Artist Information
Biography
Lily Kiara is an acoustic folk/pop singer/songwriter, who writes poetic sensory lyrics and melodies with a melancholic undertone. Daring edges between songs and poems.
Delicate and bold vulnerability.
Lily can be BOOKED solo or as a duo with Felicity Provan, or you can book the full band Songs and Poems.
SOLO/DUO: Authentic songwriting, inspired by poets and the love for unfamiliar forms. Accompanied by daring harmonics in vocals and trumpet.
BAND Songs & Poems: Songs with a bold mix of poetry and improvised music by one singer/songwriter, one poet and four innovative instrumentalists. Takes you by the hand at first, then lets you soar the winds of waging words, gentle melodies and rocking beats.
BIOGRAPHY:
After music lessons in diverse instruments, she got her first guitar at fourteen. She started writing songs almost immediately after. This gave a new swing to her poetry, which she has been writing as long as she can remember.
Her travels in the USA were inspirational to performing more with her music. She had the chance to play in different places and shared gigs, with local musicians, mostly in Seattle, often with moodblues musician jr., for who she also sang back up vocals at Bumbershoot Festival.
This was a great buzz to her music and she recorded her first cd in 2001. In 2008 her latest solo album On This Ground released on Sibyl Sings, her independent label for music and poetry. An EP, South with songs and poetry, came out in 2006.
In 2006 she started the band Songs & Poems, a melange of acoustic folk/pop, poetry and improvised music. In the band are Michael Moore (reeds, www.ramboyrecordings.com), Felicity Provan (trumpet, vocals, www.myspace.com/felicityprovan), Julyen Hamilton (poetry, www.julyenhamilton.com), Michael Vatcher (percussion, www.doek.org) and Joost Buis (trombone, lap steel guitar, www.plutones.com).
This particular bringing together of sounds and approaches has its origins in her moving to Amsterdam to dance, in 1989. During her years at the Theaterschool, these musicians were playing live in classes and they made performances together. She saw them play in many live concerts from small venues to big festivals. After several trips to the USA, which inspired her to perform more with her songs, the wish grew to play with these musicians, with this kind of exciting music. She wanted the songs to be heard in the wider context of this aliveness and the possibility of not knowing yet where they might be taken to. Her love for poetry has always made it seem natural to include poems in a concert alongside the songs.
Poets and writers are great influences on her songs; Leonard Cohen, Jorie Graham, June Jordan, Alice Walker, Jeanette Winterson. The songs sometimes come out more as poems that still clearly want to be songs and so affect the way they form themselves. Such as the song 'Fish Bread' which exists solely of single words. Lately she loves the odd tones and edges of the music of Joanna Newsom, Duke Garwood and also Syd Barrett, as well as the series of Ethiopiques and Mulatu Astatke. Among favorites are Ani DiFranco, Ane Brun, Cat Power, Laura Marling, Damien Rice, Joni Mitchell, Sigur Ros, PJ Harvey, Anais Mitchell.
Based in Amsterdam, but with a love for bringing her music to different contexts, places and people, she has played in venues and festivals in The Netherlands (Motel Mozaique, with a dance/music solo, Amsterdam Literary festival), Seattle (incl. backing vocals for local moodblues singer jr, at Bumbershoot), New York (cd presentation at The Bowery Poetry Club), Adelaide (Joiner's Arms, radio shows) and Finland among others.
…”Lily Kiara doesn’t choose the common path, which makes this album wonderful to listen to. A record that reminds of the early works of Joni Mitchell or Suzanne Vega.”… www.MusicFrom.NL (On This Ground, 2008)
