Mahadev is a world music ensemble that plays an exciting and eclectic blend of Indian, Gypsy, African, Middle Eastern and American music mixed with original compositions that bridge the gap between these worlds of music.

Biography

Mahadev lives to communicate the heart of music that exits beyond and transcends boundaries of country and genre. The members of Mahadev are highly trained musicians, composers and improvisers who also have shown great openness and sensitivity to music of various cultures and are able to evoke that organically. The members of Mahadev have studied with world-class masters and innovators of North Indian, jazz, Persian, African and Balkan music, and understand the common language that can be shared by these great musics.

Collectively, members of the band have studied or worked with Larry Koonse, Charlie Haden, Miroslav Tadic, Charlie Byrd, Christopher Parkening, Randy Gloss, Ali Akbar Khan, Aashish Khan, Barun Kumar Pal, Swapan Chaudhuri, Ravi and Anoushka Shankar, Houman Pourmedhi, Joe LaBarbera, John "Drumbo" French and the Magic Band, Wadada Leo Smith, Vinnie Golia, Chris Brubeck, and others.

Members of Mahadev have also shared stages with Galactic, Widespread Panic, The Motet, Garaj Mahal, Ike Willis, Les Claypool, Keller Williams, The Yuval Ron Ensemble, Rafe Pearlman, Fannah Fi Allah, Charlie Haden, The Magic Band, Medeski Martin and Wood, Ansamble Mastika, Jack Rose, Glenn Jones (Cul De Sac), Espers and many others.

Mahadev can perform for several hours. A typical set would touch on music from several parts of the world, and would include 50-70% original music. The set would be designed to have a balance of high energy, catchy music, balanced with the deep and profound. Throughout the set, there would be individual and group improvisation reaching to ecstatic heights and to introspective depths.

Eastern Promise – original composition based on North Indian music, combined with Blues form and Eastern European rhythms.
