"Lloyd Miller Interview by Cyrus Rhodes"

IMD What do you want fans to take from your music?

LM My hope is that people will be able to feel my music with their soul and with my lyrics that they get a sense they are not alone in the struggles of life. When I heard Stevie Ray Vaughn for the first time I felt like my Soul was set on fire and I’m not expecting to live up to the legendary status of SRV, but I hope others can experience that with my music.

IMD Who are some of your top musical influences?

LM Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin were the first bands I really got into. Then I heard Stevie Ray Vaughn and my life was changed. Hendrix was a huge inspiration after Stevie. Those two are where most of my guitar playing influence comes from although blues legends like Buddy Guy and Albert and B.B. King played a big part as well. My song writing influences come from whatever I’m listening to at the time. Anything from Classic Rock, like the first three bands I mentioned, to 90s Rock (STP, Alice in Chains, Etc.) and even some of what I hear on current radio.

IMD What was the best concert you have ever been to?

LM I will say Buddy Guy at the El Ray theater in Los Angeles. I had a friend who was a manager at the Virgin Mega Store and Buddy was doing a CD signing for his Sweet Tea release. I got to meet him before the crowds got there and then see his show later. Truly a memorable experience.

IMD Tell us a bit about your latest EP - “Not Too Late”

LM This EP consists of songs that I have written over the past 5 years regarding my struggles with addiction and finding some freedom from it as well. I made a short film about the story behind the songs that goes into a little more detail. It can be found on my website, www.lloydmillermusic.com.

IMD What’s the best and worst things about being based in Austin, TX?

LM The best things, after living in Los Angeles for almost 10 years, are that it is a lot easier to make connections here since it’s still kind of a small city, its more affordable to live here and there are plenty of opportunities to do what I love doing which is play music. I guess the worst thing would be that there is so much competition but I believe if you have the talent and quality music you can push through here. If your persistent.

IMD Is there a song on this latest CD that stands out as being your personal favorite?

LM Not particularly. All of the songs that I write are written from my heart based on my life experience so I have a personal attachment to all of them.

IMD What’s the best thing about performing live?

LM For me, the best thing about performing live is connecting with the audience on a level that can only be felt.

IMD What’s next for Lloyd Miller Band?

LM My goal is to continue playing gigs here in Austin for the rest of 2012 and hopefully start branching out some touring in 2013 in addition to recording a full length album. - Indie Music Digest

EP REVIEW:

Austin Texas based Singer/Songwriter Lloyd Miller, of the Lloyd Miller Band just released his debut EP in 2012. Miller is no stranger to the business having years of experience and attending Musicians Institute's GIT program. I might add their debut EP which was produced by CJ Eiriksson (U2, Matchbox 20, Incubus). Band members include Lloyd Miller (Vocals, Guitar), Jason Clark (Vocals Bass), and Ace Alonzo (Drums). .

The EP takes flight with “Not too Late” a methodical rocked-out guitar groove that serves up driving rock rhythm against slamming fretwork and well placed, heartfelt vocals from Miller. Track 2 “Whisper in the Dark” keeps thing moving in the right direction with its steady flowing rhythm, hooky chorus, and amazing finale. Track 3 "Your Love" shifts gears a bit with its dynamic guitar intro, eventually lending itself into an impressive ballad that flows and ebbs its way through to emotional fruition. The EP makes a great first impression dashing out 3 solid tracks in a row. I would classify this music as Alternative Rock with a slight modern country rock flair. Along the way you will notice impressive instrumentation with things like impressive solo guitar, well placed harmonies all built upon a solid rhythm section to boot. The musicianship of everyone involved is clearly above the bar. Now turning our attention over to Miller as for his vocal abilities, his voice works extremely well within the confines of this catalogue. I might add Miller knows how to play the guitar (rhythm and solo), but he also knows how to sit deep within the pocket and sing a song with amazing fluidity. His voice goes down smooth and fills the space peacefully and unobtrusively with an infectious jagged edge. All the Engineering aspects are in check (Recording, Mixing, Mastering) as the CD possesses solid low end punch and crystal clear high end clarity. The music reminds me of a combination between Keith Urban and Nikelback. All songs are well crafted and consistent across the board. The EP ends with “Life Renewed” the perfect finale statement for an EP like this.

All songs over 3.5 minutes tend to drag you to the finish line. Miller also needs how learn how to slowly build a vocal performance. At time especially in the beginning, he comes across a bit to strong. Artists like Miller are guilty of over singing their songs slightly, very much like an actor overacts. Miller also needs to take more vocal risks throughout his performances, and put the brakes on his excessive vibrato.. I typically don’t give 10 star ratings out to EP releases. The full length CD is a more complete snapshot to judge an artist by.

From start to finish “Not Too Late” EP is an impressive musical teaser from Lloyd Miller. The music is grooving, upbeat and entertaining. The songwriting – all consistent musical experiences, each one possessing a unique personality, flair and signature groove. The writing, playing and singing abilities of Lloyd Miller and his band are rock solid. The guitar work from Miller is impressive and vocal presence and overall persona of Miller is something many females around will welcome with open arms.

"Lloyd Miller Band – Not Too Late (EP)"

Lloyd Miller
Album/EP: Not Too Late
Genera: Pop, Rock, Singer-Songwriter

By Michael Keith edited by Drew Blackwell

Review: Austin Texas based 3 –piece Lloyd Miller Band just released their debut EP entitled “Not Too Late” in November 2012. I have to say I was extremely impressed with these 3 singles “Not Too Late”, Whisper in the Dark”, Your Love.” They made quite the impression and each one possessed my full unadulterated attention, eager for what lied ahead. To be honest: I expected cheesy Sing Songy Pop that was extremely predictable and shallow in nature – very compatible for a mass audience. What I discovered was actually quite the opposite. All 4 songs are wonderfully conservative yet full of what I would call positive pop-rock energy with music that appeals to so many different senses on so many different levels. A sentence from his bio really hits home: Reading from his Sonicbids bio: Lloyd Miller creates addictive and catchy rock songs with a hint of soulful blues and a positive message about life experiences that people can relate to. Band members include Lloyd Miller (vocals, guitar), Jason Clark (bass), Ace Alonzo (drums). Miler’s music reminded me of Jack Johnson, Matt Wertz, Amos Lee and Gavin Degraw just to name a few. But LMB has a hard rocking jagged edge cut from the same cloth as Collective Soul, Lifehouse, or even Daughtry. What I really like about Miler is how marketable he truly is. He’s got the look, the voice, he plays a mean guitar, he delivers music and lyrics straight from the heart. From Alternative Rock, to Southern fried Blues Miller’s music covers allot of ground. Weather it’s musically, lyrically, inspirationally, emotionally, spiritually – if you feel like music is taking us in the wrong direction than rest assured Lloyd Miller is pointing us back in the right direction with this latest “Not Too Late” My hats off to the Producer expertise of CJ Eiriksson (U2, Matchbox 20, Incubus). If I could say anything to Miler right now – Put a few more “bad boy’ songs on your upcoming full length CD. I also recommend you tailor all your music/songs around a female fan base predominantly. This is harder to do than it sounds. I also don’t agree with his REVERBNATION “Sounds Like” section: The Jimi Hendrix Experience Official Page, Pink Floyd, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, Led Zeppelin Official.

Final Word: Lloyd Miller will affirm your faith in good music again. He’s the typical Pop-Rock artist but goes a bit deeper than the next guy with his real deal songwriting skills, solid musicianship, impressive persona and voice –all important trademarks of effective pop-rock artists. These latest string of songs all delivers a highly passionate EP with top flight musicianship, amazing songwriting and music that covers all the bases: Pop, Rock, Singer/Songwriter, Alternative Rock and even Southern fried Blues to Jam Band.
