Artist Information

Biography

Sander Hicks is a spoken word artist and songwriter. He writes indie punk/folk tunes and is author of the new book "Slingshot to the Juggernaut."

Hicks' newest recordings are called "Mountain Zen for Revolutionary Times." The songs touch on Occupy Wall Street, the increased police presence in NYC, the questions many have about 9/11, and new discoveries in Zen Buddhism. Jazz legend Sam Morrison sits in with Hicks on several tracks, on alto flute and sax (Morrison is best known as a regular with Miles Davis' band.)

"Mountain Zen for Revolutionary Times" comes out simultaneously with the publication of Hicks' new book, "Slingshot to the Juggernaut: Total Resistance to the Death Machine Means Complete Love of the Truth."

BACK STORY:

He first popped out of the vibrant DC punk scene in his early teens, inspired by shows like Fugazi's Gulf War protest concerts behind the Bush White House. In NYC in 1992, Sander Hicks started the insurgent publishing company Soft Skull Press and later fronted the band White Collar Crime. White Collar Crime mixed "art-punk", musical theatre, a great live show, with intent political commitment. When Soft Skull Press and Hicks published the controversial Bush bio "Fortunate Son" White Collar Crime were part of the vertiginous media roller coaster: the band was featured in (and helped soundtrack) the documentary Horns & Halos (HBO-Cinemax). White Collar Crime played four dates on the "D.I.Y. Fest" stage at Warped Tour in year 2000. After a hiatus, White Collar Crime re-united for the Punk Island festival, in the Summer of 2011.
