Biography

Halley Elwell is an award-winning songwriter and jazz vocalist originally from Hallowell, Maine. She graduated with honors from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz and African American Studies, where she had the great privilege of studying with Dr. Catherine Jensen-Hole and NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan at the Umass-affiliated Jazz in July Summer Music program. While there, she debuted one of her first original songs, 'Nobody Bothers Me', which received accolades from the likes of Jordan, Geri Allen and John Blake. The song went on to win the ASCAP Young Jazz Composer award in 2011. Since moving to San Francisco in late 2007, Elwell has studied privately with the noted recording artist and educator Kitty Margolis and attended Madeline Eastman's Voiceshop (both are founders of indie jazz label Mad-Kat Records). With the support of these two mentors Elwell's performances have soared, exhibiting depth, precision and an unforgettable spark.

In addition to sharing her unique and soulful interpretations of the Great American songbook with enthusiastic Bay Area audiences, Elwell has enjoyed recording with such California jazz luminaries as pianist Larry Dunlap and most recently, Thelonious Monk Institute alum, saxophonist Dayna Stephens. Elwell’s first album, a mix of reinvented jazz standards and eclectic original jazz compositions, debuted in 2011.
