Biography

Pike is a Cincinnati based band that has been pushing their punk-influenced brand of alt rock since 2005. People have commented that they sound like the Pixies at times, a heavier version of the B-52's, and Sleater-Kinney. Within their music, you can hear the influences of Sonic Youth, Primus, and the Reverend Horton Heat.

Their first project in 2005, “The Sound of Power Tools” EP, was packed tight with infectious anthems full of sharp-witted pop culture references, joyful handclaps, random daily observations and crackling electric harmonies. Pike returned in 2007 with the EP “…from someone so small” with more of the same dynamic, punk-influenced, electric energy. Their next release is scheduled for 2011, and it will be the first full length album for the group.

Pike has played showcases at National music conferences and festivals, including The Invasion of the Go Girls at South by Southwest (Austin, TX), Hyperactive Music Fest (Albuquerque, NM), and Dfest (Tulsa, OK), and the Rock Meets Runway event held at the Hard Rock Cafe, Times Square (New York, NY). They also wrote “Jawbreaker (Love Theme for the Cincinnati Rollergirls).”

  There's typically two ways a local rock festival approaches its seventh year: wheezing on its last legs as fans lose interest, or energized and ready to steam toward the decade mark.
  
  Going into year No. 7, Chicks Rockfest founder Jenny "Jem" George is on the 10-year plan, with a festival that has expanded to 50 bands playing over four nights (it opened Thursday) on two stages.
  
  "We've definitely grown more diverse and made a lot of headway in different kinds of acts," says George, whose only rule is that each band must have at least one prominent female member.
  
  "We're not the longest running festival of this kind, but we're different because we're the only one with male fronted bands as well as female fronted bands because I try to keep it more diverse."
  
  Here are seven acts you shouldn't miss.

  Rivertown Music Club puts on '50s, punk-rock dance parties
  
  Remember back in high school when you were way too cool to go to something as lame as prom? When you couldn't be bothered with buying a poufy dress, renting a dorky tux, fumbling with a corsage or listening to a DJ spin Kool & the Gang's "Celebration" for the 800th time?
  
  Now's your chance to put all that awkwardness behind you and go to a prom that really rocks, where only the cool kids show up. The Rivertown Music Club is holding a pair of themed "proms" at the Poison Room Saturday night as a fundraiser for its Recording Grant Fund.
  
  The upstairs will be dedicated to an "Enchantment Under the Sea" dance that will mine a 1956 vibe, with sets from Jared Schaedle & John Henly, the WasteWheelers, Kelly Thomas & the Fabulous Pickups and Straw Boss.
