Biography
Recently created in New York, Maria Cangiano's band gathers an incredible new generation of musicians with a diversity of musical backgrounds (Classical/Jazz/Tango). It represents a new "global tango," at the same time, traditional and avant-garde. The band arranges Tangos mixing their diverse musical background and life experience.
Initially trained in opera as a dramatic mezzo-soprano, MARIA CANGIANO has performed in New York Opera companies including Regina Opera Theater, Dicapo Opera Theater and the well-known Amato Opera. Two years ago, she created and produced her first one-woman tango show, “Tango in Red and Black.” At the same time, she put together one of the first tango bands with a vocalist in New York, El Cuarteto de Maria, Tango Quartet, with David Hodges, bandoneon, Emilio Teubal, piano and Sergio Reyes, violin. Maria Cangiano has dedicated herself to bringing Tango song repertoire to a wide diverse social and ethnical audience. She has performed with El Cuarteto and other well-known Tango musicians- Tito Castro, Pancho Navarro among others- in several New York venues, such as Joe's Pub, Bowery Poetry Club, Brooklyn‘s Vertical Players Repertory, the Spanish Harlem Cultural Café Carlitos, La Tea Theater, the Nuyorican Poets Café, the National Arts Club, Cami Hall, and the Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai International.
Pianist OCTAVIO BRUNETTI, born in Rosario, Argentina, studied at the prestigious Berklee Music School in Boston. In the United States, he has performed in very important tango groups, such as Bernardo Monk’s Mass Tango and Pablo Aslan’s Avantango among others. He has also participated in several Tango Festivals, Santa Bárbara Tango Malambo Festival, el Providence Festival of World Music, and el Boston Tango Festival. In 2004 he got the first award as piano performer at the first New York Tango Competition.
American bandoneonist DAVID HODGES has studied with Héctor del Curto and Tito Castro. Before relocating to New York, he created and performed with several tango ensembles in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest. He performs with numerous groups in New York, including Los Chantas Tango trio, Los Changos Septet, and Héctor del Curto’s Eternal Tango Orchestra.
PEDRO GIRAUDO (www.mrvivo.com), Bass & Composition, originally from Cordoba, Argentina, moved to New York City in 1996. Since then he has become an in-demand bass player playing in a great variety of musical projects in the city. He has performed professionally with Bobby Sanabria, Pablo Ziegler, Vincent Herring, William Cepeda, Manny Duran, Guillermo Klein and Scott Reeves, and recorded with Jose Halac, Francesca Ancarola, Antiheroe Group, Fernando Otero's X-Tango, Brian Vargas, The Art Department, Jose Conde, Nick Mancini Collective, Mo'Guajiro, and Jess Jurkovic. Pedro Giraudo has participated in various Jazz and Music Festivals throughout the United States. He holds a Bachelor in Performance diploma from Manhattan School of Music where he was a scholarship recipient and a Masters in performance from City University of New York where he studied with Prof. Ron Carter.
VICTOR PRIETO (www.victorprieto.net), Spanish accordionist and composer, who is revolutionazing the way the accordion is played. His music embraces different tendencies that come form jazz, tango, classical and celtic roots. He is the creator of a new technique for the accordion called "chord approach on both hands." He studied at Berklee College of Music wtih Joanne Brackeen. He has performed with major Jazz and Tango musicians sucha as Paquito D' Rivera, Lionel Louke, Diego Urcola, Mark Walter, David Sammuels, Raul Jaurena among others. He has performed at many prestigious venues, Lincoln Center, New Jersey Performance Art Center, Williamsburg Jazz Festival etc.

Our sets are around 8 songs each covering old and new tangos. Usually, the first set is old tangos, and the second one is a selection of Astor Piazzolla and post-Piazzolla tangos.
