Siuan McGahan took a meandering path to her current role as a songwriter. Born in Dublin, Ireland, Siuan moved to Los Angeles as a teenager. She studied math and philosophy in college, though she really wanted to paint. After college she went to work in engineering at NASA/JPL. After 5 years of being practical she decided to quit and paint full-time. At that time, she also bought a guitar, learned 3 chords and started a punk band with some friends. Not satisfied with being a cover band, Siuan also started writing songs. Songwriting was one of those "where have you been all my life" discoveries.
Sometimes humorous, sometimes emotionally profound, Siuan lyrically tackles subjects from a stance that is slightly off-center offering a fresh vantage point to familiar ills. With a sharp wit and a scholarly appreciation for words, she is a wordsmith worth your keen attention.
Sonic influences range from Neil Diamond to Blonde Redhead and you can hear this breadth in the combination of downtempo derivative and noise rock elements. Her signature folky timbre evokes memories of an early Nathalie Merchant and her sound might draw comparisons to Feist, Metric or Keren Ann.
