Suspect Raptor started with Adriana Star, Leo Charles, Airis Broughton, and L. Hicks, the original vocalist. They spent a year or two writing and developing their sound--an interesting mix of grunge and indie rock. Ashton May took over as the vocalist in February 2011. This took the band in a new direction as the band's sound became a bit lighter, punkier, and more upbeat. Iron Meng joined in late 2012, adding the finishing touches the band needed to grow musically. The group is currently finishing their debut album, Ghost in Hand, and trying to steadily gain listeners and fans in Athens/Atlanta/and beyond with their unique brand of 90s nostalgia.

Suspect Raptor is a four-piece indie grunge band led by frontwoman Ashton May. Their style is reminiscent of '90s throwback garage rock, and they even boast some of the sex appeal of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The guitars are melancholic and subdued and often spazz out in a fuzzy blast of noise. But it is May's vocals that set this band apart from all other Athens bands. Her voice is precise and controlled, switching between a melodic croon and a punky snarl on any given track. Songs such as "Like You Care" showcase this balance of rough and soft with its light vocal ohs and sudden, raw chorus..."

This group specializes in '90s nostalgia, drawing from both indie and alternative rock acts of the decade. But May...has a sultry, smoky sort of voice that, if the band ever had any jazzy inclinations, could probably handle the standards with ease.

These four play grunge-y rock that hints at queercore’s past. Suspect Raptor’s music is mostly slow and controlled, with a good amount of groove, especially for an indie band. That mostly is thanks to bass player Leo Charles, who gives a slight reggae/ska vibe to songs like “Charlene” and “Sandlot” that otherwise have straight forward drums parts and contrasting crunchy/twangy electric guitar. Vocalist Ashton May sings beautifully, and her reverb laden voice is powerful, and seems to haunt over the music. Her best work is over the simple guitar and vocal “Ghost in Hand,” and that slow, understated track may be their best so far. Suspect Raptor is relatively new, but they’ve already seemed to really settle into a great sound, and they are very much deserving of your attention."
