Biography
Since their formation almost 8 years ago, Tupelo Honey has rapidly risen as one of Canada's top rock acts. The band's roots were formed when the members all attended Grant MacEwan College's music program. Shortly after forming in 2004, the band's talent was quickly recognized at a local talent show and Tupelo Honey was asked to perform at the famous Stage 13 outdoor festival, headlined that year by Nickelback and Our Lady Peace.
In 2005 the band won a prestigious national songwriting award - the first time a band west of Toronto had ever won the award, raised many eyebrows in the music industry. Despite receiving much interest from record labels, Tupelo Honey has stayed an independent act, realizing that the traditional record-label-route was in massive transition given music downloading was now a modern-day reality.
The group was invited to join the roster of mammoth booking agent the Agency Group (Toronto), which has lead to a string of performances that would leave any Canadian rock fan awe-struck. Tupelo Honey has earned performances alongside countless acclaimed rock stars including: Default, Theory of a Deadman, Bif Naked, Three Days Grace, Thornley, The Trews, Billy Talent, and Sam Roberts - a veritable who’s-who of Canadian rock. They were even asked to play with a few big American acts including Papa Roach, Shinedown, and - yes - even the one and only Bon Jovi for two shows at Rexall Place in Edmonton and The Saddledome in Calgary to over 13,000 screaming fans per night.
The last few years have continued at a dizzying pace for the band. They've played coast-to-coast shows across Canada. They also recently toured through Los Angeles, including a show at the world-famous "Whisky a Go-Go".
The 2011 release “Caught Up In The Excess” debuted at #4 on the Canadian iTunes rock charts only a few places behind the Foo Fighters. The second single from the ‘Caught Up In The Excess, (Pull Me Closer) charted in the top 40 on active rock radio.
At the inaugural Edmonton Music Awards earlier this year, the group was nominated for 6 awards (more than any other artist), and subsequently walked away with two of the top prizes: Rock Album of the Year, and Album of the Year.
Tupelo Honey's accomplishments and appearances haven't been limited to the stage. Their music was chosen for appearances in a Grey Cup advertisement for Travel Alberta, an episode of iconic TV show "Degrassi: the next generation", and recently in an advertisement for billion-dollar juicemaker Sunkist (who aired the ad during the 2012 Billboard Music Awards).
Furthermore, the band has had four music videos appear on Much Music, and they've had multiple top-50 songs on the Canadian rock charts. Not to mention (literally) millions of views of their videos on YouTube. And if you've been at an Edmonton Oilers game during the end of 2012, you likely heard Tupelo Honey's song "Can't Stop", which was chosen by the Edmonton Journal as the newspaper's official hockey rock-anthem.
