Before the turn of the millennium -- during those heady days of dot-com millionaires and soaring stock markets -- Gentleman Joe Cooper and Phil DeVille met while touring with JFK Jr.'s favorite swing band, Bellevue Cadillac.

Joe captivated audiences with his rich, soulful baritone and larger-than-life stage presence. Phil tore the house down on keys, drawing upon years of experience performing with legends like Freddy Fender, Little Anthony, The Shirelles, The Crystals, and Junior Walker. They met. They clicked. And they made the music swing...

Headlining at Windows on the World atop the World Trade Center, they were the highest band in Manhattan. Performing for festival crowds of 20,000, they earned standing ovations and rave reviews from the national music press. You remember: Martinis and cigars. Cadillac SUVs. Bigger was better. And we all thought it would last forever.

Then everything came crashing down. We were left wondering what was real and what was illusion.

So here we are. Not since 1929 has there been such a dramatic reversal of fortune. But what was real then is real now: Folks are stripping down to basics, trying their best to get by. Rent parties are back.

People are hungry for some good old-fashioned entertainment. Even the Three Stooges are rumored to be headed back to the big screen.

When you peel away all the glitzy trappings of an indulgent age, what still matters is the music. A blues-belting crooner and a boogie-woogie piano man fit these times like a well-worn pair of shoes.

No fancy electronics. No lip-syncing posers. Two seasoned cats and a piano. As real as it gets. Coming to a rent party near you.
