Daphne Lee Martin

Genre: Folk
Secondary Genre: Cabaret New London, Connecticut USA Contact

Moxie takes Daphne’s beloved traditional southern roots sounds and runs them through megaphones, mellotron, a very old tube amp, a swamp and a dark alley or two. As always, the lyrics are fermented and distilled in a bathtub full of misfit Interbellum prose.

Artist Information

Biography

Where the first record was decidedly Americana, garnering us CT Music Awards Best Country Artist of 2012, Moxie is a darker, edgier foray into Indie Electronica.

Think:
Portishead, Phantogram, Metric, Mazzy Star

Sounds:
The plaintive cry of tattered Dame Alley Cat, Mehitabel in Sweet & Low Down to the near Crazy Cock madness of Molotov, the piss and pop vinegar of House That Built Itself to the unabashed bedroom voice of Whiskey & Sin and Friendliest Room In Town, or the steamy summer jam Belly, this record swaggers through the seamy underbelly of the red light district with a cast of wrecked lovers and ingenues.

Produced by Bill Readey at Fuzzy Rainbow Production, Moxie takes Daphne’s beloved traditional southern roots sounds and runs them through megaphones, mellotron, a very old tube amp. a swamp and a dark alley or two. As always, the lyrics are fermented and distilled in a bathtub full of misfit Interbellum prose.

Special guests on this record include Daphne’s full band Raise the Rent as well as heavy hitters John Panos (Mates of State), Matt Lindauer, Eric Stevenson (Pocket Vinyl), Milksop:Unsung, Matt Thomas (M.T.Bearington), Sam Perduta (Elison Jackson).

Reviews:
“Moxie has a whole lot of style, confidence, and just the right amount of self-conscious smirk. Warm and inviting, it duly manifests its role as the hooker with a heart of gold.” - Fabricoh Magazine

"Lemme tell you it's a badly behaved set of tracks. It's a liquored up weekend whose hangover lasts well into the work week." -Anthony Fantano, The Needle Drop

"Moxie is an altogether different affair. Less a collection of songs – more a soundtrack to a wild burlesque show. Underwater, dreamy vocals, you hear reggae beats under New Orleans horns….bossa nova…honky tonk…Gypsy and swing….all in a late-night cabaret. " -John Dankosky, NPR

“The music is a little dirty, a little dangerous but a hell of a good time.” - Chip McCabe, CT.com

”Devilishly delightful… a skip through sin city.” - Dissociative ID Blog

”Cheeky, and full of verve and swing... equal to anything Dr. John might have conjured up in his voodoo lair.” - Vincent Bator, Examiner.com

“With her strong writing style and sultry vocal delivery, Martin has you in the palm of her hand from track one.” - Troy Michael, Innocent Words

“Martin’s evocative voice hovers playfully betwixt Patsy Cline and Dinah Washington.” ~ Rick Koster
