Bio

The DC Native and the Texan in Jen Hitt often get in territorial arguments, but her love for both remains strong.

Jen performs regularly in her new hometown of Austin and has a history of successful tours and house concerts on the East Coast and her hometown of Washington DC. Co-bills have included Roustabout (Josh Philpott of Missy Raines and the New Hip), Athena Radford, John Craigie, and The Blue Hit.

Through Jen's innovative "Song of the Month Club", subscribers are given a sneak peek into Jen's songwriting process and receive one brand new song per month. http://jenhitt.blogspot.com/p/support.html

In July 2013, Jen had the honor of performing the National Anthem for the Round Rock Express Baseball Club.

Jen grew up in Gaithersburg, Md., the 'burbs of DC, where she started singing in choir at the age of 4. At Rice University, she learned to sing opera and studied classical composition, and since she was in Texas, balanced school work with performing in a folk duo: playing guitar and singing with Carolyn Shulman.

After college, she worked briefly at the House of Musical Traditions in Takoma Park, Md, learning more about acoustic music, world music, and all the instruments that go along with it. She also spent several summers working as a sound engineer at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, absorbing all the traditional music the Smithsonian has to offer.

Jen received her Masters in Music from University of Miami in Media Writing and Production, where she refined her composing and film scoring skills. She started as a DJ at KTRU, Houston for 4 years and then WVUM, Miami for 2 years, then joined WAMU in 2005. Up until July 2011, Jen was the Music Content Manager (ie Program Director) for WAMU's Bluegrass Country. Currently Jen hosts the weekly radio show, Capital Americana and produces other content for the NPR affiliate, WAMU's Bluegrass Country.

Jen loves yoga, eggs, camping, in-season tomatoes, flowers in her hair, community, dreams, and cheese.
