Introduction, as this is a 4 song EP to get things into gear. And from the looks and sound of it, tempo will raise surely! Coming across as the bastard children of Muse, the mighty Pure Reason Revolution, and some other names that I am too lazy to look up right now. But what I do know is that bonus points are earned by the performance of singer Lara Mol. Here we have a girl that, while having a timbre that reminds me a bit of No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani, (in my humble opinion) is able to maximise her delivery by using every trick in the book. And her book is lengthy and she knows it by heart. Really impressive! But it is a quintet, and with 3 of the guys adding backing vocals, there is more to the band.
Judging from the people involved I am not alone in thinking this. Not only has the band been on a tight touring schedule, they also managed to pull producers Ken Stringfellow (REM, Posies) and JB Meijers (de Dijk) on board. Opvallend is daarbij dat ze dit jaar alleen maar op 23 mei optreden in Rotterdam. Kom op jongens! Je home town! Dat moet beter kunnen...

Over the past years the band has matured, developing their unique sound and lyrics. Living in Amsterdam’s red light district worked as an inspiration for lead singer Lara Mol. Lara’s fascination lead her to write songs like “Dark Side of the City,” “Cocktails” and “Barefoot.” In these songs Lara explores the different sides of the red light district. Living in the area, she realized that the red light district is not only a dark and tragic place. She discovered humor and mystery.
Staton, which is made up of Lara Mol (lead vocals), Luc Pustjens (bass), Niels Nuiver (drums), Tijn Driessen (keyboards) and Michiel Claessen (guitar), have completed the album “Mapped:Sins,” under the guiding hands of Producers, Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, R.E.M.,Big Star) and J.B Meijers (Goo Back to the Zoo, De Dijk), who also shared in mixing the album.
“Mapped:Sins,” is one of those rare albums that you can listen right through without having to skip any tracks. I’d say these are 4 absolute classics. My absolute favorite track on here is probably “Dark Side Of The City,” but not far off behind is, “Riot”. Lara just sounds so strong on these track, and the lyrics really hit you in the face. In fact, one of the great things about this album are the lyrics. There’s none of this “I love you and can’t live without you” drivel that packs most albums, but every track here has some kind of significance behind it. If you listen to the lyrics, you should be able to easily draw the links between what each song is saying and the overall picture of its simply encoded messages.
Staton manage to do what many bands before them have failed to; write contemplative, inquisitory and almost bittersweet songs to punchy rhythms and not sound ridiculous while doing it. The band’s songwriting, vocals and powerfully persuasive image will obviously do the rest to help “Mapped:Sins,” become a roaring success.
However, adding to the extraordinary flavor of this album is not only the beautiful voice that the gorgeous Lara Mol possesses, but also the eclectic nature of the songs. From power pop to rock to electronic funk, “Mapped:Sins,” is replete and an overwhelming joy to listen to from the first song to the last!
This is a band you can’t help loving. Beautiful, brilliant, thoughtful, creative and expressive, Lara Mol comes together with the other four talented band members to create an album that will knock the socks off everyone else in the genre.
“Mapped:Sins,” displays what a rock band should be able to do. It’s not just five people ranting and raving aimlessly in extreme poses, it’s five people dealing with life experiences and it’s effects. No candied apples or multi-colored rainbows for this one of a kind band, only down-to-earth experiences are expressed on Staton’s album. A must-own for anyone who loves real organic-rock music.
Staton is a great band and I can’t wait until their next full-length album comes out, I already have a copy reserved.

Lead singer Lara Mol throws in a few jazzims and R&B phrasings every now an then, but the main feel of their debut EP Mapped: Sins is pretty straightforward. Leaning heavily on the rhythm section the band sings about living in the Red Light District. Forget the romantic notion of brights lights, big city, their subject matter is the gutter where booze (Cocktails) and troubles (Dark Side of the City) reign supreme.
Stand-out track Riot is pushed forward by a Cure-inspired back beat before exploding into horror mayhem a la Holland Greco. Add heavily distorted keyboard and guitar and you end up with the themes song for a late night action packed TV series.

De poprockband Staton heeft onlangs een nieuwe EP uitgebracht: Mapped: Sins. Het unieke geluid van S...De poprockband Staton heeft onlangs een nieuwe EP uitgebracht: Mapped: Sins. Het unieke geluid van Staton is grotendeels te danken aan de zangeres van de Amsterdamse band. De zangstijl van Lara Mol zou je kunnen vergelijken met fluisteren, schreeuwen en zingen tegelijk, wat vooral in het nummer Riot goed naar voren komt. Hier gaat het genre al snel richting diepe rock, erg fijn voor de afwisseling. Als je je nu niks kan voorstellen van de sound van Staton, ga dan meteen de EP luisteren, want je mist wat!
Als je naar hun vorige album Indecisive kijkt, hoor je vooral rock, maar ook soul en funk. Er zijn niet veel bands die het met die genresamenstelling hebben gered. Misschien hoor je daarom ook minder soul en funk terug op de EP, maar wie weet komt dat nog op het album. Mapped: Sins is gemixt door Ken Strinfellow en JB Meijers; en als je dat aan hen overlaat, kan je wat verwachten. Vanaf de eerste seconden word je ingeleid aan de compleet eigen stijl, geluid en muziek van Staton.
De EP trapt af met een stevig nummer. Cocktails is een nummer met een lekker tempo waarbij je niet zal blijven zitten, als je rustig op je stoel zit te luisteren. Echte rock, dus. Gevolgd door Dark Side Of The City, een typisch popnummer met een aanstekelijke melodielijn.
Een zeer geslaagde EP dus met 4 sterke nummers erop. En ik ben benieuwd of ze nog een andere weg inslaan door erg van het poprock genre af te wijken. Complete album? Kom maar op!

Door je ep te laten mixen door JB Meijers en Ken Stringfellow pak je het groots aan. De Amsterdamse ...Door je ep te laten mixen door JB Meijers en Ken Stringfellow pak je het groots aan. De Amsterdamse band Staton is zo´n groep die dat doet. Op hun ep 'Mapped: Sins' laten ze zich vol overgave horen. Vanaf de eerste tonen wordt er meteen een lekkere sfeer neergezet. Wat beats komen zachtjes binnen en als dan ook zangeres Lara zich meldt is dit een heel aangename aanvulling. Deze zangeres met pit zorgt ervoor dat Staton straalt. Lara klinkt als een Gwen Stefani en de vergelijking met No Doubt is dan ook snel gemaakt. 'Dark Side Of The City' is hier zo'n voorbeeld van.
Het is echter te gemakkelijk om ze een kloon van deze band te noemen. Qua sound wordt de luisteraar in allerlei hoeken gezet. Wel klinkt het allemaal erg enthousiast en behoorlijk vrolijk, maar met regelmaat proeven we ook wat duisters in deze formatie. Het lijkt soms alsof het experimentele zoals we dat kennen van De Staat ook aanwezig is bij Staton. De samenzang en het opzwepende karakter in 'Cocktails' doet hier sterk aan aan denken. Zo laat Staton zich op 'Mapped: Sins' op verschillende manieren zien. Dat lukt natuurlijk alleen als de band uit goede muzikanten bestaat en dat blijkt duidelijk het geval. Zoals vaker bij een ep houdt het na vier nummers alweer op. Graag zou je nog wat meer van de groep willen horen. Het is dus weer wachten op een langspeler. Deze ep is alvast weer een mooie voorbode.

De band laat graag van zich horen, daar staat tegenover dat ze dan ook heel wat te vertellen hebben. En… Damn, ze klinken hartstikke goed!

De Amsterdamse band Staton speelde op 10 januari in Groningen twee maal live (Platosonic/Altersonic)...De Amsterdamse band Staton speelde op 10 januari in Groningen twee maal live (Platosonic/Altersonic) en presenteerde daar hun nieuwe EP: Mapped: Sins.
De EP bevat vier nummers, gebaseerd op op gebeurtenissen en sferen tijdens het antikraakwonen op de Amsterdamse Wallen van zangeres Lara. Niemand minder dan Ken Stringfellow (The Posies) en J.B. Meijers tekenen voor de productie en de mix. De nummers hebben toepasselijke titels meegekregen: Cocktails, Dark Side of the Street, Riot en Burning Man, allen verwijzend naar de ‘ plattegrond der zonden’.

Afgelopen donderdag ...Muziek geïnspireerd op belevenissen in antikraakpanden op Amsterdamse wallen
Afgelopen donderdag werd tijdens Eurosonic Noorderslag de EP Mapped:Sins van Staton gelanceerd. Naast zangeres Lara Mol bestaat de band uit Michiel Claessens op gitaar, Tijn Driessen op toetsen, Niels Nuiver op drums en Luc Pustjens op bas.
De songs zijn geïnspireerd op de gebeurtenissen en sferen die zangeres Lara opdeed tijdens het wonen in antikraakpanden op de Amsterdamse wallen. Alle muziek is dus door de band zelf geschreven en gecomponeerd, en vervolgens geproduceerd en afgemixt door Ken Stringfellow en J.B. Meijers. Ik vind het erg lekker klinken.

Begin januari presenteerde de band Staton haar debuut EP, MAPPED: Sins, in Groningen. Het minialbum ...Begin januari presenteerde de band Staton haar debuut EP, MAPPED: Sins, in Groningen. Het minialbum bevat vier songs die geïnspireerd zijn op de periode waarin zangeres Lara antikraakwoonde op de Amsterdamse wallen. Niemand minder dan JB Meijers (Carice van Houten, De Dijk, GBTTZ) en Ken Stringfellow (The Posies) namen de productie op zich. Knap werk voor een relatief onbekend bandje. Maar hoe klinkt het? Muzikaal gezien zit het allemaal snor. We horen een energieke en dansbare, licht overgeproduceerde rocksound, die makkelijk weg luistert. Het hoogtepunt van de EP is de vette single 'Cocktails'. Het zijn sterke liedjes, maar Staton mist hier en daar nog wat een eigen geluid. Het Amsterdamse vijftal doet soms zowel muzikaal als vocaal denken aan The Gossip. Al met al een spannend begin: benieuwd waar dit in de toekomst naar toe gaat.

De Nederlandse band Staton timmert al een tijdje aan de weg, maar staat nu op het punt van doorbreke...De Nederlandse band Staton timmert al een tijdje aan de weg, maar staat nu op het punt van doorbreken. Ze zijn samen met de band Mundo Park getekend voor de Horizontoer 2013. Beide bands waren ook tijdens de 2012-versie al actief tijdens Horizontoer 2012 en mochten een paar dagen meevaren. Ze maakten toen zo’n indruk op bezoekers én organisatie dat ze komende editie een week meevaren. Beide bands timmeren hard aan de weg naar bekendheid. Horizontoer geeft ze vast de vuurdoop met 5 dagen achtereen toeren en optreden. Laat je tijdens de komende Horizontoer meenemen in hun vernieuwende rock’n soul-sound en aanstekend enthousiasme.
Waar de band Staton speelt, is het trouwens gegarandeerd feest. Zo spelen ze ook tijdens Platosonic en Altersonic in Groningen 10 januari om hun EP extra promotionele aandacht te geven. De EP werd geproduceerd door Ken Stringfellow en J.B. Meijers.

With only 22 years energetic Lara Mol is already the driving force behind Staton. Taking the Netherl...With only 22 years energetic Lara Mol is already the driving force behind Staton. Taking the Netherlands by storm the five-pieced band is, according to Lara, melting “fresh nu-soul, rock, funk and a bit of Motown” into their own sizzling soul stew. Their name is a tribute to 70ies gospel- and soul queen Candi Staton and Lara is more than happy to add some new chapters to an already rich soul tradition. Although their roots lie in the soul and funk tradition of the 60ies and 70ies, Staton are not merely copying their role models, but looking for an “own” sound with a contemporary edge. They released their debut album in May 2011 with a party in a packed Paradiso in Amsterdam. Filling the former church and now legendary concert hall within the first year of their existence is definitely a major achievement. It just may be that next to Coffee Shops, tulips, Heineken, Rembrandt and great football teams, Staton will be next big thing coming out of Holland.
