Biography

Matt Ellis is an award winning Singer/Songwriter/Producer from Sydney, Australia. Based in Los Angeles, CA since 2006, Ellis is currently working on his fifth solo album, while enjoying airplay and media praise from his latest release, the double A-Side Single, “Candy/Dangers of the Night”.

Matt’s four solo albums have taken him across the United States, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong and Mexico, performing at The Sydney Opera House, Troubadour, Tucson’s Rialto Theatre, CBGBs (RIP), The Bitter End, El Mocambo, Hotel Cafe, The Satellite, Pappy & Harriets and The Annandale Hotel sharing the stages with Calexico, J.Tillman, DeVotchKa, and John Doe to name a few. Album guests have included Nels Cline, Greg Leisz and Merry Clayton, while numerous tracks have been licensed by ABC TV America, MTV, Qantas and The Food Network and received airplay on hundreds of Radio Stations around the globe. He recently became a permenant resident of the United States through the merits of his career.

Last August, Matt was hand picked to open for Kasey Chambers at KCRW’s Twilight Series on the Santa Monica Pier, where the seven piece band previewed new tracks to a crowd of 15,000 people. His new single, recorded with members of Calexico and Chessboxer (Mumford & Sons), was launched to a full house at Hollywood’s “Hotel Cafe” shortly after, and has received airplay on over 50 radio stations across the US, Australia and Europe since. “Dangers of the Night” is now a finalist in the Americana Category of the International Songwriting Competition, Matt’s sixth finalist placing in the past four years. Ellis and his band have continued to tour off the back of the single, recently performing a Sold Out show at The Troubadour in L.A. alongside White Buffalo. The band will continue to perform over Spring and Summer with festival and club dates booked throughout California, Arizona and Texas. Most recently, Matt Ellis and his band were guests of AXS Live TV, where Matt discussed his upcoming plans and performed two songs live to air from Downtowns “L.A. Live”, beaming into 40 million homes across America.

Produced by Ellis and mixed by Craig Schumacher (Neko Case, Calexico, Iron & Wine, M Ward), Mattt’s fourth full length album, “Births, Deaths & Marriages” received ISC Awards for multipul tracks and music videos in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The album features eleven Americana tracks and is arguably his best work to date. Returning guest, Greg Leisz (Joni Mitchell, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Emmylou Harris) added his haunting signature Pedal Steel, Lap Steel & Banjo to four tracks while Tim Young (Beck, Daniel Johnston) channeled the desert through his Telecaster on five. Calexico’s Nick Luca added further electric guitars, piano and Fender Rhodes while his band mate Jacob Valenzuela rounded out two songs with trumpet. Merry Clayton, best known for her vocals on The Rolling Stones hit “Gimme Shelter”, lent her incredible range to the gospel inspired track, “Ghosts”, while his wife, Vavine, joined Ellis on the foot stomping duet, “River Too Wide”.

Matt’s wife joins him in duet once again on the new single, “Candy”, out now on iTunes. This dusty version of the Iggy Pop hit features Matt’s band and guests Jon Niemann on Keys along with Matt Menefee and Ross Holmes from Chessboxer on Banjo and Fiddle. Mixed once againby Craig Schumacher, “Candy” is backed up by the original “Dangers Of The Night”, featuring Jacob Valenzuela on trumpet.

PRESS QUOTES:

“The Sydney, Australia-born songwriter trotted the globe before sinking his roots in Venice a few years ago, which has turned out to be anexcellent station for his finely honed Americana. Ellis’ 2011 album “Births, Deaths and Marriages,” his fourth full-length, came soaked in pedal steel and honesty. And the38-year-old brings both to his take on Iggy Pop’s “Candy”.
- Kevin Bronson, L.A. Buzzbands

Venice-based Aussie ex-pat Matt Ellis brings the full range of his gravelly, often angelic voice and songwriting subtleties to bear on his latest album, Births, Deaths & Marriages, a soulful and sweet tribute to the cast of characters that populate a man's life and the shared milestones that give it shape. If less overtly political than previous albums, Births... is still an intensely thoughtful study in the interconnectedness of extended family, and makes ideal material for one of Ellis' famously rousing live performances.
