Biography
Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Samantha Schultz is 21 years old and graduated in June 2009 from the Victoria School of Performing and Visual Arts. She began singing at the age of 3 and has been playing the guitar since she was 11. Samantha writes her own lyrics and music and has a subject range far exceeding her years. Influenced by the likes of Jonny Lang, India Arie and Justin Nozuka, Schultz has created her own unique sound, which appeals to ages of all types.
She has had many opportunities to showcase her talents by entering local competitions and playing at open stages and folk clubs. Samantha has performed at numerous music festivals across Canada, most notably the Edmonton Folk Music Festival and the Salmon Arm Roots & Blues Music Festival; she was featured in the Sirius Satellite "Six Pack," including artists such as Serena Ryder, Sam Roberts, Bedouin Soundclash, Sierra Noble and Elliott Brood.
She adds to her credits opening for such artists as Ryan Cabrera, Livingston Taylor, Kyle Riabko (starring in HAIR! The Musical), Ruthie Foster, Gaye Delorme, and Jennifer Warnes. In February 2009, Samantha opened for Schuyler Fisk and Ben Taylor at the famed El Mocambo club in Toronto, Canada.
In November of 2006, Samantha was the youngest nominee in the category of “Young Performer of the Year” at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. In 2007 and 2009, Samantha was a nominee in the Edmonton Mayor’s Evening for the Arts in the category of the Stantec Youth Artist Award.
Samantha has completed her junior year at Berklee College of Music in Boston, on the generous Gary Slaight Family Scholarship, and will be continuing into her final year in the fall of 2012. Samantha has performed at Cafe 939's The Red Room, as well as at the Berklee Performance Centre in various Berklee College of Music productions. Samantha was also one of four students chosen to be a part of Berklee's premiere award-winning and critically acclaimed a cappella group, Pitch Slapped, in 2009.
In January of 2012, Samantha embarked on her first trip to Europe. She was a featured artist in the Close Encounters: Helsinki and St. Petersburg Music Festival, where she took part in the international songwriting/collaboration band. Schultz performed at multiple venues in Helsinki, Finland, and in St. Petersburg, Russia.
In July 2011, Samantha released her sophomore album, Ink To Paper, a follow-up CD to her 2006 debut release, Both Sides. The sky is the limit for this up-and-coming artist.

EDMONTON - Samantha Schultz was just 13 years old when she wowed the sometimes fussy crowd at the Fu...EDMONTON - Samantha Schultz was just 13 years old when she wowed the sometimes fussy crowd at the Full Moon Folk Club with her acoustic guitar, heart-felt lyrics and a voice that brought people to their feet calling for an encore.
Now, four years later, the willowy teen has quietly released an independent CD of original songs. On Friday, the Edmonton singer and songwriter is to share the stage with other featured artists as part of JunoFest in Calgary.
Schultz, who is still in high school, has garnered little national attention so far, but a couple of veteran Canadian musicians say she has everything it takes to become a huge success.
"I will predict that no matter what, that girl is a star," said Gaye Delorme, an acclaimed guitarist and songwriter who was once nominated for a Grammy. "She’s an artist of the future and I don’t say that about anybody, really. I hear a lot of people, but she really has it."
Schultz opened for Delorme three years ago in Edmonton, but they have no business connection. However, he clearly remembers her quiet confidence on stage.
"I would have loved to have produced her album," he said in an interview from his home in Vancouver. "I’ve produced k.d. Lang and Jann Arden’s first stuff."
When asked if Schultz’s voice reminds him of anyone, Delorme quickly responds.
"Absolutely not. I wouldn’t compare her to anybody that I’ve heard," he said. "Her voice is excellent. Her writing is excellent."
Schultz’s debut release, Both Sides, was co-produced by Mark Sterling and Mike Lent. Lent, a renowned bass player, has recorded with lang and Arden and toured with the latter as her musical director.
Lent describes Schultz as very gifted. He was also impressed by her maturity in the studio and her voice. "When she sang some of her lines, it was like ’What is coming out of there! This is unbelievable,"’ Lent said of their first session in the studio.
Schultz’s undeniable talent quickly attracted other music veterans to her first recording session, including drummer Gary Craig, who has played with Anne Murray and recorded with Bruce Cockburn.
"In fact, he came back from Los Angeles to do this record because he had heard Samantha and was totally knocked out," Lent said.
Lent has advised Schultz’s parents to be patient and use her debut album as a calling card that he believes will launch her into an amazing music career.
Schultz remembers her first major gig in front of 600 people in Edmonton when she opened for folk legend Ruthie Foster in 2004.
"I walked out on stage, plugged in my guitar and pretty much just froze," she said with a laugh. "But later when I calmed down, I realized that it was so cool to show people that a kid like me can put my music out there and be heard."
Schultz said she now goes into "her own little world" while onstage. There are no longer butterflies in her stomach, but the brown-eyed teen admits that her hands sometimes get ice-cold in front of a large audience.
"But I always end up feeling really comfortable, like I’m singing to people in my living room."
Schultz’s father, John, said he sometimes weeps when his daughter emerges from her room with a new song for them to hear.
"As parents, we know what she was feeling. But to hear it expressed in songs, it’s an emotional experience," he said. "It’s no wonder this stuff tends to resonate with people, because it’s entirely honest."
Samantha Schultz has decided to remain as an independent artist. Not the express lane to stardom, but one that Delorme believes will build character in a relative newcomer to the music scene.

Samantha Schultz, 17, of Edmonton, Alberta, has been awarded the prestigious Slaight Family Scholars...Samantha Schultz, 17, of Edmonton, Alberta, has been awarded the prestigious Slaight Family Scholarship, established by Gary Slaight, for study at Boston's Berklee College of Music. Slaight, president and CEO of Slaight Communications and an Edmonton native, created the scholarship for Canadian students who demonstrate outstanding musical merit and potential. With tuition, housing, fees, and the required laptop covered, Schultz will enter Berklee, the world's largest college of contemporary music, this September.
Schultz auditioned for Berklee in February at Grant MacEwan Community College, in Edmonton, one of two Canadian sites where more than 100 students performed for Berklee reps. Mark Campbell, Berklee associate vice president for enrollment, recalled, "Samantha gave an extraordinary audition and made a very strong impression on our interview team. She is a rare talent—thoughtful, modest, and musically gifted. We're very excited to have her join our community."
"Being in the music industry for my entire professional career, I know the value of education in breaking down doors to areas like performance, teaching, and business and management," says Slaight. "Samantha is incredibly talented and has a solid foundation now, but I know the impact Berklee has on its students, and can't imagine how she will flourish and grow. I've seen it with my daughter, Ali, who is in her third year there. It has been a joy for our family to support promising Canadian talent, and we are delighted to support Samantha in her journey from Edmonton to the world's musical stage."
Schultz is making a name for herself on the Edmonton music scene and beyond. She is a singer, songwriter, and guitar player who started making music at 11. Audiences have noted her ability to move them with high-spirited vocals or emotional ballads. Her original songs, heard on the debut CD Both Sides, are rooted in folk, blues, and soul music.
With a live presence that has been steadily unfolding over the last few years, Schultz will make appearances this summer in British Columbia at the Roots and Blues Festival in Salmon Arm, and the Music and Arts Festival in Kelowna. She's already a veteran performer of the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, and the Vancouver Island Musicfest, as well as in clubs throughout Edmonton and Calgary. She has opened for Ruthie Foster, Kyle Riabke, Lynn Miles, and Cindy Church, among others. Schultz was the youngest nominee in the Young Performer of the Year category at the Canadian Folk Music Awards.
"I am so exited to be going to Berklee," says Schultz. "My plan after high school was to take time off to pursue my music career, but the Berklee audition changed that. It opened me up to the possibilities that this school can provide. Music is my passion. I can honestly say I haven't considered another career since the age of 12. By the generosity of the Slaight Family Scholarship, I'm sure Berklee will change me in ways I don't even yet know, and if I work hard, maybe I can offer something in return."

Berklee College of Music has long enjoyed a reputation for drawing students from all over the world, representing more than 70 countries. Recently, the number of Canadian students has risen dramatically, and now it joins Japan and Korea as the most represented foreign countries at Berklee.
Slaight Family Scholarship winners, Lucian Gray (guitar) and Samantha Schultz (voice and guitar), showcase their music for the first time at Cafe 939. Gray recently received the Rising Star award at the Prince Edward County Jazz Festival. He started to play piano at age 3. By age 10, he was playing pieces by Beethoven and Rachmaninoff. Recently, he sat in with Molly Johnson (Canada's jazz icon), and got numerous awards at regional and national music Festivals. This year, he was also selected as one of Young Stars to compose and perform with the Esprit Orchestra (May 2008) on electric guitar. He also spends time volunteering to teach music to underprivileged children, and donates his time to charitable organizations such as People for Education, Doctors Without Borders, Youth Link, Bereaved Families of Ontario, and War Child.

Certainly from a personal perspective when I first heard her songs on her myspace.com I must admit for such a
young singer, I was really impressed she already had such a powerful voice which I could certainly style wise in her
material among others – Eva Cassidy, K.T. Tunstall, Joni Mitchell. Sheryl Crow and bits of Tegan and Sara.
What was more impressive was simply the fact unlike all of these acts with Samantha still being such a young age,
she already has the voice to match nearly all of these acts already and I for one look forward to hearing next what she does.

How are things and what’s happening at the moment?
Samantha:
My cd has finally been released!! it's about 2 months new and i'm really, REALLY excited. my music is going to
kind of be going slow in the future, seeing as i still am doing school full time. my parents and i are talking about possibly
touring next summer...so we'll see! the cd sales have been going really well, and i actually had my cd launch on September 18th.
it was a sold out venue and the crowd was great. i had a band with me, so it was different from what people are usually
used to seeing me perform but i also played some songs with just me and my guitar. it was a really fun evening and i'll
have some great memories of that night!

Next, can you tell us a little bit about the history of your music or as I like to say sometimes – who fired the
starting pistol?
Samantha:
Well, i've grown up in a musical family. ever since i was really little, my parents have ALWAYS played many different types
of genres of music, anything you could possibly think of. apparently, at the age of three, my parents taped me singing
"i will always love you" by céline dion on perfect key. i saw the tape and it was pretty funny...my dad also told me that
he took me to some orff classes, where i basically got to bang on tambourines and xylophones. my mom played the piano
and sang. my maternal grandpa sang and played guitar and my maternal grandma sang in small shows in college.
my paternal grandmother used to sing when she was little and used to play the piano a little.
In elementary, singing in the school choir was one of my biggest priorities. i loved being there and learning new music
and new words. unlike some of the other kids who were there just to stay in from recess, usually during the winter season,
i was there to learn eveything i possibly could. i was given a lot of the solos in the pieces that required them, and they were
an awful lot of fun to sing. eventually, as i got older, my music teacher/choir teacher noticed that i did have a voice, and
suggested to my parents and i that i take private singing lessons. we took her advice, and attended lessons for about
two years when i was nine years old.

“Hei” from the winter wonderland of Helsinki, Finland! I’m here with three Berklee students who are ...“Hei” from the winter wonderland of Helsinki, Finland! I’m here with three Berklee students who are making the most of their experience as part of the Close Encounters Festival this week. The Samantha Schultz Trio, led by Samantha Schultz (vocals, guitar) with Alexander Toth (bass) and Charles “Trey” Macias (hand percussion) represent Canada and the US for this week-long event promoting international musical exchange. They are joined by bands from our Berklee International Network partner schools the Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory (who are hosting and producing the event), Helsinki Metropolia University, and France’s Music Academy International, along with student bands from the Helsinki Conservatory, Sibelius Academy, and the Mussorgsky College of Music in St. Petersburg.
Monday night was the trio’s first gig, during which they performed a five-song set of Samantha’s originals to an enthusiastic audience of over 100 people at the Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory’s Arabia Hall.
Up next for our Berklee crew? A gig tonight at the Caisa cultural center (where the program also includes fellow Berklee student and Pop & Jazz alum Anni Mattila), and then we head to St. Petersburg tomorrow for a gig at the JFC jazz club. Samantha Schultz played Original Joe’s Varsity Saturday night, part of a duo of young folk-pop stars...Samantha Schultz played Original Joe’s Varsity Saturday night, part of a duo of young folk-pop stars. She plays with passion, but she can also sing so softly that you need to lean forward in your seat. And you will, because you want to hear what that lovey voice is saying.
She’s also great on the guitar, fingers flying throughout her songs. She’s folky, with Norah Jones-like qualities to her voice, and really is one to watch. Though, she’s been one to watch for a few years, bursting onto the Edmonton scene in 2005 as a Tweener at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival. -

Berklee students perform in Helsinki and St. Petersburg as part of the Close Encounters Festival.
The Samantha Schultz Trio, composed of current Berklee students Samantha Schultz (vocals/guitar), Trey Macias (hand percussion), and Alexander Toth (bass) will be performing at venues in Helsinki, Finland and St. Petersburg, Russia as part of the Close Encounters festival the week of January 30. This opportunity is in collaboration with bands from the Berklee International Network partners the Pop & Jazz Conservatory, Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences - Degree Program in Pop and Jazz Music, and Music Academy International, as well as institutions elsewhere in Helsinki and St. Petersburg.
Close Encounters Helsinki & St. Petersburg is a new music festival that offers a multicultural venue for ambitious young musicians and their fresh ideas—breaking boundaries between musical genres and nations. The festival takes place simultaneously at prominent venues in Helsinki and St. Petersburg with participants from Finland, Russia, the United States, France, Canada, and Germany. Close Encounters is a statement against strict borders both in music and in life, gathering people and music together in an open, creative environment.
In addition to their own shows the musicians will create new music together in international groups during the festival, with performances on Thursday and Friday. The festival program is as diverse as its participants and includes gypsy jazz, experimental electronica, melancholic rock, folk-pop, singer-songwriter material, soul, and R&B.
