My name is Brandon Edwards. I am the lead worshiper at Journey Church, a new church plant in Bozeman, Montana. My wife, Stephanie, and I were married 14 months ago, two weeks later we moved from Anchorage, Alaska, to Bozeman, Montana to be on the launch team here at Journey and we’ve had our nose to the grind stone ever since. Somewhere in there I flew back to Anchorage to record vocal and guitar tracks for “Out of the Desert”.
I started playing instruments in the 3rd grade but I didn’t start playing guitar until I turned 18. I always enjoyed singing along with my favorite artists, especially Harry Nilsson and James Taylor. Then in college I felt a “holy discontent” to be a worship leader and joined the worship team at the University of Oregon and I’ve continued to lead worship at least once a week for the last 9 years. I also joined the Gospel Choir at the UofO and began loving the music of Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond and Tonex, my favorite three Christian artists.
I was leading worship at church in Anchorage with my friend Melissa in 2003.Two years ago we started collaborating on some of her songs and Melissa got the bug to make an album and I jumped at the chance. It was a lot of fun.
I wrote two of the songs myself. The other 10 were written primarily by Melissa. I helped her finish a couple of them, adding a hook here and a bridge there. Collaboration is a lot of fun and is one of my favorite parts of the recording process.
Melissa had finished many of her songs before we’d even started talking about making an album. Then it was a matter of figuring out what kind of vocal styling matched what she wanted and what she was trying to accomplish in her songs. I wanted to stay true to what she was trying to accomplish. For my two songs I had a dead line. I knew I was going to be in the studio on a certain date so I worked on them with that goal in mind. The drums, piano, bass, my guitar parts and the gospel choir recordings were laid down in August of 05 in Anchorage, Alaska. Then we started the process of finding the right musicians and vocalists to finish the songs.
A lot of what I do is connected to my job as a worship pastor and doing life with our church community and keeping my finger on the spiritual pulse of Journey Church. The songs that I write and record are connected with what is bubbling up in our community at Journey; the struggles, hardships and joy that people are experiencing and the aspects of God that we are learning all go into the mix. I hope that what I write will glorify God and be a benefit to the capital church by helping people to line up with God’s heart for the world.
I have had the privilege to get to know a lot of great men and women in the industry already who are really going for it and living awesome lives. Charlie Hall & Band are a huge support to me and I love the whole Passion movement. I also met Sara Groves a little while back and was really impressed with how her family is able to travel with her on the road and how plugged in to her home church she is.
I would love to continue being the worship pastor here at Journey Church, collaborating and recording new music with the musicians and lead worshipers here and throughout Montana and the US. I am also looking forward to traveling and leading worship around the US.
