Biography
Peter Joynt – a musician, producer and mc from Ottawa, Canada. The Joynt has been rhyming for over a decade, having developed a distinctively strong style and flow. His writing is smart and largely conscious, while his music reflects tones of underground hip-hop. He is known for an energized live performance and spits with a passion often unseen in the world of hip-hop. One intriguing fact about Peter is that he stutters quite noticeably in conversation, yet it disappears on the track. It’s one of the many interesting characteristics that make him a force to watch in Canadian Hip-Hop.
Peter graduated from Carleton University in 2004, where he completed an arts degree in Economics. While at university, he met fellow MC, Kamal McLaughlin. Together they started up the rap group”Capcity,” bringing to life The Joynt’s passion for words and rhythm. Peter produced all of group’s tracks, playing live instruments (drums, bass, guitar, and keys) that were recorded on a 4-track.
The Joynt got his musical start playing drums in various bands throughout high school. He played several shows, and appeared on the “Tom Green Show,” which aired nationwide. Over the years, he picked up other instruments, taught himself, and began experimenting with sounds, song writing, and various genres of music.
Peter eventually stepped out from behind the drum set to grab the mic and delve into the world of hip-hop. He released his first solo hip-hop EP “Unassisted” in 2005. The release featured all his own beats made with live instruments, layered through a digital 4-track. He did it the old fashioned way too - no looping, straight 5 minute takes. It made for some long recording sessions. But it helped hone his skills in performing and recording.
The Joynt followed that up with the full length album “Capcity Dweller” in 2006. The CD received local radio play, and prompted some live performances. The buzz had begun. Following the full length release was another EP – “Art,” which was released in 2008. The Joynt continued to perform live and received radio play in Eastern Canada.
His most noteworthy release to date is “Rhymestate,” a mixtape released in November 2009. The release party received some local press, and was hyped on CBC Radio 1. The album has prompted radio interviews, rotation on CBC, and continues to create buzz.
The Joynt hasn’t stopped there. He continues to make music, and push boundaries with songs like his latest singles “Capcity,” released in November 2011 (produced by The Joynt himself), which got him nationwide media attention when the video was posted on youtube. It seems he is just starting to scratch the surface of his lyrical and production talent. Be sure to keep your eyes out for this MC on the rise.
