just more successful¬ that the first one was unsuccessful. This just raises the bar.
The next song is entitled Let's Celebrate. Even harder rocking than the one that preceded it, that Cure sound is merged with a bit of grunge. They drop it to something more melodic mid-track, though. This is almost punky at times. It s also a real highlight.
I love some of the hooks on Escape. It still has a lot of that Cure sound, but also brings more straightahead hard rock into it. Some parts of the title song sound so much like The Cure that it s scary. Still, there are other things here, too.
Rawk out! Useless Words comes in really heavy, feeling a lot like awesome 90s music like The Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth. They power Ma Bulle out with more of that Sonic Youth kind of energy and power. It s one of the best songs here without question. Black Shadow is something different. There is more of a modern pop rock element to this, but still blended with that Cure 1990s sound. I like it quite a bit, but it s not the best thing here.
The first part of a two-fer, Giant Hand has a modern progressive rock angle, mixed with that Cure sound. The vocals are a bit different than those on some of the other songs. The other half of the two-fer, guitar solos all over Giant End and it really does a great job to take the album out in style.
I am a big fan of this band now, and this set. It s a great release that pleases my ear for retro 90s music while also bringing a fresh touch to it. This is classy.

PRESS REVIEWS.

The latest of the Canadian indie-band Our Friend and The Spiders is a successful representation of the kind of music most post-punk-rock bands of the day try to achieve.

Montreal four-piece of noise makers, steeping their sound in vintage reverb, haunting fuzz, and catchy rhythms. Think Radiohead when they favoured guitars instead of electronics. - NXNE 2013 Festival.

Im always interested in discovering new talent from my own city, and from the first few seconds of Our Friend & The Spiders song Your Ghost, I was completely hooked.

"One of the best bands in Quebec in my opinion, holy hell are they fantastic. They play indie-rock that has the familiar Montreal/Quebec sound but does things with fuzzy guitars that you rarely if ever hear from the region."
