Biography

Marine, Singer, Rapper, Song Writer and Producer, “The Real Laww was born to entertain…”. His live performances take you on a journey and will have you captivated from the words “Hi..”. The Real Laww was born in Trenton NJ Raised in Lexington KY, then moved to Durham NC and has lived there ever since. Joined the marines in 2007 and excelled in the ranks. But music has ALWAYS been there…


Winner of the 2012 Carolina Music Award for Video of the Year, and nominated in the Male Hip Hop Artist. Currently Number 1 on Reverbnation for Durham NC, for Rap Artists. In 2003 started working with Thunda Pound aka Centerpoint out of Raleigh NC, where The Real Laww started to record his first pieces of original music. He worked on various projects with the 11 man team such as Centerpoints: Point Made 2007 and The Bums: Likes This 2009. “I always worked on songs but never really had an album, there are about 40 to 45 songs out there, that no one has ever heard and was never pressed up.” In 2009, before being deployed to Iraq, The Real Laww released his first Solo project: A Mix Tape Vol 1. it got pretty good local reviews, nothing real big though,” i didn’t have anyone promoting it but myself.” Then in 2010, after returning from a success deployment in Iraq, The Real Laww released his second Solo project: A Mix Tape Vol 2. where songs like “Sweatin” and “Future” were played in clubs in NC and ATL and received some radio time in Milwaukee and various internet radio stations. Recently A Mix Tape Vol 2 received 3.5 out of 4 starts in IAE Magazine. Now just returning from a successful tour in Afghanistan, The Real Laww recently just finished his 3rd solo project: “A Mix Tape Vol 3?. Is currently working on his first Album “The Laww Cometh” projected to be released 2012.


“I’m just your friendly neighborhood super artist…”. He writes, produces/make beats, sings, develops artists, vocal coach, engineers, performs, and all around entertains. “I just love trying new stuff..” The Real Laww finds him self always pushing his artistic limits with the developments of his New song concepts and sounds. He says with confidence that moves will be made, and more than just his facebook friends will know his name.
Who influences you?: Well I put it like this: (cough) Im the bastard son of Eminem and Lauryn Hill, but was raised by Talib Kweli and his brother Mos Def. All my uncles came to visit me, A tribe called quest, De La soul, rapped me to bed. Jill Scott and Musiq sang me to sleep. My big brothers Kanya West and Pharrell kept me motivated and the God Father Dr Dre keeps me inspired…

  Okay, so we know its a few days past halloween, but some of us are still celebrating. Okay not reall...Okay, so we know its a few days past halloween, but some of us are still celebrating. Okay not really, but this Zombie video from rapper The Real Laww ft. Toon is so good, its scary. Oh and we promise the song is pretty killer too. He’s been in the rapping game for a while, and pursuing music since the 9th grade, he says. It wasn’t always that his music career was on the forefront of his daily life. He produced anywhere from 40-45 original songs but he never made them into an album. The Real Laww was then deployed to Iraq where he had to put his music career on hold.
  
  After returning from a successful deployment in Iraq, The Real Laww released the second solo project: A Mix Tape Vol. 2 where songs like “Sweatin” and “Future” were played in clubs in nearby cities like Atlanta. His songs even got radio time and various internet radio stations. Recently, A Mix Tape Vol. 2 received 3.5 out of 4 stars in I AM ENTERTAINMENT (IAE) MAGAZINE. Now just returning from a successful tour in Afghanistan, The Real Laww is currently working on 2 solo projects: “A Mix Tape Vol. 3? and “The Law Cometh” projected to be released early 2012.

  There's now a furious new wave of Durham-born zombies walking amongst us and rapping as they go. The source of this revolutionary strain, if a new music video is to be believed, is a hot new track from local rapper and producers The Real Laww and Toon, dubbed "Professional Hater (Remix)."
  
  The Real Laww (or J. Lawrence) is a Durham-based veteran of the war in Afghanistan; Toon is a graduate of the Durham School of the Arts. They were documented in the pursuit of BRAINS! by director Saleem Reshamwala (aka Kid Ethnic).

From working at McDonalds to excelling in the Marines, L@w has always managed to keep one thing constant in his life: Hip-Hop. Dating back to when he was just a teenager in the 9th grade battling other Emcees and performing at small shows L@w got an early start in the game. In 2003 he began working with Thunda Pound (Centerpoint) out of Raleigh, NC and from there he truly began to master his craft. Before being shipped out to Iraq in 2009 L@w released his first solo project: A Mix Tape Volume 1. The mixtape was a success locally but didn’t quite make a buzz on a larger scale. It wasn’t until his return from Iraq in 2010 that he began to make National noise with “A Mix Tape Volume 2.” With big things on the horizon there’s no stopping L@w from making a name for himself because let’s face it, everybody has to obey the L@w right?

He has shared stages with artists from world music, punk, jazz and other styles. “It feels like the music I’m doing can interweave with all those genres,” he said. “It’s accepted by people, which is really awesome. Up and coming Durham rappers Toon and The Real Laww have put together what they describe as a rap/skate extravaganza, happening at Wheels Fun Park, with the proceeds benefiting victims of domestic violence through the Durham Rescue Mission.
  
  This one-two combo of beats, rhymes and good times have produced music together for years and interestingly enough, it all began with the raiding of a refrigerator. Bound by a heretofore unknown a mutual friend, Laww discovered Toon in his kitchen perusing the perishables in his icebox! What could have immediately become beef changed direction when Toon noticed Laww’s microphones and recording equipment- conversation ensued and musical friendship spawned.
  
  Though both artists had been working on music individually, there was an evident mutual benefit from the collaboration. Laww, a Marine reservist and a veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan...

• Skating event will raise money for Durham Rescue Mission [+ Show ]
  

  DURHAM – The Durham Rescue Mission and domestic violence victims will benefit from a special roller ...DURHAM – The Durham Rescue Mission and domestic violence victims will benefit from a special roller skating event set for the end of the month.
  
  The Skate Away The Hate fundraiser will be held starting at 10 p.m. March 30 at Wheels Skate Park, 715 N. Hoover Road.
  
  The goal is to raise $4,000 to help domestic violence victims at the Durham Rescue Mission, according to Durham resident Jay Lawrence, who is organizing the event.
  
  “I want to give something back,” Lawrence, an entertainer and U.S. Marine who served back-to-back tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, said.
  
  Lawrence said one reason for organizing the event is that his business partner and his partner’s mother were victims of domestic violence.
