About the Artist: This is Henriksson’s second release to date. She’s based out of Sweden but was originally born in New Jersey. She has received critical acclaim from many music critics around the globe thus far in her musical career. Her latest release “The Hearts Cry” was recently nominated for CD of the Year Indie Music Digest.
The Hearts Cry is one release that certainly doesn’t disappoint. This is one singer that brings to the table effective songwriting via a highly marketable musical delivery. This meshed with a one in a million Classical-Celtic sound and effective vocal performances makes for a very effective combination indeed.
Deborah Henriksson is just a breath away from Modern Ambient Pop or Alternative Renaissance Folk Rock but skillfully and methodically never crosses the line into the realm. All songs are wonderfully simple but masterful in their overall arrangements. Music reminded me of a cross between Maire Brennan, Azam Ali, and even The Moon and the Nightspirit. This CD is quite entertaining overall with an amazing vocal front of Henriksson who gently leads you by the hand down a breathtaking musical journey that has no comparisons. Henriksson is truly the quintessential Celtic vocalist in my mind.
The lyrical content of all 14 pieces is straight from the heart and offers a very strong and confident Celtic/European perspective and spirit. There is even a reference from Scottish poet Robert Burns in the song ”My Love is like a Red, Red Rose” so some of this goes beyond strictly a Celtic influence.
All song do exactly what they are meant to do via well-crafted movements, top tiered musicianship and an amazing Producers touch. The overall production value is superb with a crystal clear sound quality and solid low end frequency.

Conclussion
Deborah Henriksson has proven herself yet again with this latest release. She is clearly an established and popular talent around Sweden and all band members backing her up are clearly capable musicians. I must admit “The Hearts Cry” sucked me in like a powerful drug and refused to let go long after the musical experience was over. This usually indicates something special about the artist in question. Thus deserving praise, recognition and musical fame at the international level. Need I say more?

New Jersey born, Sweetish based singer-songwriter Deborah Henriksson just releases her latest CD entitled The Heart’s Cry in 2012. This is her third releases to date. Herniksson crafts vocal lines that are inseparable from the soundscapes which support them, ranging in style from Celtic to ambient to traditional and contemporary, with a scant of country.
The CD gently takes flight with “Snow” a smooth intro groove that serves up an inviting vocal presence against impressive earthy fretwork, smooth as silk rhythm section and mesmerizing vocal delivery from Henriksson. Track 2 “My Lagan Love” presents a striking, slow moving piece that serves up a methodical musical build with a passionate melodic delivery with heartfelt vocals from Henriksson that flows and ebbs its way through to emotional fruition. Track 3 “Perfect Time” delivers an hypnotic melody with impressive strings, thought provoking lyrical content and mesmerizing vocals. The production quality is impressive and the musicianship of everyone involved is clearly above the bar. Along the way you will notice an array of instrumentation with things like piano, harp, acoustic guitar, orchestral elements and ambient accents, lush harmonies all built upon an earthy rhythmic foundation. Song for song the combination of Celtic masterpieces meshed with Henriksson’s vocal presence are masterful. Now turning our attention over to Henriksson - as for her vocal abilities she is quite impressive. Her vocal style is cut from the cloth of Sara McLaughlin, Loreena McKennitt, Enja, and Celine Dion. It definitely works well within the confines of this contemporary Celtic catalogue. Henriksson’s impressive vibrato, falsetto and overall vocal passion clearly showcases a strong and confident vocal ability. I especially like how her voice just sort of flows and ebbs melodically with the music. This is an amazing quality that not many artists can execute. This X-Factor quality clearly makes Henriksson a marquee talent from Sweden. No doubt she has solid musical instincts behind the microphone. This CD from Henriksson delivers 12 compelling tracks all providing an interesting snapshot of an amazing artist with thought provoking lyrical wisdom and amazing wisdom. All piece are striking, captivating, positive, passionate and extremely compelling. From striking “Hearts Cry” to heartfelt “Ae Fond Kiss” to earthy “My Love is like a Red, Red Rose” to hypnotic “We Sprout in thy Soul” to melodic Harry’s Game” to powerful “Woman of Ireland” to mesmerizing “I Know You by Heart” to upbeat “Evangeline” this CD has something for just about everyone. The CD ends with track 14 “Sparrow Can Learn” the perfect wrap for a catalogue like this.
It’s hard to find serious weakness with this production. I give up.
I like everything about Deborah Henriksson. She's truly an infectious Celtic artist that possess a "Gold Standard" - look, sound, appeal, talent and vocal presence. From start to finish “The Hearts Cry” is an impressive collection of music. The music is warm and earthy, highly passionate, uplifting and passionate. The pin drop moments are to die for and her vocal touch is of legends. The songwriting craft is an interesting snapshot of Celtic music delivered from from a clairvoyant artist. All songs are consistent musical experiences, each one possessing a unique personality, flair and signature groove. Note for note, song for song this catalogue is extremely consistent and fills the space with what I would describe as peaceful earthy exuberance that captures the essence of the amazing Celtic spirit.

Review: So as I listened to her latest release entitled The Hearts Cry (2013) and it dawned on me that good music is a by product of a good artistic perspective. In other words if the artist has the proper perspective typically good music is the by-product. I have to say I was extremely impressed with the opening 3 tracks “Snow”, “My Lagan Love” and “Perfect Time”. They made quite the first impression with me. To be honest: I expected cheesy Singer Songwriter Pop. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, I just want to hear something new. What I discovered was actually quite the opposite of the status quo. The whole CD is full of what I would call creative acoustical earthy energy with lyrics and Celtic subject matter that dare explore unknown variables in that fascinating culture. Henrikson’s music appeals to so many different senses on so many different levels. It’s cut from the same cloth as The Head and The Heart, Ingrid Michelson. I can also hear the slight Folk-Sadcore influence in there as well like a modern-day Janis Ian, Lorena McKennett, Sara McLaughlin or Tori Amos, Stellamara, Aine Minogue and even Era. What I really like about Henriksson is there is no attempt to deliver what I call over the top pop. Cheezy music with a pretty face via top flight sampling, cookie cutter songwriting via a mix that sounds more like a commercial than a piece of music. None of that here. The music sort of slithers across the ears – it will either suck you in or turn you away. If it turns you away perhaps you don’t have the personality type for it. Perhaps fans of Flashy Pop may not like Hernikkson but let’s face it – many want something new and real. Weather it’s musically, lyrically, inspirationally, emotionally, spiritually – if you feel like music is taking us in the wrong direction than rest assured Deborah Henrikkson is taking us back in the right direction with “The Hearts Cry”.

Deborah Henrikkson will affirm your faith in music again. She represents everything art should be. Somewhere along the line I feel artists and labels got it wrong. Music is powerful art from and although I understand marketability let’s leave that stuff at the door when writing music. If we can do that this the purest art form usually steps forward. ”The Hearts Cry” presents a fascinating collection of timeless music and delivers a highly passionate 14 track catalog via top flight musicianship, amazing songwriting and music that covers all the bases: Americana, Folk, Alternative Rock and Sadcore.

“The Hearts Cry” by Deborah Henriksson (2012) has much to commend it. Admittedly, there is a whole lot of variety to these arrangements and performances. First: Henriksson and her impressive band delivers incredible playing like a well oiled machine. This is testament to hundreds of hours of rehearsal time no doubt. Second: Henriksson’s clairvoyant voice works it’s magic on you right away and is the perfect fit for this Celtic style. Henriksson has the attributes required of an effective Singer/Songwriter/Performer – but it’s clear she is a gifted vocalist. Third: Henriksson’s overall sound and amazing vocal persona are as good as it gets. All songs are a skillful combination of Celtic pop, yet with a slight Classical Orchestra aftertaste that will remind you of The Celtic Women, Capercaillie, Sarah Brightman, Hagalaz Runedance, and Irfan. Henriksson has the creativity and songwriting prowess to be extremely dangerous behind the mic. There’s also a unique quality to this catalogue that breaks the mold when compared to the mundane Celtic-Pop that’s been filling the airwaves lately. What am I trying to say – well let m start by saying there is nothing fake and superficial about Deborah Henriksson. Let me add – not every square inch is filled with musical ambience delivered under duress – but musical space this allows the music to breathe on its own and vocal passion that cannot be faked. Equally as impressive is how marketable this 10 song catalogue truly is. It covers so much ground and despite this it manages to not spread itself to thin across to many lines – nice touch. I’ve always said if you can play it a party or at a gathering, then it’s marketable. The music is extremely marketable – with a fresh Celtic Pop, Contemporary Orchestral, Singer/Songwriter sound that is passionate and entertaining. All 10 tracks will genuinely lift your spirits unlike most music you hear on the radio these days.
Top Track: My Lagan Love
Let me go on record by saying this latest release from Deborah Henriksson has no real notable weaknesses that I can hear. Her latest release “The Hearts Cry” is an endearing album limited by nothing. I would imagine in time we will hear more from this vocalist originally from New Jersey as the years unfold. Time will tell but I can honestly say this is one artist that is set up for marketable success down the road with respect to her vocal style and her elitist approach. All of this gives modern day Pop well deserved wake up call.

This goes above the typical attributes like raw talent, amazing songs, nice voice, or even a very marketable look, sound and image. There's something truly infectious at the core of these artists that simply makes us feel good when we listen to them. Whatever "it" is - they all seem to have "it".
Today I listened to the latest CD from Sweden's own Deborah Henriksson. She just released her latest CD entitled: "The Hearts Cry" in 2012. Venturing to her website I get the impression this is one Celtic artists that's extremely determined and passionate about their songwriting craft and know what it means to be a "Real" Celtic artist. From start to finish this CD delivers and is a very entertaining musical experience from beginning to end. It is full of peaceful tranquility and has a very Orchestral quality to it, and even dabbles in Pop, and Alternative Folk. Henricksson reminds me of Shirley Collins, Mary O'Dowd, Margaret Christl, Brenda Wooten, and Capercallie. Any fans of any of these artists or musical styles or bands will enjoy this latest release from Henriksson. It's clearly marketed for those who like a soothing female vocal front and playing that never lets its guard down. I get the impression Henriksson and company are letting it all hang out via this compelling 14 track line up. In other words they hits the mark remarkably well by just by being who they are musically. Favorite tracks include (Snow) and (The Hearts Cry). All songs strike the perfect balance between Soundtrack Celtic Folk and Classical. Within each one of these pieces Henriksson capture lightning in a bottle as she bares her soul and delivers what I would call pure musical mojo. It offers much in the way of compelling lyrical content. The playing from all members is spot on and just makes the whole CD even more enjoyable The overall vibe of the production is very eclectic, poetic with pockets of joy and hope shining through.
I see Deborah Henriksson as a diamond in the rough, with an amazing amount of potential. As time goes by we will no doubt hear more her. I also wouldn't be surprised to hear their music featured in a Major Motion Picture or Prime Time Documentary. In close most famous artists out there have "it" I'm not so sure what it but Deborah Henriksson has whatever "it" may be.

From New Jersey (originally) now based in Sweden comes an amazing female artist known as Deborah Henrikkson who just released her latest release “The Hearts Cry” (2013). I always listen to the opening track extremely carefully. It’s the opening track the artist has selected to hit your ears first and foremost. The opening track “Snow” sets the stage rather well for a Celtic CD like this. It was a passionate intro piece that stuck in my head and had me eager for what was ahead. All in all the whole CD is brilliantly delivered with a richly woven Celtic-Ambient-Pop textures with songs that go far deeper than the next artist. Music will remind you of Enja, Faun, Secret Garden, Moya Brennan, Mary Black, Joan Osborne and Paula Cole. To be honest I can’t say enough about Henriksson’s appeal and overall sound. Reading now from her site: The Heart’s Cry” has received fine reviews from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, and the U.S. Together with Swedish producer, arranger, and musician Mats Nyman, she has created recordings with warm vocals and haunting soundscapes which touch the listener. Deborah is presently exploring folk, Celtic, ambient, New Age, and newly composed songs. Henriksson has been called “A true musical Citizen of the world” I would agree with that statement. “The Hearts Cry” captures a very genuine sound that grabs the listener right from the get go. But be warned you may not want to listen to this CD on the day you get fired. I happen to love dark and slow moving melancholy music that doesn’t try to hard to win you over. That’s how I would describe Deborah Henriksson. Henriksson has a sound that favors many Alternative female artists in the late 90’s yet with a modern day Celtic feel. I’ve never heard an artist so skillfully combine so many genera’s into one unique sound. Weather this is by design or simply by accident it’s amazing.
The songs that stuck with me the most were “Snow” and “Prefect Time” and “Evangeline.”
If there was one word or phrase I would use to describe Deborah Henriksson it would be “true to self”. I give Henriksson high marks for being herself and just letting the chips fall where they may. This CD will simply make your day more passionate as some of the lyrical content touches on the passion of life itself. No doubt the true meaning of some of this material is buried deep between the lines, but there’s an undeniable Celtic passion beneath all this. Henrikkson is a very, very very capable singer but it’s obvious to me her primary goal as an artist is to make the world a much better place; one song at a time. If that’s sounds corny so be it. This CD spoke to me personally and inspired me on so many different levels – especially as a female listener.

The Artist I recently checked out the latest CD from Swedish vocalist Deborah Henriksson entitled The Hearts Cryreleased in 2012 (DHP Records).
The band Henriksson brings to the table many impressive session players. I would say her band possesses advanced to elite playing abilities with respect to the Celtic genera. You will find much in the way of eloquent playing styles presented along the way. Timing is spot on within the confines of this rather earthy catalog. Henriksson can do more than hold her own vocally, but more importantly she has an amazing amount of vocal finesse and doesn't over sing her parts. What's even more impressive this conservative style of music requires much in the way of vocal performance. It's how you handle the pin drop moments that reveal who you really are vocally. Having said that vocals from Henriksson executed flawlessly. This is much harder to do than it sounds and can only be done properly by the masters. The musicpossesses a classic Celtic Folk, Alternative Ambient Popish type stigma but with a Orchestral element attached. All in all great music to eat a Sunday morning brunch to, or listen to on rainy days. The music will remind you of the usual suspects: Tori Amos, Florence and the Machine and Sarah McLaughlin. I see her as a Celtic version of Celine Dion. Folks out there who enjoy all the above bands will fall head over heals over Deborah Henriksson. The songs Simply put - all songs are incredible. There’s nothing like a solid musical production to get wrapped around, and this is one of them. I kept waiting for a weak song to come down the line, and eventually gave up on that. The vibe Overall amazing vibe with powerful wisdom of love and life. The production Industry standard from start to finish. Amazing mix. The goodHonorable mentions go out to the amazing "vibe" you get from The Hearts Cry. It definitely has a unique and gripping signature sound and doesn't try to hard to win you over. When the CD was all over I wanted to do it all over again. The bad In my opinion some of the songs are shall we say overly epic, and drag on way to long. The ugly Nothing to report.
The verdict The Hearts Cry by Deborah Henriksson has everything to offer the listener. From good playing, exotic arrangements, interesting songs, amazing vocals, and music that covers a wide degree of latitude. From Alternative Pop, Ambient, Celtic to Folk and Classical. The Bottom Line Deborah Henriksson delivers a compelling 14 track catalog that will mesmerize, entertain and mystify. It's an absolute pleasure to listen to an artist like Deborah Henriksson. Just hit play, sit back, relax and see where The Hearts Cry will take you spiritually. It's an amazing mescal journey in that respect can simply transcends space and time.

Newsflash: New Jersey born Singer/Songwriter Deborah Henriksson just released her latest release entitled “The Hearts Cry” in 2012. Henriksson is now based in Sweden.
Introduction: Have you ever wondered how many Celtic vocalists does it takes to change a light bulb? The answer, in case you are wondering, is that it doesn’t matter as there will never be a shortage of singer/songwriters. Of course, being a Celtic Singer isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you are actually capable of delivering something unique and special. Actually Deborah Henriksson does exactly that.
Review: So what do artists like Qntal, Lisa Gerrard, Trobar de Morte and Enya have that Henriksson dont? Not much if you ask me save the multi million dollar promotional machines and major record label support. In this overly saturated genera/market there’s a plethora of independent artists coming out of the woodwork, armed with nothing more than a PC, a Microphone, an acoustic guitar and nothing really special to offer. They manage push their music out to the masses and much of it is substandard in nature and extremely forgetful to say the least. Henriksson smashes through the boundaries with her amazing sound and delivers invigorating music that has a deep seeded Celtic-Acoustic-Symphonic quality to it. Her band is amazing and the Production value of this latest work is beyond comparison. It’s as good as it gets for an Independent Artist. Musical overtones that will remind you of acts from Beth Nelson and Loreena McKennitt. On the other end of the sonic spectrum I can hear Caroline Lavelle and Maire Brennan. All in all a well rounded CD that has much to offer the listener.
Bottom Line: Deborah Henriksson stands out from other Celtic artists in a good way within this very saturated market. Her response is to deliver something unique with a breath of fresh air signature sound and a powerful message to call her own. The strong suit of Henrikssson is her passion and her ability to sing you a powerful piece of music. She does this via solid musicianship and thought provoking melodies that speak to the heart. One would be wise to keep a watchful eye on her over the years to come. At the end of the day Deborah Henriksson truly has something special to offer Celtic music fans all over the world. DH I want them to feel each song in their hearts – I want to TOUCH them! I want them to be moved, musically and emotionally. And I would like them to relate to the experiences about which I am singing, to feel that we all share mutual experiences.
IMD Who are some of your top musical influences?
DH I have been influenced by classical music as much as folk music. Singers like Leontyne Price, Renee Fleming, Judy Collins, Buffy Saint Marie, and Joni Mitchell influenced my vocal ideals, while groups like Ian and Silvia, Steeleye Span, and Clannad nurtured my musical ideals of presenting folk material. Thanks also go to Mozart, Verdi, Puccini and Barber!

DH Hmmm that’s a tough one! As a child I think it would be my first ballet at the New York City Ballet, The Nutcracker! As an adult? A concert by legendary soprano Maria Callas or else one by The Chieftans! All of these moved me immeasurably.
IMD Tell us a bit about your latest CD “The Hearts Cry”?
DH “The Heart’s Cry” is a wonderful mix of haunting voice and soundscapes that run through different genres – folk, Celtic, ambient, with a little scent of “happy minor”! Each song is beautifully crafted to create an experience where the instrumentation and the voice complement eachother, and bring out the best in eachother.
IMD What’s the best and worst things about being an Artist based in Sweden?
DH Living in another country is always a challenge about finding your balance – how much do you change to fit in? I have finally come to the conclusion that I am just me. The worst thing about being based in Sweden if you want to perform in the U.S. is covering your travel expenses!
IMD Can you tell us about how this amazing collection of music on “The Hearts Cry” was first conceptualized?
DH After my first two CDs I felt that my next CD should be something which brought out more of Deborah Henriksson. It was time to step forward with my individuality as a singer. I wanted songs that were, as I say on the program notes, songs that resonate with the experience of living, and that were the right range and expression for my particular instrument. So together with producer and arranger Mats Nyman, we searched for songs and Mats created soundscapes to match. Some of the songs were old friends, and some of them have been new relationships, but all of them are “me”, even if I haven’t written them myself!

IMD What’s the best thing about performing live?
DH Joining with the audience, when the sound system is just right and I am lost in the physical and emotional act of singing while communing with the other musicians.
IMD Is there a song on your latest release yours that stands out as being your personal favorite? Why?
DH Oh that is a hard question! They are ALL my favorites! They are all different sides of me, requiring different breathing and vocal demands which color each separate interpretation. I had to work the hardest to find “My Love Is Like a Red, Red Rose” so maybe that might be my personal favorite as it is so close to my heart and I learned so much from recording it!
IMD Any more touring scheduled to support? If so how long is the tour?
DH Absolutely – am working on it!
IMD What’s next for Deborah Henriksson?
DH The next step for me in my development as a singer is writing my own material. Mats composes and I have written the lyrics for songs which we are in the process of recording and arranging. A few will be released as an EP later in the spring and, together with the rest, as an album later in the fall.

'The Hearts Cry' is a hauntingly beautiful album by Deborah Henriksson, a Swedish woman who has a voice like no other and an ability to provide a heaven within her music.
The eleven track album is a wonderful mixture of contemporary folk, with a strong Celtic influence giving each track its own individual enchanting mystery. With the poetic lyricism Deborah explores the captivating truth of life, and its beauty.
This sensational album features nothing more than an articulate understanding of reality, within each song Deborah creates a sense of ease and romance. There is no doubt that Deborah Henriksson has the voice of an angel. She is an inspiration of which her talents are well presented and should be appreciated worldwide.
Snow particularly being an enjoyable song featured on the album. Its main beauty lies within the harp which accompanies Deborah's wonderful voice. Creating a sensational image of an empty valley, Deborah takes listeners to the safe and happy place within all of us. Equally as beautiful is her cover of 'Harry's Game', the contrast between both songs mentioned is fascinating, Harry's Game has a dark atmosphere, representing fear and loss.
Potentially what makes this album so memorable is the way Deborah Henriksson takes a commercial theme such as love and manipulates it into something beautiful and untangible.

Deborah Henriksson is an American native, now living in Sweden, who makes music filled with Celtic s...Deborah Henriksson is an American native, now living in Sweden, who makes music filled with Celtic sound and soul. Her songs are authentic to the point that one wonders if Henriksson’s original name was Irish. Or perhaps she was among those Vikings who shipwrecked off the coast of Donegal.
This Irish spirit is not of the boisterous Flogging Molly sort, encouraging listeners to voyage in an ocean of Guinness. Henriksson’s music is its own drug – more hypnotic than narcotic, it puts not the body, but the emotions under the influence.
With Henriksson’s voice at the forefront – a voice intimate as a coffee shop performance but world-class enough for the largest of venues – her music has been broadcasted from Scotland to Stockholm to Staten Island.
Released in May 2012, The Heart’s Cry is her third album, and it has received positive reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. She has teamed up with musician/producer Mats Nyman to create soundscapes that echo through the abstract lands of Celtic, folk and New Age.
Track 1, “Snow,” features Henriksson’s soothing but potent voice and establishes the undeniably Celtic elements of her work. Track 3, “Perfect Time,” provides a rather haunting acoustic melody.
Track 8, “Harry’s Game,” offers a mesmeric chorus, eerie and beautiful; it would make a fine sonic companion to a peaceful death with a hopeful afterlife. It is interesting that such a song would have the title “Harry’s Game”; to many familiar with the British Isles, this title would bring spine-tingling images of the IRA assassin thriller TV miniseries and novel by the same name.
The 12th and final track is an inspired cover of the Eleanor McEvoy hit “A Woman’s Heart.” Even those who aren’t so keen on Celtic music will be impressed by Henriksson’s voice, from which they might receive therapeutic benefit.

Integendeel, op ‘The Hearts Cry’ gaan ze op zoektocht naar het muzikale lansschap van de groene eilanden. Dat gebeurt met een minimalistische begeleiding, de piano van Nyman en akoestische gitaar van Bengt Andersson volstaan meestal voor fraaie uitvoeringen van smachtend balladewerk uit Ierland, zoals het overbekende ‘A Woman’s Heart’ (Eleanor McEvoy) waarmee afgesloten wordt.

Samen met haar Zweedse producer presenteert zij haar derde CD tot dusver, geheel opgenomen in Zweden, waar ze alweer geruime tijd woont en werkt. De twaalf nummers op de CD worden wonderschoon gezongen, Deborah heeft een prachtige ijle stem in de hogere regionen en ze zingt zo zuiver als een klaterend bergbeekje. De begeleiding is in Zweedse handen en is zeer ingetogen. We horen piano, keyboards, gitaar, drums/percussie en harmonica/accordeon alsmede etherische achtergrondvocalen van Deborah zelf en Kent Ihrén. Onder de liedjes treffen we enkele oude bekenden aan, zoals ‘My Lagan love’ (o.m. Das Coverbild ist eigentlich ganz einfach gehalten und hat doch ein gewisses Etwas, das neugierig macht. Schon nach den ersten paar Tönen bestätigte die Hörprobe den positiven optischen Eindruck.
Es klingt ein bisschen nach Loreena McKennitt, der erste Song "Snow" ist sogar ein Loreena-Lied und doch klingt es deutlich anders. Ein Cover? Es widerstrebt mir, hier diesen Ausdruck zu gebrauchen, denn Deborahs Version kommt mit einer ungeheuren Eigenständigkeit daher. Im direkten Vergleich wird mir schnell klar, wo die Unterschiede liegen. Deborah nimmt weg, reduziert sowohl die Instrumentierung, als auch die Dramatik des Gesangs. Ihre Interpretation zeichnet sich durch eine Klarheit und Schlichtheit aus, die dem Lied eine ganz neue Qualität verleiht. Ganz sicher ist das Geschmackssache - mir gefällt Deborahs Version besser als das Original. Wo Loreena haarscharf auf der Grenze zur Süßlichkeit entlangschliddert, verleiht die 'Frau im schwarzen Kleid' dem Werk Tiefe. Es gewinnt in meinen Ohren an Eindringlichkeit und Intensität. Die Instrumentierung ist viel sparsamer, aber sehr klug und stimmig eingesetzt. Dort, wo mein Empfinden bei McKennitt »zu viel, zu arg, zu überladen« ruft, macht sich bei Deborahs eine wohltuende Schlichtheit und Selbstverständlichkeit breit, die das Gefühl »genau so muss es sein« mit sich bringt.
"My Lagan Love" als Nummer zwei auf dieser CD ist auch keine Unbekannte – die Celtic Woman, Dusty Springfield, Kate Bush (mit neu getexteter Fassung) und noch einige andere mehr haben sich dieses irischen Traditionals bereits angenommen und die Messlatte schon recht hoch aufgelegt. Henrikssons Version ähnelt am ehesten jener der Celtic Woman, aber im Prinzip gilt auch hier das oben gesagte: Durch genau diese Sparsamkeit gewinnt das Lied – auch hier überzeugt mich Deborah. Auch bei "Perfect Time" von Clannad funktioniert Deborahs Weg. Und bei "Ae Fond Kiss", bei "I Know You By Heart" - eigentlich bei allen Songs auf diesem Album.
Für mich ist die 'Frau im schwarzen Kleid' eine echte Entdeckung. Deborah Henriksson bewegt sich in einem Bereich, in dem ich die Melodien oft sehr mag, die gängigen Interpretationen aber genauso oft als überladen empfinde.
Wer aber ist diese geheimnisvolle, mir bisher unbekannte 'Frau im schwarzen Kleid'? In New Jersey geboren, lange Zeit in Schweden ansässig hat sie sich Liedern von Loreena McKennitt, Eleanor McEvoy, Moya Brennan (Clannad) und dem schottischen Dichter Robert Burns (1759 – 1796), der die Texte für etliche Traditionals lieferte, verschrieben. In enger Zusammenarbeit mit dem schwedischen Produzenten Mats Nyman, der auf diesem Album nicht nur für Produktion und Arrangement zuständig ist, sondern auch die Tasten von Klavier und Keyboard-Passagen anschlägt, hat sie seit der Arbeit für ihr Debütalbum "Simply Gifts" (2007) ihren ganz individuellen Gesangsstil entwickelt. De in Zweden woonachtige, maar in New Jersey opgegroeide Deborah Henriksson verrast ons met een op het eerste gehoor Clannad/Enya-achtig album. Wie echter beter luistert hoort een puike verzameling traditionals en andere liederen (inderdaad ook van onder anderen Clannad) die smaakvol bijeengebracht en werkelijk prachtig ingezongen zijn met de klassiek geschoolde stem van Henriksson. Een absolute lust voor het oor dit album dat klinkt als folk light, wat het echter beslist niet is, getuige het met gevoel voor traditie vertolkte materiaal. Vooral in het oor springen de traditional My Lagan Love en A Woman’s Heart van Eleanor McEvoy.

Sångerskan Deborah Henriksson är född i USA, men sedan länge verksam i Sverige, där hon mellan varven fått stor uppmärksamhet. Det är också svenska musiker som backar henne på "The heart's cry". I denna kvintett hörs bland andra Bengt Andersson (gitarr) och Mats Nyman (piano/keyboards), som även svarar för arrangemang och produktion.
Gruppen lyfter fram en varm stämning som håller i från början till slut. På så vis blir hela albumet lätt att ta till sig. Själva tyngdpunkten ligger vid traditionella skotska sånger, men skivan rymmer också en hel del nyskrivet. Oavsett form sätter Henrikssons rena röst stor prägel på musiken. Allt klingar vackert, på rätt sida om det känslosamma.

Deborah Henriksson is a folk/celtic singer originally from New Jersey, who now lives in Sweden. Classically trained but with a passion for folk and celtic music, she brings a deep emotional intensity to her work that you may not expect. Not content to rest in a single genre, Deborah is already exploring new soundscapes as vehicles for her voice. Personally, I think her ambient music choice is a wonderful one. In fact, her voice could shine over most styles of music; however, the music must have both class and a healing energy. It must be pure in order to serve as a backbone to the very spiritual voice of this gifted woman. Deborah has been receiving “through the roof” reviews and, of course, winning well-deserved awards and recognition for her work.
“Snow” is a stunning piece that it would be difficult to imagine anyone disliking. Henriksson’s voice seems to paint a picture as it weaves in and out of the music like an angel who is half here, half in some other world, bringing back messages for our benefit. The discipline in her singing is incredible, as she elevates the mood simply by projecting such control. “My Lagan Love” starts with a warm synth, and it’s over this that Henriksson’s vocals are reminiscent somewhat of the very famous “The Wind That Shakes the Barley” rendition by the great Dead Can Dance. This sounds like a classic Celtic tale of love and devotion. Singing over such a simplistic, minimal synth works very well, as it allows the listener to take in the full emotion communicated.
“Ae Fond Kiss” is a piano piece, once again played with subtlety to accommodate the powerful vocals. Absolutely beautiful. “My Love Is like a Red, Red Rose” finds Deborah singing over a folk guitar piece, and it seems that every genre she takes on, she excels at. I would feel bad for the other entrants in both celtic and folk songwriting contests if Deborah Henrikkson had entries in each simultaneously. There would be inevitable disappointment, because this is a voice hard to compare with. On each track, Henrikkson brings a slightly different tone, and on “My Love is like a Red, Red Rose”, it’s a sweet, devotional one. “Only A Woman’s Heart” is another folk song with a more upbeat tempo and a mournful, bitter-sweet feel. Acknowledging pain and not trying to hide away from it.
Deborah Henriksson’s “The Hearts Cry” CD is a deeply moving and beautiful release and I look forward to hearing more from this gifted vocalist.

There is honesty to Henriksson’s voice that resonates through each of the tracks on The Hearts Cry. When tracks get mastered or a number of takes are used to create a single, I believe that a lot of the soul gets lost. When Henriksson’s vocals begin, one cannot help but imagine themselves in an intimate venue (a coffee shop, perhaps); what issues forth during a track like My Lagan Love extends through genre and era constraints to touch listeners.
My Lagan Love has been recorded by a tremendous number of singers running back to John McCormack’s 1910 version. Sarah McLachlan, Charlotte Church, and even Sinead O’Connor have provided listeners with their version. I believe that Henriksson’s version adds to this dialogue as it interlaces her vocals with the rest of the instrumentation. Where there seemed to be separation between the instrumental and vocal sides in the past, listeners are greeted with a unified sound. The beauty provided Robert Burns’ Ae Fond Kiss is considerable. Burns penned the poem in the 1790s, but Henriksson is able to make its subject material germane for a contemporary audience. This is due in large part to the power of Henriksson’s voice, which ensnares the hearts of listeners and fails to let them go, even after The Hearts Cry finishes.
Only A Woman’s Heart, Henriksson’s cover of Eleanor McEvoy’s post-modern classic, emphatically punctuates this effort. What originally required two singers (the aforementioned McEvoy and Mary Black) is granted additional nuance due to Henriksson’s range. Celtic music has been popular on a regular basis, but I believe that The Hearts Cry may just cement the genre to the current era. Pick this disc up today.

Working with Swedish producer MATS NYMAN, DEBORAH has crafted vocal lines that are inseparable from the soundscapes which support her beautiful renditions of songs by LOREENA McKENNITT, ELEANOR McEVOY, MOYA BRENNAN and 18th Century Scottish poet ROBERT BURNS. Drawing on a wealth of songs from the Celtic tradition, but with a dose of what she calls “happy minor,” a little scent of country, these soundscapes perfectly characterize the evolution of DEBORAH’s singing since her 2007 debut CD, SIMPLYGIFTS, which found her exploring a mix of classical art songs and folk songs. The ongoing discovery includes an adventure into another use of her voice, honing it down to its essential core. The shift in tone began when she was working on her second release SIMPLY CHRISTMAS, and she and NYMAN kept lowering the keys of songs until they found an undisturbed voice.“That,” she says, “is the voice that’s evolving in THE HEART'S CRY. All of us have prejudices. In this day and age it is to be hoped that we hold no prejudice again...
All of us have prejudices. In this day and age it is to be hoped that we hold no prejudice against people because of their race, their religion, the colour of their skin or their choice of sexual partners, but that doesn't mean we are devoid of prejudice. I stand up. I admit it. I have my prejudices. One of them is an almost instinctive dislike for the sort of tree-hugging, kaftan-wearing, leprechaun-bothering misplaced sentimentalism which passes under the assumed name of the New Age. Indeed, the very term "New Age" is likely to induce a groan in my soul.
Still, it is good to re-evaluate your prejudices every once in a while to verify if they are worth holding on to. There's no point having a prejudice if you're not going to challenge it occasionally and Deborah Henriksson's new release, The Heart's Cry, provided me with just such an opportunity. Now forgive me my prejudice, but when I read up about Ms Henriksson's work I chanced I could see, out of my window, the leprechauns running in panic for their burrows. But the written word on Ms Henriksson does not do her music justice. To avoid putting off the prejudice of fools like me, the music needs to be given a prominence over the descriptions to be found on the internet.
Let me explain. What I expected and what I got were two entirely different things. There are no bells and whistles on The Heart's Cry, no hey-nonny-no's and no hint of craic. The opening track, "Snow" begins with a gentle acoustic guitar-piano combination which immediately conjures up an image of a babbling brook. A harp, a violin and a flute (of sorts) gradually join in (or perhaps their electronic equivalents), but the effect is more like an acoustic version of the darkwave of French bands like Artesia than Clannad let alone their pseudo-Irish imitators.
Ms Henriksson's voice has an almost medieval quality to it. If Sandy Denny were alive and still making music, I can imagine her singing something like this. "My Lagan Love" conveys just such a sensation. While I can see the Celtic influence in this, it would entirely wrong to call this Celtic music except insofar as it would befit a musical accompaniment to an Arthurian romance by Chrétien de Troyes. Ms Henriksson has the voice of a modern day female troubadour and it suits her music to a tee.
There are, inevitably weak points. Few releases - very few - are devoid of them. The middle track, "Ae Fond Kiss", a piano dominated ballad is perhaps the weakest song on the EP, the one song where the theme is strained. No one these days uses the pronouns "thee" and "thou" and there is something naïve about rhyming "fancy" with "Nancy". But this is soon redeemed by what comes after. "My Love Is Like a Red, Red Rose" would not be out of place on a seventies Renaissance album, (although the recurrence of the phrase "Fare thee well" is unfortunate) while "Only a Woman's Heart" has probably the best melody and the best guitar playing on the whole EP.
Overall, the EP starts strongly and finishes well. And from my point of view, it does not confirm me in my prejudices. It may not have me converted fully, but it does not conjure up any of the images the internet-blurb would have me believe. Deborah Henriksson has produced an EP which is replete with gentle sounds, capable of creating a vivid imagery in the mind of the listener. There is more here than is first apparent and repeat listens make the EP more enjoyable by opening up new vistas. And above all, the leprechauns can rest easy.

Track 2 keeps thing moving in the Celtic direction with the passionate “My Lagan Love.” This piece presents striking intro against passionate low end feel and vocal tandems with passionate musical delivery that flows and ebbs it’s way through to emotional fruition. Track 3: “Ae Find Kiss” shows us even more musical depth from Henrriksson and company against mesmerizing piano flow agsint thought proviking lyrical content. As the CD slowly unfolds I can hear many musical textures reminiscent of classic Celtic Folk, Classical, and even Orchestral Pop reminiscent of Enja, Sara McLaughlin, and Loreena McKennitt. The musicianship of everyone involved is clearly above the bar and what you would expect from a CD like this. You will also notice lush layers musical instrumentation layered everywhere which includes exotic orchestral elements, Celtic Whistles, Piano, Guitars, Strings, Keyboards and and Synthesizer and. Zeroing in now on Henrriksson let me go on record and say she has a very appealing vibratto and timber. Her singing is highly passionate and makes the vital (artist to listener) emotional connection with her voice. Henrriksson and company execute a few pin drop moments as well clearly proving he is an artist worthy of your attention within the sonic space. This CD has something for just about everyone. This CD ends with my favorite track: “Only a Woman’s Heart” the perfect finale statement for a CD of this caliber.
It’s fair to say with just 5 tracks in the line-up this album feels more like an EP rather than a full-length release. Perhaps 4-5 more tracks are needed to make this experience more complete. The rhythm section is a bit thin and somewhat lacking. Things like a standard drum kit, Bodhran, Celtic Percussion, Timpani, Snare, Bells, Tambourine would build a more solid rhythmic foundation for the music to rest upon. Imight also add this could also be done without compromising the Orchestral feel of the music.
From start to The Hearts’ Cry. by Deborah Henrriksson is an impressive catalogue of music. All pieces are short and sweet musical experiences, each one possessing its own signature groove and musical personality to call its own. The playing abilities of everyone involved is above the bar. Last but not least the vocal presence Henrriksson is intoxicating. At the end of the day it’s a fascinating snapshot of an artist that has the courage to bare her heart to the world.
