Biography

Sometimes the greatest bonds are born out of the unlikeliest places. The unlikely place in this case is Laval, the quiet suburb of Montreal where casino formed in the summer of 2008. Introduced by future bassist Corey in chance encounter, guitarists Joey Berlangieri and Marc Gebrayel quickly saw the potential in each other and started writing and sharing songs as a duo. When they felt they were ready to expand into a full band, Joey suggested adding younger brother Michael on drums while Marc recruited longtime friend Corey Biondi on bass duties to form what would eventually become casino.

The idea never was to play music just as a hobby and see what would happen with it. Although it is obviously great fun, they agreed very early that the group was to be taken very seriously and that they wouldn’t settle for anything less than everything they dreamed of. It’s with that idea in mind that they built a sound – a very big sound – that doesn’t like to play around in subtleties: it grabs you with a powerful combination of catchy melodies, a solid rhythm section, a true wall of guitars and a high dose of energy. It’s accessibility but not at the expense of credibility. It’s honest and simple, but confident and fearless. Most importantly, it’s made to fill large venues and to be sung in chorus by concert crowds.

Since the beginning of 2012, the band’s touring schedule got busier than ever before, with shows opening notably for the bands Mona, Peter Peter and P.S. I Love You, a second trip to Toronto for Canadian Music Week and IndieWeek. The band was also reinvited at the Musiqueplus hq to perform two songs. Their activity helped them reach the ears of Mat Joly (formerly of mobile), who offered to co-produce casino’s next ep with members of Take The Night (EMI). Scheduled for the fall of 2012, this second release will surely push the group even further ahead.

Day after day, the dream of playing large venues to enthusiastic fans seems less a fantasy and more a very possible reality. Let’s hope the future is kind for casino, but it has no reason not to be.

  Hailing from sweet suburban Montreal is Casino, a dedicated alternative/pop-rock ensemble composed of four talented guys: Joey Berlangieri, Mike Berlangieri, Corey Biondi and Marc Gebrayel. The project began in 2008, and soon evolved into a collection of heartfelt tracks, with a first EP released in June 2011 titled Sainte Rose. The album, which is available for free download on their official page, is just the beginning of the astonishing qualities the band has to offer.
  
  Black Hornets
  In light of their soon to be released Homeland EP, a video for Casino’s single “Black Hornets” has been released. Directed and edited by Randy Santandrea and carefully presented in peaceful gray scale, we follow the protagonists’ vital journey, a search for some form of closure or acceptance, a well-sought escape. He travels alone in familiar spaces: a field, a forest, a dusty road. Throughout, one could only imagine the thoughts roaming through the back of his mind, narrated by the lyrics of this emotive tune. Our wanderer seems to answer his interrogations as he pauses, the circling of the camera connecting him to the band. He finally reaches his desired destination, an opening in the forest revealing a river, a refreshing sense of serenity. The composition of the accompanying track is equally revitalizing. It is calming as it is enticing, and quite energetic while remaining poetic. Casino have definitely done a great job at piecing the elements of pop rock in an alluring way.
  
  
  Homeland: EP and Release Party
  If you have already fallen for this song, you definitely need to pick up their upcoming EP from which the song derives. Not only will Homeland be released on November 19th, but there will also be a concert party to celebrate it. Casino will be holding their show at La Sala Rossa on Saint-Laurent on the same date at 7:30 PM sharp. Joining them will be Midnight Romeo from Quebec (they shared the stage with bands such as The Sounds, Die Mannequin, Simple Plan, Foxy Shazam, and more), presenting the crowd with a sweet dance-rock ambiance. When it was announced on twitter this Montreal-based indie pop rockers, Casino, were participating in CMF, it was the first I ever heard of the band. I took look at some of their performance videos on Youtube and was immediately impressed by their stage presence and musicality. Sometimes when I listen to an artist for the first time I get this extremely confident vision of success for the artist after listening to just a few songs. It’s extremely rare, but my hunch is rarely wrong as there have been about 20 or so bands over the years that I’ve predicted to be successful based on hearing them for the first time (including Fiona Apple, Portishead, Kings of Leon, etc..). And after listening to Casino for the first time a couple of days ago, I got that same feeling that these guys are destined for greatness. Their music sweeps and sways and rocks and rolls, and feels very anthemic, thanks to confident songwriting and impeccable production. Casino even talks in their bio about their desire for greatness and, with songs like the epic “Last Waltz Of A Fallen King”, my money’s on them. Check it out below.

In...Montreal-based indie rockers, Casino, are one of the most talented new bands to come out in 2011. In fact, you may remember me blowing a literary wad all over them a couple of months ago. Well, since then I’m happy to report that their debut EP, Sainte Rose, has worn extremely well and gotten a fuckload of airplay on my Fred Hystereo. <—-I just made that term up
  
  I’d been meaning to post the music video to their single “Graceful” back when it came out a couple of months ago, but was given an even better excuse to post a video of theirs when last week I received an email from the guys pointing me towards a cover they did of New Order’s classic “Bizarre Love Triangle”. I’ve been so tied up lately that it took me a few days to check out, but when I finally did, I learned a valuable lesson in the process: If Casino send new music, stop everything you’re doing and listen!
  
  I’m sure I’ve probably mentioned my love for New Order to you guys at some point, but let me reiterate: I LOVE NEW ORDER! They are one of my top 10 favorite bands of all-time, but interestingly enough my least favorite single of theirs has always been Bizarre Love Triangle. I have to admit that I was very nervous to hear Casino’s cover just because there have been so many horrific attempts by other bands trying to cover New Order in the past. But, as you’ll see in the clip below, Casino are pros in the highest sense of the term and completely make the song their own by stripping away the synths of the original and coming up with a perfect acoustic version that only further proves both the greatness of New Order’s songwriting and their own as well. Brilliant. Love times a trillion US debt dollars.

Since, the song has been massively covered by a plethora of artists including Brandon Flowers from The Killers and most famously by Australian band Frente! who released a beautiful accoustic cover in 1994. Local indie-rock Casino (they actually are from Laval, Qc, just like I am) just made an impressive rendition of the song and it's definitely one of the best I've heard so far. Trust me, it's worth listening !
