"Japan Nite 2011 at The Viper Room: Presenting 5 Japanese Bands You Should Hear Right Now"

Of all five bands on the bill for Japan Nite in Los Angeles, Josy may have been the least familiar to fans of Japanese rock. They've been together for five months. Their discography consists of one single and their online presence is limited to a MySpace page with three songs and 23 friends. We think this will change soon.

Josy consists of four young women from Tokyo-- Cumi, Non, Mami and Nanohana-- none of whom play guitar in the band. Instead, the sound revolves on Non and Nanohana's tight rhythm section and Mami's psychedelic keyboards. The Japan Nite website notes that the band members are fans of the Doors and, while that probably does influence the keyboard sounds, Josy has much more of a punk rock feel. Singer Cumi is a star in the making. She performs with tons of energy and seems to be quite aware of cameras in the audience.

Despite being first on a bill for a show that started at 8 p.m., Josy played for a full house and the reaction from the crowd was enthusiastic.

Bio

Cumi and Mami, vocals and keyboard, have been playing together before, and one drowsy night in 2010, they played a gig in the Livehouse in Shinjuku, where Non, the Bass girl, was working. She was to start a band with Nanohana, the drummer. Several whiskies later, the two girl bands became one: Josy. The name reflect our conviction, that despite societies pressure, you should stay in that childlike mindset for as long as your can, even though your body matures.

We don’t care about genres, we play how and what we like, our roots are nowhere and everywhere at the same time. Sometimes we feel like reenacting “the old times” of oldies or blues, sometimes we like it psychedelic aggressive performances, and the we may go back to voluminous Rock sounds. We wanna uplift the audience, let them fly, invigorate them, drag them through a dream world and let them feel, they are one with the universe.

We have played all over Japan, in Osaka, Kobe, Sendai, Fukushima, but our home turf is Tokyo. We have played in the United States, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas (JAPAN Nite US Tour 2011). Currently we are playing our second US Tour and a Tour in Europe.
