Biography

Passionate. Honest. Raw. Emotional. Incisive. Powerful.

All of these words have been used to describe the music and performance of singer-songwriter and award-winning artist Emmett Williams. His energetic live shows have entertained people throughout the United States and Europe. As Peter Cooper of the Nashville Tennessean describes, “Emmett Williams is a gentle, unassuming guy, but he’s got some strange quirks: he professes equal appreciation for punk rock and country music, he won’t perform sitting down, and he is completely incapable of performing at less than impassioned levels of emotion.”

On February 8, 2011, Emmett will release “They Understand Gravity”...a cd that continues his habit of writing intimate yet intoxicating songs about the intricacies of the human spirit. From “Tuesday Morning” to “Answers to Everything” to “Floating”, Emmett explores everyday life with a poignancy uncommon in most songwriting. Added to this are covers of Bruce Springsteen and REM that fit perfectly with Emmett’s intense, eclectic and compelling original songs.

Originally from St. Louis, Emmett cut his musical teeth playing in bands during stops in Philadelphia, New York, Istanbul and London. While his influences run the musical spectrum of punk, funk, rock, and country, he found his calling as a folksinger. But he has yet to be pigeonholed into any musical category. As David Browne from Entertainment Weekly states, “Emmett Williams is a singer-songwriter, but that’s where the cliché’s end.”

Emmett also refuses to stick to one artistic medium. Besides releasing his third record, he is also a documentary filmmaker, exhibited photographer, and multimedia artist.

Whichever way Emmett decides to tells his stories, it is promised that his audience will be both entertained and inspired. As Lisa Bornstein of the Rocky Mountain News said, “In every Emmett Williams song, there's a quality that reaches out, grabs the listener and lets go only on the last note.
