MINGO JUNCTION Rose Angelica said she knows her singing ability didn't earn her the attention of a famous Nashville producer but her songwriting did.
Angelica is best known to local residents as a gifted musician and teacher as well as the chairman and organizer of the annual Dean Martin Festival.
She said it's a bit of a fluke she's been signed to a two-year contract with a major Nashville label, but it's not always about the look or the singing ability in Nashville, it's all about the songs.
That faith in her songs and a little bit of luck has landed Angelica a contract with Nashville-based Lamon Records, a new, four-song EP recorded in Music City U.S.A. and a crew from the label coming to Steubenville to the Spot Bar Friday to shoot a video for Angelica's "Girls Just Want to Drink Beer," the first single off the EP.
"I'm asking anyone who wants to come to be in the video be at the Spot Bar by 8 p.m. Friday," said Angelica, adding the more, the merrier, and the video eventually will be broadcast on the Country Music Television cable network.
"Nashville producer Dave Moody will be here with his crew Thursday and Friday, and they are going to shoot the video Friday," she said.
"The CD will be released nationally July 19," Angelica continued, adding it will be available on iTunes and Amazon.com. "It was recorded at Kingswood Studios in Nashville in April."
Angelica, who has a master's degree in music education from Ohio State University, has a long history locally of being an active musician and music educator. She also said she's written music from an early age, and living in the Ohio Valley, also developed an interest in country music.
"I've been writing music since I was a kid," said Angelica. "I always liked to write, and I always liked country music."
Angelica said she put most of her performing and writing aside when she married Richard Angelica 22 years ago, but she had an interest in recording one of her songs. So Angelica went to Studio L in Weirton in 2010 and recorded "The Wish." The song eventually was a hit on Internet radio and music websites.
"That's when Dave Moody heard the song and fell in love with it," said Angelica. "He asked me if I had any more songs, and I said 'yes.' So he asked me to send him a kitchen-table recording of just me singing seven of my songs. He got it and offered me a two-year deal with the company."
Angelica said the label is marketing her as "Americana," a subset of country music that's rooted in more traditional forms such as Appalachian folk music. Americana has grown in the last few years, with independent labels cropping up specializing in releasing more traditionally-based folk styles. So are festivals catering to fans of Americana, and Angelica said she's slated to play one the largest.
"I'm going to be playing a huge show in Nashville, the Americana Music Festival, in October," she said. "I never claimed to be a singer. I've always been a trumpet player."
Angelica said her and her producer's hope is a major female country artists picks up on "Girls Just Want to Drink Beer" and record it as a kind of anthem for women.
"(Moody) thinks it could he huge if that happened," Angelica said, adding Nashville is always looking for a good song. "Everyone's looking for songs. If you are a good writer you can get your foot in the door."
One side effect of her new career will be her retirement as chairman of the Dean Martin Festival Committee. However, the festival will continue, she added.
"I'm just not going to have time to organize it with my new music career," she said, adding others will be organizing the festival. "It will go on like it always has."

New Music Collection Released from Americana Singer/Songwriter Rose Angelica
"Girls Just Wanna Drink Beer" is the title of her 4-song EP, Single and Video
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Rose AngelicaPRLog (Press Release) - Jul 18, 2011 - Americana singer/songwriter Rose Angelica is no stranger to music. Her new music collection entitled "Girls Just Wanna Drink Beer" is being released this week on Lamon Records. The 4-song EP features a sampling of the fun and wonderful tunes and lyrics this talented artist has to offer.
Though she's found her niche in acoustic-folk style songwriting, she's no novice when it comes to music. Playing in all sorts of bands since she was 12 years old, she earned a Master's degree in Music Education from Ohio State University. Then, after graduating from college, she spent the next 35 years teaching music in the Ohio Valley before landing a record deal with Lamon Records.
"Rose is a unique talent," says Dave Moody, president of the 50 year old label Lamon Records. "Her songs are so real and honest... we felt she would find an audience for the music she's singing and writing."
The 4-song EP features the title cut "Girls Just Wanna Drink Beer," a girls night out anthem that rings true in small towns and big cities all over the country. "My Man" a tongue and cheek tune that talks about older guys and their habits around the house. "Grass is Greener" is a bluegrass stomp that could be heard at any acoustic music festival on any given weekend. And "Prescription to Party" is a call to clear up a case of the blues with all the doctor orders.
The EP is being released nationwide at all online music outlets including iTunes, Amazon and many others. The single "Girls Just Wanna Drink Beer" is being released to radio on a number of broadcast servers and the video by the same title is now on YouTube.

STEUBENVILLE - Mingo Junction resident and singer/songwriter Rose Angelica claimed she knew what girls really wanted, and that led to an unexpected second career as a country music star.
Angelica penned the song "Girls Just Wanna Drink Beer" as a light-hearted spoof with a twist on the bar scene, and that song not only landed her a contract with Lamon Records of Nashville but also an unexpected career as a country music singer. Angelica has spent the past year touring and promoting her four-song EP recorded in Nashville last year.
A video for the song shot at the Spot Bar last summer led to something even more unlikely - a hit record and a new rising star on the Americana circuit. Now Angelica is returning home and celebrating after appearing at the Nashville Songwriters' Festival and the Country Music Association's Fanfair Festival.
Angelica is giving her local fans what they want in the form of a free concert, set to begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Spot Bar, 217 S. Fourth St. The concert, billed as Rose and her Friends, also will include performances by the Four Swinging Jazzbos, the Chrisagis Brothers and Lauren Mascitti.
Angelica said the event will be a laid back affair and include a barbecue and other surprises. She added it was a way for locals to watch what she does up close and personal.
"The concert is free," she said. "We're going to have a cookout, and it's going to be a mix of jazz, country and gospel."
Angelica said she's enjoyed life on the road, but she's ready for a few weeks back home.
"I've been in Nashville for the past three weeks," she said. "I performed all over town and signed a lot of autographs.
"'Girls Just Wanna Drink Beer' was my big hit and video," she continued, adding there are more songs yet to be released. "This song is doing so well we haven't released (any other songs) yet. This is just a music festival with all my pals. I want to give the valley a different taste of all kinds of different music. This also is the first anniversary of the (shooting of) the actual video for the song."
The road has been kind to Angelica, and she said she's even been opening for rock bands. She's also been labeled as "rockabilly" for the rock shows, she said.
"I played all over Florida at different festivals," she said, adding she also performs songs by her musical heroes such as Hank Williams Sr. "It's been great fun, and everyone's treated me really well, even though I'm old enough to be their mother. Everybody knows the song, and they all say to me, 'Oh - You're the one that wrote that?' Nashville received me well. I was surprised."
Angelica is known locally as a music educator and organizer of the annual Dean Martin Festival, but she said in her heart she's always wanted one thing - to be a top-notch songwriter like her idol Johnny Cash.
"I've always liked country music, and I've seen Cash many times," said Angelica. "My plan was to be a songwriter for the stars. I never dreamed I'd become a performer myself."
Angelica does all her own booking and performs with no backing tracks or a band - just herself and her acoustic guitar. Her stock has risen so fast she's even gained an endorsement deal with Dean guitars. She said performing is all about one thing - having fun.
"My whole thing is to have fun and enjoy myself," she said. "The bars love 'Girls Just Wanna Drink Beer.' It helps them because people want to order beers when I perform it. I also do a lot of older songs, too, including Hank Williams Sr. and junior. I do old country/bluegrass songs, and they eat it up. My own songs - I call them 'the songs of my life.'"
Angelica said she's most proudest of a recent gig for American troops at Fort Knox, Ky.
"I think that's the greatest show I ever played," she said, adding most of troops were home from action in Afghanistan. "They were so excited to be home and alive."
