Biography

The Hypo Twins - Down and dirty, lean and hungry, the band, whose nucleus is singer/guitarist Michael Loy and lead guitarist Jimi Johnson, is raw, primal rock and roll.

“We are all about fighting mediocrity,” says Loy, “fighting the bullshit.” Adds Johnson: “We’re trying to bring back the undeniable feeling of rock and roll, because it’s been diluted. This is a band that plays music as if its life depended on it, because for these guys it does.

“He was pretty shy and reserved at first, but once he came out of his shell, it was like opening Pandora’s Box” Johnson says. “My first impression of Jimi was ‘Wow, this guy has a big mouth.’ He’s like the guy in The Wizard of Oz, just talking and not giving a shit.”

In a classic case of opposites attract, Johnson and Loy quickly discovered they shared a desire to bring authenticity back to rock and roll. When their respective bands broke up, the pair decided to strike out on their own. In 2008 they recruited bassist Matt Brunsvold and the line-up was complete.

And how do they want people to feel when they hear the music? “I want people to feel loose,” Loy says. Let's get back to some basics. We want to make everyone act kind of crazy, but to know why they're doing it.”

  On the band's MySpace page, The Hypo Twins eloquently describe their particular brand of rock as "disco party scum rock." If that gem of information doesn't inspire you to give their music a listen, I'm not sure what will. Not to mention that the band's description is not too far off the mark. The Scottsdale-based trio (lead singer Michael Loy, guitarist Jimi Johnson, and bassist Matt Brunsvold) are prototypical rock stars, in both image and music. Their songs are loud, fast, and heavy on guitars. What more could you ask for from a rock 'n' roll group? The group has built themselves a small but loyal fan base locally and nationally, thanks in large part to its loud, high-energy shows. The Hypo Twins have become something like regulars at the legendary L.A. music venue The Viper Room, where the band fits in quite nicely.   On June 21st the Hypo Twins will release their first single to the Alternative Radio Format. Start...On June 21st the Hypo Twins will release their first single to the Alternative Radio Format. Starting with a 6 week campaign at Specialty Radio and following up on July 24th with a full on Commercial Release. With the help of their Home Town Radio KEXX, X 103.9 leading the way the Hypo Twins hope to make an impact at Alternative with no label in tow. The Hypo Twins EP will be available on I-tunes July 16th.
