Biography

Paper Anchors is an indie-electro-pop ensemble from Springfield, Missouri. Founded in 2010, Paper Anchors is a band that exists for nothing more than the pure and absolute love of music. It is the brainchild of members Summer Trottier and Mal Bailey, two musicians that kicked around southwest Missouri for several years before finally finding their niche in contemporary synth and electronic pop. Watch yourself though, to call Paper Anchors “pop music” is a sore mistake. Both Summer and Mal are true musicians. They work to make original, fresh, and affecting tracks that speak to their fans. When people listen to Paper Anchors’ music it is the bands intention for the listener to experience a multitude of sounds. They make music in layers - stacking notes upon melodies, rhythm upon cadence. It is a unique style of music that happens when technology and emotion, science and art come together.

Paper Anchors draws from numerous influences. Bands like Paramore, The Airborne Toxic Event, Ellie Goulding, LIGHTS, and The Postal Service have inspired the sound of this duo. They’ve recently toured throughout the Midwest. Playing venues like Record Bar in Kansas City, Knickerbockers in Lincoln, Nebraska and Mike ‘N’ Molly’s in Champaign, Illinois, while opening for renowned bands like Emery, Sent By Ravens, Icon For Hire, I Am Empire, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, and Girl In A Coma.

Jonathan James of Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin produced their latest album In Pixels, released October 13, 2012.

Drawing from a wide variety of influences, Paper Anchors aims to bring something fresh and different to the Indie music world. The goal: to create music that is cinematic, haunting, colorful and powerful. From orchestration to electric guitars, Paper Anchors' unique sound runs soul and emotion straight through your bones. These ladies are hitting the ground running with mass support from all over the U.S. and hundreds of shows under their belts from previous projects. Music literally defines Mallory and Summer's pure existence. With extreme dedication and persistence, Paper Anchors is writing, producing, and self-releasing their debut EP "Mirrors Facing Mirrors."

  Most people think that electronica can only be applied to a subculture centered on raves - that hu... Most people think that electronica can only be applied to a subculture centered on raves - that humanity and musical talent are missing from this laptop-produced medium. But it all comes down to how the participants decide to use the technology. And technology is used in a very human way in the music of Paper Anchors, a collaboration between Summer Trottier and Mal Bailey. The release of their debut EP "Mirrors Facing Mirrors," due out this month, captures their evolvement into folk rock informed by electronica, their tracks possessing an atmospheric, dreamy, ethereal outlook. Their musical tastes and influences stem from such obscure visions as Frou Frou and other projects by Imogen Heap, Lydia, Tegan and Sara, The Autumn Film, and even Coldplay. Their music is about songwriting, expressive vocals and the experimental use of odd instrumentation backed up by electronic tracks. For Paper Anchors, technology is not an attempt to compensate for musical ability. Ultimately, quality singing and composing are the things that make Paper Anchors a cut above much of the electronic music making a comeback in today's music.
  With tour dates coming up in Springfield, Joplin, Columbia, Kansas City, and Chicago to promote their EP release, Trottier and Bailey have a lot to be excited about. Their single "Squares," has already seen radio play and landed a spot on the Quiksilver Pro France 2011 surfing competition webcast.
  "I'm kind of flattered by that," says Trottier, "and now that it's up there it's kind of unreal."
  "Mirrors Facing Mirrors" will be something different from what we've heard before from Paper Anchors.
  "We kind of revamped a couple songs to make them not so depressing," says Bailey.
  "Since we've come out with 'Squares,' we're trying to go a little toward the electronic sound rather than acoustic."
  "We recorded our album at Nick Sibley's studio, so he has a gaggle of amazing instruments," says Trottier, "like this crazy signed Martin guitar that we used on our tracks. We used a lot of awesome guitars. We used a Wurlitzer and we had a huge 9-foot Steinway grand piano. We were working with Jonathan James from Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, and he has been great to work with. He makes you feel really comfortable. He's the nicest guy."
  "We were lucky enough to use most of the tracks that we play at our shows," says Bailey.
  "Recording vocals in your house is not very easy," says Trottier, "so that was mostly what we worked on in the studio. I didn't know how I was going to feel about it, honestly, because I make everyone leave my house when I do my own vocals. I won't do them in front of people, and I don't know why, because I don't care on stage. It doesn't bother me. So I was worried at first about singing in front of people at the studio, but it was actually a lot easier than what I expected. And it was nice having somebody else do all the work. I didn't have to be pressing my own buttons and recording my own stuff. I feel like I've grown as a person," she laughs. "Now I can do tracks in front of people."
  "I think we're just having fun with running with our ideas with each other," says Bailey.
  "We've worked forever on this, like a year writing, and trying to get things ready and trying to figure out how we're going to do live shows. For these last two or three months since we started playing, we've only had a handful of Springfield shows. I feel like people are starting to recognize us, and that's a really good thing. I have a really good feeling about it, and I'm enjoying everything that we're doing."

  Mirrors Facing Mirrors is a pretty good album that shows off the Paper Anchors' creative
  understanding of what real music is all about.
  
  On "I Am What I Am" the Paper Anchors give proof that this duo are not to be taken
  lightly. The heavy hitting drum beat and thrashing rock guitars give this track some
  serious attitude and make for a dramatic and cinematic sound. From the songwriting to
  the overall production of the track, this tune is a great example of why we love rock
  bands so much. The lead singer is great and the distortion effect on her vocal track
  matches the emotional pull in the music. You have to hear this song if you enjoy great
  rock songs.
  
  Other equally awesome songs include: Reverse The Repeat, Silence, and Squares.
  Each of these tracks help make Mirrors Facing Mirrors a great rock project that won't
  soon be forgotten. If you enjoy the music of bands like Flyleaf and Paramore, you'll
  enjoy Paper Anchors. I recommend this band to those who like the Alternative Pop-Rock
  genre.
