Biography

Charles Ellsworth is among the new breed of artists who define their own genre with his story told through music. Raised in the mountains of Northeastern Arizona, this close proximity to nature and open spaces is felt in his musical style and lyrics. As a fan of the old west, stories of simple justice and love are told in a fashion which brings to mind a campfire and hope for a better tomorrow. Often dark, his music is complex in the simplicity of each message he brings to life in song. Charles Ellsworth is the sage of his generation, channeling the voices and beliefs of a time not so long ago.

  American Hollow = Explosions in the Sky + Pink Floyd + Mastodon
  American Hollow offers an eerie blend of progressive rock and raspy, Eddie Vedder-esque vocals on their self-released EP. The background synths are darkly encompassing and help to fill their sound. These guys are undoubtedly talented guitarists. However, their sporadic changes in guitar chords and overall rhythm—sometimes metal and other times rock—left me confused as to what sound they really want to own. Then again, the heavy metal closing section on “Say, Is It Really True?” is especially charging. “Bonfire of Myth: Prologue” is literally a ghostly sermon backed by the sound of creeping guitar chords—something that might play in your head if you were lost, wandering in the desert, void of any influence and open to the reality of mankind’s errors.   This 40-minute live set is a slow burner—one long track of stripped-down, deep grooves from a psychedelic ensemble. Bombarding you with seemingly endless buildup toward a minimal climax, you have to pass that first crest before they start hitting their stride. Somewhere between a slow, experimental western soundtrack and teenage jam band practice, this live recording’s meandering, bottomed-out bass might drive away those unwilling to spend eight minutes waiting for a song to get going. In fact this live recording was never slated for an official release, just passed out to fans who attended a Burt’s Tiki Lounge show earlier this year. Since then, the band has broken up, solidiying this recording as audible time capsule of what one was. –Henry Glasheen

  Charles Ellsworth and the Dirty Thirty = Chuck Ragan + Ryan Adams + 16 Horsepower
  This Arizona transplant has created a record full of sorrowful tunes that seems to organically flow from within himself. Gentle in his approach, each song is as thoughtful in its songwriting as it is in its production. One that stood out for me was “These Desert Nights,” which builds a picture of the lost feeling that Ellsworth himself has surely had while spending time in his native land. It’s obvious with all the different musicians that play on it, the vision for this record is on a larger scale. It’s still easy to hear that the beginnings of each track were struck out by one man and his acoustic guitar. Gentle and genuine are how I would describe this record, and I enjoy that. –James Orme

The album is the the first of many releases in which The Dirty Thirty creative collective will backing instrumentation to each other's solo projects. This month Charles will be heading out on a pseudo-tour, where he will be traveling the lower 48 states for about a year, finding work through Craigslist and playing house shows. Expect a Kickstarter page and video updates following his adventures.

  House Band Wines and sister winery Krutz Family Cellars will host its “Indie Artist Lounge” in association with Creative Furnace and TasteLive at San Francisco Vintners Market on Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15 at Fort Mason in San Francisco. At San Francisco Vintners Market, wine buyers can connect with hundreds of wineries and taste and buy wines direct from the source. The artist lounge will be House Band Wines official launch into the Bay Area market and feature six artists over the two-day event. The complete artist line-up and schedule are listed below.   Hey gang! Its been a couple weeks since anyone has released anything, but March is here and we're ba...Hey gang! Its been a couple weeks since anyone has released anything, but March is here and we're back in the thick of things. Starting off with two releases this weekend. We start things off with Small Town Sinners. This northern Utah group have been playing around for a while now, gaining popularity mainly through word of mouth over their music that comes off as alternative folk. This week they're releasing their debut album, The Dirty Thirty, which has immediately shot up on my must-have list this week. Catch them tonight at the Woodshed for their release party, and playing with them tonight will be Charles Ellsworth and our old friends Michael Gross & The Statuettes. 8PM for just $5.
  
  Then tomorrow night the heavier alternative rock takes center stage as Under Radar releases their new self-titled album. Coming up on their fifth year the band has been a highlight of the rock venues for some time. Not a lot of info out about the album, but if the tracks on MySpace are any indication of the whole, it looks to be a promising album. Catch their release show tomorrow night at Club Vegas, along side Werewolf Afro, Kiss Me Kill Me, Pink Tractor and KHP! $7 at 8PM
