Evan: Me and the guitarist Jonathan have know each other our whole lives and have always played music together. Before him and I started writing music together, we would jam, and it always felt amazing, and the cohesion was there. We would come up with riffs and literally push them until they became something powerful.
I was at school in Colorado and we would talk and share ideas and couldn’t help but get stoked about music. I decided to record a few songs while I was at school, just for fun, and have some type of musical statement to look back on. As I was recording, I would talk to Jon back in St. Louis, and we would get each other all excited about what we were doing….so after the recording was done, school was over, and I came back to St. Louis. We got our friend to be our drummer and started this new project called The Neverhawks. We played six or seven shows that summer and just felt great energy behind the music, so we are still pursuing it. We want to blow peoples minds!
Angie: Can you describe your bandmate’s personality for us a bit?
Evan: Jonathan is one of the funniest guys I’ve ever met, and we constantly joke around…For example, we were playing a gig in Chicago earlier this summer, and in between songs, Jon was blatantly making fun of Chicago Cubs baseball to the audience…basically being douche bags on stage. But thankfully the crowd was similar to us, in that we could all care less about sports; we were there to listen to music. Our mindset is to not make our music too intense or dramatic but to just let whats inside of us flow, and hopefully people see that “realness” and enjoy.
Angie: What do you think is the best thing about playing in front of a live audience?
Evan: The best thing that I can think of is the fact that whatever people are in the crowd, no matter where they’re at or how crappy or great their week has been, they are all listening and taking in our music. It’s not only an honor for us as music creators, but we all share something together. We’re all focused on one thing. We’re all there because music moves us.
Angie: What is the coolest thing for you to see an audience member doing while you play?
Evan: I love drunk people! Haha! Even if you know you’re playing terribly, that one drunk schmuck in the crowd is screaming his head off every guitar solo, big riff, or drum breakdown of any song. It’s like them being drunk gives them permission to shout at the top of their lungs and stumble around to even the crappiest music….we have had that happen several times, and It always gives you, as a performer, that encouragement to rock a little harder just for that guy.
Angie: What are you most looking forward to about Rock U Fest?
Evan: The best thing about playing shows is the people you meet. I love talking with the other bands, because we’re all more or less on the same page. We want to share our music. It should be a fun time playing in front of a bunch of people who have no idea who The Neverhawks are. Our music is there to leave a mark on one’s soul.
